Armada still doing fine (?) - new Numbers are here

By DScipio, in Star Wars: Armada

Eclipse is the best board game ever!

Catan is far to repetitive (I'll state... for me...here).

Nice to see Armada is doing well, honestly I do not understand why retailers keep the base game priced so high comparatively to online retailer prices, yes they have potentially more overheads, but my local shops have probably had the same stock in, sat there for the better part of a year, surely selling it for £20 less and shifting a few dozen, is better than 1-2 per year.

How many board games have you played? Plus have you played War of the Ring...how about Merchants & Mauraders, Forge War, or Clash of Cultures. Eclipse is great, but not many people hear have played 75% of the top rate games to make such a statement. I would certainly put War of the Ring & M&M before Eclipse and I would also say Forge War is almost as good if not better as it needs more plays. Clash is either tied or right their or just a notch below.

Point being there are too many games now out there in the top 300 games that really can be labeled best. Oh and I forgot Twilight Struggle ...wow what an awesome game...also better than Eclipse with the right opponent (someone of roughly equal skill).

Been playing board games for over 30 years now, and yes to most of the games you mentioned, it all comes down to a persons personal preference at the end of the day, many games are that enjoyable I'd really struggle to pick one over the other, if I am being fair.

Armada is doing well. And the point about 40k and direct sales is true. Obviously, those who fear discontinuation are paranoid.

Armada's latest wave is not announced by now for two reasons IMHO. First, waiting for Asmodee integration for a variety of reasons. However, I doubt this first reason is the case. I think they are looking at one release this year's only to allow enough people to catch up and more/just as important to get the future of this game right so they don't have to revisit issues with it like they are having to do with X-wing.

I hope they are waiting on wave three for the tournament results so they can make ajust nets to the cards before they are printed. They got to be tired of the entire X-wing problems of certain ships and cards never being played. It Assualt, X-wing, and Armada are to all survive and take money from our wallets they gotta know they need to step up their game and get Armada right. People will not tolerate buying three ships of mutiples types and never play them considering the higher cost.

Also who is paying more than $65 to get the core? That is on you.

As I said in the other wave 3 forum.

I bet announcements are made at AdeptiCon to make a big deal of things.

Product pre-released at GenCon cuz its a cash cow for all companies.

FFG will be announcing some sweet stuff soon in order to get sales at GenCon. The show is too expensive to not make money there. Also last year didn't have much for Armada so I would expect a bigger Armada presence (product wise) this year. It is guesses but Privateer Press used to do its big reveal at TempleCon in February to get people excited and then that product would be ready to buy at GenCon before going on sale to the masses shortly after.

I really want to try eclipse. But cattan appeals to a far wider audience.

It is superb, if you enjoy that kind of game, I find it has a lot of potential ways to play out, and so keeps feeling fresh, at least I haven't reached saturation point with it yet. As for Catan, it's never been a thing my group of usual board gamers play often.

Is there no where you can get a game of Eclipse in to try it out?

I think you are right on with GenCon. I imagine one release this year and that would make sense in terms of advertising, production, and sales.

I am guessing with only one release this year there will be a new fighter pack with: decimators, defenders, punishers ....and for rebels, E-wing, K-wing, and Ghost with some new pilots for some of the ships with only one named pilot like the B-wing, a-wing, etc.

I am expecting a carrier focused ship for the rebels

And 3 other ships

--------

2 ships in the 45-56 point range

2 ships in the 88-104 point range

1 squadron pack

Might even see some new objectives(at least one can hope)

well said AdmiralNelson

My area is currently in the process of losing a FLGS. This was a place that routinely charged outrageous prices BUT they had excellent and available play areas and tables big enough for Armada.

I recognize that LGS have overheads that online retailers do not, but at the same time, it IS a business and pricing has to be set competitively. Most local stores are smart enough to sell items for online price+ shipping cost, enough so that if you only need 1 or 2 things you might as well support the store but if you are buying a batch its worth still going online. When I tot it all up I think i spent 50/50 FLGS/Online. Point is, sure, support your LGS but the LGS has a responsibility as a business to add value for the extra cost (e.g. online cost + shipping the value is instant gratification vs waiting for shipping at same price, any higher than that and there needs to be a whole lot of value add)

Sadly no, for the most part in my group if I dont own it we dont play it, with the exception of Dominion. Its really high on my radar though, might be a birthday wish. It looks incredible.

Also, Catan gets played by people who donmt usually go in for board games. Its simple with depth. Also super fun is Avalon for a more casual crowd, assuming you don't have that one idiot friend who thinks its cool to completely flub the game.

Really wish they had done Imperial and Rebel starter boxes. I had the hardest time getting any of my buddies to start playing armada due to the high starting cost. That was one of the great things about Xwing. You could get started for under $30. Got a ton of people hooked. I don't know if I would have picked up xwing with a $100 starter. I only did so with armada due to the strength of xwing.

my lgs has tables and product (no discount). I have been going there for almost 7 years now. its safe to say im invested in the store. I just see too many people buy online, play at the store and within a year it closes up. its happening now to this store. The FFG online retailer changes may help though.

Speaking personally, it also hurts the flgs when I go in there and they don't have what I want. I realize they have limited funds and can't carry everything, but the offer of "I can special order that for you" is up against "I can go home, click online, have it delivered to my door, and get it cheaper." I think (as Hastatior touched on in a way) a lot of these purchases are borderline "impulse?" It's there, you want it, the money is in your pocket, you buy it.

Otherwise, yeah, I look online. When I can buy 3 ships and essentially get my 4th free? Yeah...

I play at home and support that instead.

I would suggest the problem here is not the customer. Being angry with people for going with the lowest price is like being angry with fish for swimming. Pointless!

Why would a manufacturer have a pricing structure so that customers are incentivized to support people who do less to help sell the manufacturer's goods over those who do more to help the manufacturer? This is why I said in a previous thread that the pricing structure changes by FFG are likely a good thing and a net benefit for the community, even if the marginal price per miniature goes up (as long as it's not way, way up).

Aligning "who should I buy from" re: prices with "who should I buy from" re: supporting the community is what really needed to happen. Again, good work FFG.

Agreed and I really wish all companies would follow suit. Sure it will suck for a handful of people but the number of game stores gone from ten years ago is staggering. Its not all online sales but its a big part.

I am lucky to now have two stores that support X Wing and one that wants to see Armada take off. Prior to 8 months ago I had none.

That being said, if I can get the majority of my stuff at the stores I feel like I'm doing my part. That being said, full retail for the larger items (see the Ghost or ISD) is usually what forces me online.

It's simple economics. There is unfortunately only so much play money in my budget for plasticrack. I don't splurge a lot, but sometimes you need to make the financial decision.

Its called Prack© get it right

Pardon me for the ignorance, but what is this online retailer restructuring mumbo jumbo y'all are talking about? Is this a pattern established by Asmodee (restriction of maximum online discount?)

That is exactly it, DUR.

I believe it is nothing more than cutting out enay and second hand sellers from home who hoard certain items until they are out of print temporarily and then extort customers on Amazon and eBay. They are going to restrict distribution to channels that are customer freindly. That is how I read the release and since I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once you can take that to the bank.

how is everyone forgetting about twilight!!!!!!

also WizKids is doing the same thing

Cost of armada core foe a retailer to buy is just under £50 add VAT etc here in the UK it's hard to make any profit if prices lowered too much for a bricks and Mort store like ours. We would love to get more into the game if we could if that was what was stopping it.
