T-70 Markings resources

By Red 7, in X-Wing

Has anyone been able to find any sources that show the markings on the new T-70s for anything other than Poe's ship?

I see that Poe's black T-70 has five stripes on each wing (two grey and 3 orange), but I have not seen any other wing markings as of yet..

I am unsure how these marking correspond to his title of "Black Leader"

The usual sources like Wikia and google searches have not proved too helpful as of yet...

Any help in regards to links or speculation will be greatly appreciated

I don't think there's much out there. The visual guide encyclopedia has that one page worth of stuff on the X-Wing Squadrons, and it's very minimal at best. It spends far more time on the helmets of Atsy, Pava, Snap, and Nien than it does on the X-Wings themselves. All we really learn is that Poe's black X-Wing is specially modified and that, while he's Black Leader, there wassn't a Black Squadron. As Black Leader, he was in command of Red and Blue Squadron, the two sub-groups of the Resistance's X-Wing forces (which presumably composed in total relatively few fighters).

Since it looks like dogfighting in the TFA was all CGI, it's also unlikely that there were models made for the other T70 X-Wings. The behind-the-scenes photos of the X-Wing models from A New Hope are how we learned so much about the markings and patterns on the specific T65s of Red Squadron. Presumably, there is nothing (nor will there be anything) comparable for the T70s of TFA. We also know who flew what to help with Markings (Garven was Red 1, Wedge Red 2, Biggs Red 3, Luke Red 5, Porkins Red 6). We know Ello Asty and Snap Wexley and Nien Nunb and Jess Pava from the toys/visual encylopedia page, but we have no idea what their call signs were or if they were in Red or Blue Squadron.

So, the bad news is that there's literally almost no information out there, and we're not likely to get more than we already have. The good news, though, is that you're imagination can fill in all the blanks and you can paint up your T70s however you best see fit. I had a lot of fun painting mine up, half Red and half Blue. :)

Thank you for the thorough response.

Too bad there isn't more information on the markings though :(

I think that I am going to go with Blue T-70 X Wings and just make minor changes in order to distinguish them from one another.

Thanks again for putting all of that effort into your response.

You're likely to have a pretty good resource on April 1st when the Blu-ray hits.

Of course, happy to help. I had already done all of the legwork because I was very excited to paint up my T70s. I very much enjoyed painting the "correct" markings for my T65s (Red 1, Red 2, Red 3, Red 5, Red 6) and was looking forward to doing it for some T70s. Alas, I painted up Poe's Black 1--even though I think it's kind of silly to have "Black 1" as the leader of a squadron that only includes Blue and Red callsigns, but that's an aside--and then did two in Red and two in Blue. I'm pretty happy with the results.

Overall, I was very disappointed that TFA was pretty lacking in space combat fluff and depth. We don't get any callsigns and outside of the visual encyclopedia we don't even get names for anyone except Poe. The dogfight sequences were all very fast with no depth or detail into anything going except Poe's "god mode" maneuvers. Quite a departure from ANH, ESB's battle of Hoth, and even the battle of Endor in RotJ gave us a much bigger and better sense of the space battle and its participants.

I'm hoping Rogue One does a better job at giving us something more along those lines to enrich our X-Wing narratives and background.

That is true.

Perhaps I will hold off painting my T-70s until then...

I would say that there is a good chance that you will get your wish with Rogue One, at least the name implies that there will be more ship stuff involved.

I totally agree with you that painting up the named character X Wings is a blast, and I am likewise disappointed that the same detail is lacking with the new T-70s... Perhaps DailyRich is right, and we will see lots of goodies and details on the Blu-ray.

Maybe there will be some behind-the-scene extras on the Blu Ray, but since I don't think they used models for the ships (but rather CGI) there may not be much,

As to pausing scenes from the BluRay to pull detail out, I'm not optimistic. I tried to do the same with relevant scenes from the trailers but there just wasn't enough detail on the blurry fast-paced dogfight scenes. Hopefully there is something of use, though, keep us posted if you find anything!

That's actually not unusual in the real world.

Take standard US Army Armor doctrine for call signs. "Black 6" will be the company commander (though typically the company name is substituted for Black ... So Assassin 6, Bandit 6, etc). First platoon is Red, second White, third Blue, fourth Green. Platoon leaders are "1" (infantry uses 6 for PLs, though). Other tanks/tracks use their bumper number (Red 2, Blue 4, etc).

So.....

Looking at the wing markings on Black 1, I find it very hard to determine how T-70s are marked...

The T-65s markings made sense in that 1 mark was present on each wing for Red 1, 2 for Red 2, and so on...

Poe's ship has three orange and two grey marks on each wing

What have you guys been able to come up with and/or heard that helps to make any kind of sense to the markings?

I think there is atleast 1 non-CGI source in the movie and that is the full scale 1:1 prop for Poe that got disabled by a single shot from a stormtrooper blaster rifle. Come to think of it, why are those things not 5 shields 1 hull?

Even that prop is Poe's, and has the same markings as his black T-70 :(
