Tournament build: Falcon & Poe or Regen Hawk?

By Karhedron, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I have a tournament coming up in just over a week and I am mulling 2 different lists. I am not the fastest player in the world and we only have 1 hour per game so I am planning to stick to either 2 or 3 ships so I have a chance of finishing.

List 1

35 Poe Dameron (31) - T-70 X-Wing
Veteran Instincts (1), R5-P9 (3), IA (0)

36 "Red Ace" (29) - T-70 X-Wing
R2 D2 (4), IA (0), Comms relay (3)

29 Kyle Katarn (21) - HKW-290
TLT (6), Jan Ors (2)

100 Total

Fairly straight forward Rebel Regen list with Kyle in a Hawk for support. Jan Ors will help keep Red Ace's Comms Relay full. Alternatively she can allow Poe to Evade and still receive a Focus token from Kyle. The TLT will help cover the X-wings' blind spots and threaten low agility ships.

My concern is that in fitting these 3 characters into 1 list I have cut them too close to the bone (no title or EPT on the Hawk, no autothrusters on the X-wings). Will this work or should I ditch the TLT for a cheaper turret and tool up the T70s a bit more?

I don't expect Kyle to survive the game given the level of support he grants the other 2 ships but if he lasts more than a couple of turns he will probably have been worth it and attracted enough firepower to ensure the X-wings get to stay alive with their regenerating magic.

List 2

38 Poe Dameron (31) - T-70 X-Wing
Lone Wolf (2), R5-P9 (3), Autothrusters (2)

62 Han Solo (46) - YT-1300

Veteran Instincts (1), C-3PO (3), Luke (7), Engine Upgrade (4), Millenium Falcon title (1)

100 Total

This is a pretty simple Fat Han + Ace list. With only 2 ships, it should be quite quick to play. Also it should be easy to keep the 2 ships outside of Range 2 as Lone Wolf synergises quite nicely with Poe's ability. Only downside is that with only 6 red dice I may struggle to dish out enough damage, even if my ships are tough enough to withstand a bit.

So, do people have any tweaks suggested for either list? And which would should I play on the day? List 2 has the advantage of not needing any new cards. List 1 will need me to pick up Jan and a TLT so the extra cost could be a tie-breaker.

I like Ion, with the 2 points saved you can get auto thrusters.

List 2 will be vulnerable to multiple TLT lists I think, or swarms. But if that's what you can fly without buying anything new and you don't feel like spending more money go for Fat Han and Ace.

Ion only saves 1 point over TLT. Given it is only range 1-2, I think it is a bit overcosted vs TLT. It would not give enough for Autothrusters, maybe VI on Kyle?

Ha! Good catch.

List 1 looks really tough with double regens and focus/evade hand outs. Maybe you don't really need AT?

This is what I am hoping. With Red Ace, getting extra Evades and Poe getting Focus even when pulling reds, they should be hard to take down, even without ATs. I am leaning towards List 1, even if I do need a few extra cards.

List 2.

You will propably loose vs 6+ swarms and 3+ TLT but you will shred whispers andgive aces in general hard time.

A mate has just offered to lend me the missing cards so List 1 is viable. I am leaning in this direction as I believe at least one quad TLT Y-wing list may be present.

First list i would say :)

Tournament starts on Tuesday and I am all set for List 1 but I am having a list minute change of heart on 2 issues.

Should I ditch VI on Poe and take Cool Hand instead? Great for that one-off occasion when I want to pull a K-turn and Kyle is out of range. Or is PS10 likely to be more valuable all-round?

Depens on your meta. If you have high PS ace lists, VI is better. If your meta is mid, lowish PS, you can take Cool Hand :)

There isn't really much meta here. People like to mix it up and experiment. However the last couple of games I played both featured PS9 ships so I will hold my nerve and stick to VI, I think.

I've had the exact same list saved as option to play for a while now. I've been considering using adaptability on Poe and VI on Kyle. I just wish there was a way to fit in the Moldy Crow or some At. I just have a hard time switching from a 4 ship list I ran at my store championship.

Yeah, the lack of Moldy Crow title is a shame. Once I get my Ghost expansion I could always trade TLT for Dorsal turret and Title but that is a big drop in offensive output.

Round one of the tournement was tonight and I won both my opening games. VI on Poe turned out to be the right decision I think as game 2 was against RAC in a 99 point list. He and Poe were down to their last few hit points but Poe fired first and finished him off.

Game 1 was against a Scum list with tooled-up Bossk and some Z95s. I focussed on Bossk and took him down fairly early which just left the headhunters to mop up. I lost Poe when I forgot to use his IA which was foolish. The HWK also died eventually but Red Ace was still on full health at the end of the game.

Game 2 was against RAC and Whisper and my opponent played pretty well. The HWK went down early to focused fire although not before stripping RAC of his shields. I managed to outfox Whisper with a Talon roll from Poe in a table corner which stripped her shields before Red Ace finished her off. Then it was just a matter of whittling down RAC with focused fire. I should have won this game easily but I nearly blew it by bumping Poe into Red Ace 3 times which meant he was not Focusing when he should have been. The second mistake was when Red Ace was flying back towards me and I got my dial turned around the wrong way and flew her off the table!

Stupid mistake aside, the list worked well. The HWK proved squishy as expected but it worked OK. It kept Poe and Red Ace loaded with tokens in the early stages of the game and put out too much damage for my opponents to ignore it. By going for the easy kill, it left my X-wings alive long enough to keep dishing out the damage where it counted.

Now if I can just learn how to fly properly, I might stand a chance in round 2.

Putting Adaptability on Kyle would also help. Maybe it was a coincidence but both opponents had PS7 ships yesterday. Since it is free and there is nothing else to go in that EPT slot...

Played the last 2 rounds of the tournement and came 3rd out of 16 players with 3 wins and 1 loss. I would have won the last game if we had another turn as we were both down to 2 ships (Red Ace on my side, Poe on his) but Red Ace was still at full health while his Poe was on his last hit point. But Red Ace was 36 points vs 38 for his Poe so the game was called in his favour.

Ah well, thems the breaks. ;) I flew a lot better this time round with a lot less bumping.

That blows :/

Glad to see the list did well in any case, 3/4 is not bad at all!

T-70 X-Wing: •Poe Dameron (36)

Autothrusters (2)

Adaptability +1 (0)

•R5-P9 (3)

HWK-290: •Kyle Katarn (33)

•Moldy Crow (3)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Twin Laser Turret (6)

•Jan Ors (2)

X-Wing: •Garven Dreis (30)

Integrated Astromech (0)

•R2-D2 (4)

Total: 99/100

I've been playing around with this list, I've also swapped out Poe for a loaded Red Ace with AT, dropped VI on Kyle, and swapped droids, giving Red Ace R2-D2 and Garven R5-P9. With that Kyle is loaded with at least 5 focus tokens before attacking, so it's easy to share.
