New species: Bith

By Yaccarus, in Game Masters

I have recently gained a bit of an obsession with creating stat blocks for new species in Edge of the Empire. Characteristics not mentioned count as 2, and wound/strain thresholds count as 10+ brawn and 10+ willpower.

Bith:

3 Intellect

1 Presence

1 rank in mechanics or computers

Boost die on knowledge checks related to music

100 XP

I don't much use unofficial species any more now that I have all the books, but I would instead base the stats of the Bith off of the Bith Musician adversary in Force and Destiny. Low Brawn, high Intellect, a rank of Cool and/or Perception, and a boost die on all Perception checks. Probably 95 XP.

Not having all the books, (Just the EotE Core Book, Dangerous Covenents, Jewel of Yavin, and Mask of the Pirate Queen) I have done these based purely off of Wookieepedia research and past knowledge. These are just my ideas, so I would change my mind pretty easily if you could give some sort of reason as to why they are that way.

I pulled the numbers from the adversary stats, but most can be backed up from official guides and books. According to the New Essential Guide to Alien Species, Bith have highly developed brains, not just limited to music, and are extremely intelligent (thus a high Intellect). They are also pretty passive as a whole, possibly justifying Cool. They also have advanced eyes and exceptional olfactory senses, justifying the Perception. Adding boost to all Perception checks is an ability the adversary has, called Keen Senses.

The adversary has several characteristic at rank 3, but only one at rank 1, Brawn. Seeing as they're known for their intelligence, I figured a 3 in Intellect works, while the other two stats can be left at 2. Dock 5 from the 100 XP to represent the Keen Senses. As for wounds, maybe lower it because they aren't a martial species, so 9+Brawn, while they don't need to sleep like most other species, so maybe raise their strain to 11+Willpower.

Thanks. I will add these to the profile that I show players.

I would suggest you go read the entire “GMAC” thread at https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/128736-the-great-movie-alien-compendium/

In particular, SavageBob does a great job of detailing all his research on a species, what book says what about them, and fully and completely explaining how he came to the numbers and species description that he has.

IMO, that thread is a master class in the creation of new species for this game. If you follow his methodology, you’re unlikely to go too far off-base, and there are a number of people on these forums who can help provide useful additional guidance.

Yet ANOTHER home brew species? Really? You're just taking the bith

If you have an interest in homebrew species design, you might also check out this interview I did for the D20 Radio Blog, where we get into the nuts and bolts of that very thing.

Yeah, I read that. That was a nice incite.
