Scum Cloaking Device

By SeerOzymandius, in X-Wing

The biggest problem with cloaking is that it uses your action, which means you can't focus for defense.

Why do you need to focus for defense? Focusing increases your odds of rolling evades. Cloaking increases the number of defense dice you roll, increasing your odds of rolling evades.

With 3 defense dice, a focus token adds an an extra 3/4 evades, on average. Two additional defense dice add an extra 3/4 evades, on average.

There are tactical considerations to make, such as the fact that if you get a bonus defense die (from range for instance), you get an additional 1/4 evades from the focus that you wouldn't have gotten from the cloak. But cloaking is a defensive action overall just as potent as focusing or evading.

Definitly going on a HWK for me, never fill their Illicit slots right now and I think 2 points are worth it for one guaranteed use of the ability of the pilot. Any additional use I get out of it is great, but not required.

Thinking about this, with most things optional. It probably works best at 29 points without crew and title, but I think I want to run the full package at least once for hillartity. Not sure what to put with it, yet, probably other new wave 8 stuff so I can try it all in one go.

Palob (20)

Dorsal (3)

Recon (3)

Cloak (2)

[28]

31 for TLT, but with cloakbyou can get in close and unload on tokenless targets

Promises fun times

List done, got everything I want to throw on the table for wave 8 scum. Hyper-U-Boat (Recspec, Deadeye, R4: ALL THE MODS!), Advanced Sensor-Zuckuss 4-LOM, the Palob I posted earlier without Moldy Crow. Looks like a fun one, I hope for some wild cloak moments! Now all I need is wave 8 to come to me.

Grab someone like Torkil Mux, whose main effectiveness is non-combat anyway, and use sparingly (so that you'll not lose it before combat is joined.)

I'm definitely going to run it on Talonbane. I don't think he's even going to be all that sad on the round that it burns out.

The cloak + his extra die at range three means something else on your list will probably get shot at first. The decloak will allow him to burn into range 1 quickly.

My plan precisely. :D

Yup, same thought regarding Talonbane. Should be fun and gives him another little edge against some other aces.

I was thinking of the following:

Guri (StarViper) [30]

  • EPT: Juke [2] Push the Limit [3]
  • System: Sensor Jammer [4] Fire-Control System [2]
  • Illicit: Cloaking Device [2]
  • Modification: Stygium Particle Accelerator [2]
  • Title: Virago [1]

Ship Total: 410

6 agility dice until she's in position, with loads of maneuverability. Might be cool.

Edit: Advanced Sensors might be more fun than Sensor Jammer. And maybe instead of Juke, you go PtL, then cloak+evade+boost/barrel roll

Decloak.

Perform free Evade action.

Push the Limit for a Boost or Barrel Roll.

Receive stress.

Perform green maneuver.

Clear stress.

Perform Boost or Barrel Roll.

Be within Range 1 of an enemy.

Receive free Focus token.

Shoot.

Receive free Target Lock.

Successfully have performed all available "actions" in one turn: (de)cloak, evade, barrel roll, boost, focus, and target lock.

Honestly, outside of running the possible "lol Guri does nearly every action in the game in one round" build, I don't think I'll use this one. I think this card is... Thematic. So, that's nice? But outside of that, I think it has limited utility and wont see top level play.

This is the list I hinted at earlier. Like I said- the only reason I am considering using cloaking device. :)

Talonbane + 2 Elite Kihraxz, all with Cloaking and Mind Link. Plus 1 Z with cloaking.

Talonbane and Z rush forward and cloak. The other fly normal (but also fast, 3 or 4 forward depending on opponents list) and focus. Even if Talonbane is in Range it's not very likely that he will receive damage (6 dice plus Focus). Second turn decloak foward, fly into the middle of your opponents and have fun (5 dice with TL and Focus if you made R1). The other two rush forward and give Focus. The biggest problem so far was getting Talonbane into range without receiving too much damage (or even being destroyed). Cloak will do that for you. If cloak stays on your ships after the initial burn it will help you later in all that moments when you need a defensive action and don't have a good shot yourself - cloak and get Focus from linked friend.

Cloaking Device is unique.

cloaking device is nice but I don't see anyone building for it giving its chance to fail. That being said I doubt you will be seeing Stygium Particle Accelerator in Scum that much. It might be used as a point filler on an ace pilot.

I would love to see Talonbane Cobra in action with a cloaking device. Although I wonder if he would have been any good pre-cloak nerf?

So percloak nerf Talbonbane cobra vs Whisper who would win?

Would depend on initiative/range.

Honestly, don't build for this rng shite fest in a tube

It is, at the utmost, 2 points for an incredibly temperamental bargain bin engine that leaves your mod slot open

Just slap it on and try not to roll focus. Must hunter should appropriately benefit the most due to being a slow bugger in need of repositioning help (also zuckuss can hit PS 9 and substitute predator with dengar crew)

Don't stygium, you're just wasting more points when it inevitable craps out on you

People write off non-ACD cloaking and decloaking for some reason even though cloak is still a great action. It offers you a huge benefit during your first engagement to be able to radically change your position with decloak. It's just a 2 point upgrade, one that would serve an Acewing build of a Starviper well.

Talon bane starts at 9 and can VI up to 11. Whisper has to VI up to 11. Range Talon Bane gets to roll 5 red at range 1 and 6 green at range 3 while whisper rolls 5 red at range 1 and 5 green at range 3. I think it would depend a little bit more than initiative.

Completely disagree. Well, perhaps stygium is a waste.

Right, Guri is going to like that super rolls and boosts, but Xizor might not get too much out of it. Maybe if you spread out the meatshields really far so he can cloak-jump between them - worth a try.

I've tried Cloak Talonbane and... in the end it's still Talonbane and he still falls apart like a wet dishrag or a pre-IA T65, and can't dodge arcs well even with the EU, and still keep his shot. Also can't cloak and still keep his shot, and if you use Stygium, you don't have EU to dodge with at all. VI/CLoak/Stim/EU. It works nicely, it's just too fragile and/or expensive.
