Countdown to FFG Star Wars Panel at GAMA - 3/16 @ 11:00 am

By Dr Lucky, in X-Wing

The event schedule for GAMA 2016 is posted here:

http://www.gamatradeshow.com/show-schedule/

GAMA is in Las Vegas, so the times are in PDT.

For those who don't know, GAMA is a trade show for the gaming industry, targeted primarily at shop owners. If the schedule looks boring, that's because this isn't a convention for gamers, it's about the business of making and selling games.

Once again, FFG has a Star Wars panel scheduled at GAMA. In years past, they've announced new products at the Star Wars panel, though not necessarily X-Wing products. In 2014, they announced Rebel Aces at GAMA (and something else, maybe something for the LCG?). Last year, they announced Imperial Assault Wave 2 and Armada Wave 2 at the GAMA Star Wars panel, while saving the X-Wing Wave 7 announcement for Star Wars Celebration Anaheim (which took place a few weeks later). This year, Star Wars Celebration is much later in the year (just three weeks before GenCon) so it probably won't be a good place for FFG announcements, especially for stuff they plan to do an early release of at GenCon. This panel is one of two natural places this spring for the next X-Wing announcement, with the other being Adepticon at the end of the month (though I don't know if FFG will have a presentation or just the Hoth System Open tournament).

My hope is that they announce some new X-Wing stuff next week at GAMA and follow it up by having the models on display at Adepticon for some high-res photography.

There are a few other Asmodee/FFG events on the schedule, with two others of particular interest:

Asmodee North America Keynote (Tuesday, 3/15 at 2:00 pm) - This is probably a big picture discussion of the merger, distribution changes, online sales policies, and the Catan acquisition. For those who are not industry insiders, there might be some discussion of new product by either Asmodee or FFG, but the trend has been that Star Wars product discussion has always been saved for the Star Wars specific panel.

FFG Organized Play (Tuesday, 3/15 at 5:00 pm) - This is mostly aimed at convincing store owners why they should run FFG OP tournaments and giving them tools to do so. There usually isn't much in the way of actual info for gamers, but it can provide a window into FFG's approach and thought process. It is possible they could announce a special tournament series like Imdaar Alpha or the Netrunner Plugged-In Tour, but I kind of doubt it. I expect this to be pretty dry.

There are also panels on retailer support and Asmoplay (Asmodee's demo program), but those likely won't have anything of interest to the average X-Wing player.

So what do you think? What are the odds we get some news from the Star Wars panel next Wednesday? It's only a week away! Unfortunately, these panels aren't generally broadcast, though there are usually people taking pictures and live-Tweeting. I won't be at the show but hopefully someone else here will be who can keep us all up to date. Any volunteers?

I'd say the odds are pretty high. They've already announced the next big wave for Imperial Assault. Now that X-Wing and Armada are the #1 and #3 miniatures games on the market, it makes sense to give them a little more fanfare.

I'm sure they will have something exciting.

Where do you see the rankings for these products in the market place?

Does this ranking represent the world market, NA, or USA?

Pretty certain the iov ratings are for US.

Thanks for the headsup on this. I will be watching with interest.

As long as the Pannel is not on the boat we may have something up!

It's also worth noting that FFG will almost certainly be selling Wave 8 and their booth in the Exhibit Hall. This the same week as the official release date, so we may well have full spoilers by then, but if we don't we should find out the rest of the unspoiled cards.

Is this the one they announced Wave 7 at?

Is this the one they announced Wave 7 at?

I believe so. It was at some sort of tradeshow around this time last year. There wasn't an official announcement article on the website for a week or two after though, all we got was what ships were in wave 7 and nothing else.

Is this the one they announced Wave 7 at?

Last year FFG used their GAMA Star Wars panel to announce Imperial Assault Wave 2 and Armada Wave 2, but kept us waiting a few extra weeks for the X-Wing Wave 7 announcement.

Yes wave 7 was announced at C7 in Anaheim. I was there. :)

We're getting closer to GAMA. Is there anyone here on the FFG boards that will be there? I would really like to find someone who plans to live tweet the Star Wars Panel.

Is not, BGG will be livestreaming interviews and demos with various publishers at GAMA. Their slot with FFG is Wednesday at 3:30, so anything announced at the Star Wars panel will presumably be fair game to talk about at that point. More info on that here:

Just 34 short hours until the Star Wars panel... I'll be watching Twitter like a hawk.

I'll be there and at the panel, I'll live post Ina new thread while at the panel.

There will be no gunboat.

Whenever I say something to the negative, the universe has a tradition of proving me wrong. So I said it.

No gunboat or TIE Avenger.

They made a mention of it on their OP Twitter account yesterday:

It looks like they are talking about the panel for Organized Play specifically, which is today at 5:00 pm. It won't be an announcement of new ships, but it could be interesting. Regardless, the big show is still tomorrow at 11:00 am.

Less than 3 hours!

BOOO PDT why not EDT.

BOOO PDT why not GMT.

Fixed that for you

Unless they introduce some sort of mission based tournaments or story driven organized events, I really don't care about Organized Play. It's just like the latest thing about all these events around the world.....it has nothing to do with me or how I play X-wing.

Hope it's something more than just OP announcement.

Considering that they already did their OP presentation, pretty certain this one will be more about FFG products.

Though, I am somewhat curious about the Asmoplay thing.
