Gathering your pool and obstruction

By Hastatior, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Another stupid rules question I am only asking because I am insecure and need community to confirm because you are all smarter than me:

Was at a tourney, opponent was a good guy, known to me from previous tourneys and other interactions so it was a pretty friendly game (which i was playing poorly and pretty much resigned to lose) so I didn't challenge this at all at the time, but it niggled, so I have to come ask here

he was gathering dice for an attack against an objective ship in most wanted. The armament was 1 red 1 blue, it was at long range and obstructed and his command was concentrate fire.

My understanding here is that there is no shot. i.e. he goes to gather his attack pool and has no medium range and his long range is obstructed. At this point it would be determined that there is no attack.

What in fact happened was he gathered a pool of zero dice, concentrated fire to add a die, and then added the objective ship die, he rolled a double and a blank ( i think) and then TRCd to 4 damage. So in retrospect an attack that should not even have fired got a respectable 4 damage off....

Which version is correct? I'm pretty sure you can't "modify dice" if you have no dice in your attack pool to begin with?

Ordinarily, you Gather and roll your Dice applicable to Range, and taht forms your pool.

However, with Obstruction, there is an interrupt between the Gather and Roll where you Discard a Die.

You gather your Dice at Range.

You discard a Die. In this case, its your only die, Red.

- At this point, you have 0 Dice in your Pool, and your Attack is Cancelled....

...

But let's give them the benefit and say the Attack is NOT CANCELLED here....

He Gathered a Die pool of 0, to which he added a Concentrate Fire Die.

Concentrate Fire Adds a Die of a Colour that is Already in your Pool, To your Pool... .

So, he has no Die, he has nothing to add... A Concentrate Fire used at This point would be worthless.

Most Wanted adds a Die of any Colour that is already in his Attack Pool to his Attack Pool...

Well, will you look at that, there's 0 Dice in teh Attack Pool, so there's no Dice of any Colour...

Huh. Look at that.

0 Dice.

Okay, so total, total benefit... Let's add Ackbar into it.

It works with the Attack NOT cancelling is if you add Ackbar, which specifies Two Red Dice... So you'd Get your Pool of 0, add Ackbar for 2 Reds... Concentrate Fire for a Red (only Choice), and then Most Wanted for a Red (only Choice).

...

But it doesn't work that way.

If you have 0 Dice in your attack pool, the Attack is Cancelled...

He would not be able to attack - there is no pool, so the attack is cancelled before he can add anything.

Thank you! Nice to have it confirmed.

You probably already know this, but I'll add this just in case:

If you have cards that adds to your Battery armament (like Enhanced armaments, for example) instead of adding in the "Modify dice", then the extra die is added before Obstruction have the change to cancel the attack. So if your opponent would have had Enhanced armaments instead of a Concentrate fire dial, then he could have done exactly what he did, since he gathers 2 red dice from the start, and then remove one from the obstruction, and the adds the Objective die.

When you say Battery Armament you are referencing the symbols on the card and the base. You are not doing anything to them.

You have to Increase said Battery Armament for anything to happen.

The attack pool is what you rolled.

You have to Add to bring more dice to the attack pool.

So, Increase happens prior to the roll and Add is after the initial roll

You add dice to your attack pool after rolling dice. Obstructions remove dice before rolling them.

The only dice that are taken before rolling are your Battery/Anti-Squadron Armament dice as indicated by your ship card and any modifications that increase or add to your Battery Armament.

If your attack is obstructed, you remove a die before rolling. If that removes all of your attack dice, it means you don't roll any dice and never reach the add/modify dice step.
