Unwritten Store Championship rule?

By mikemcmann, in Star Wars: Armada

My group of 9 members have been to the last 5 store championsips all with a 2-3 hr drive with 3 more store championships happening in the next week.

We generally find each store very welcoming and the local players want outsiders to come to bolster the numbers but also experience what and how others fly fleets

So, I want to make sure I am not breaking some unwritten politeness rule....Are store championships ONLY for people that "regularly" play at that store? I enjoy the game immensely, and have the ability to travel to other stores to play. Is it impolite or inappropriate to go to other areas to play in store champs? Its just about the friendly competition to me.... I mean, heck, I gave away my extra copies of "byes"So is there some consensus that I am unaware of that says its a "no-no" to play in "non-home-based events?"Thanks fellasMike

Going to other stores is great, and players should see meeting new players with new ideas as an opportunity.

Also, keep in mind that quite a few people have schedules that might prevent them from attending games in their immediate area. Not every store gets a store championship.

I think a lot of it is the attitude of the traveling player as well. As long as you are obviously there to play and not just to "steal" prizes from the locals, go for it. Whenever I have traveled I make sure to buy some stuff at the local store and show support, make friends with the locals, etc. the worst stories I have heard is a group of 4-5 who travel to another area and take all the top prizes and never return. Doesn't sound like what you are doing, so I say, don't feel guilty at all. Star Wars gamers (and fans) are generally some of the nicest people to strangers you will meet.

I think anyone who buys a ticket to an event should have an equal opportunity to win weather a regular or not.

We would be appalled if we ever heard of unfair judging decisions going to people just because they are regulars etc.

If a store sells tickets to the general public then good luck to anyone who attends. If the locals aren't good enough to win then at least they can see the list, tactics and play styles of an unknown player who brings new ideas and shakes up a local meta.

I'm traveling 2-3hrs (depends on the trains) to an SC on the weekend

- (I made the trip maybe a fortnight ago to workout how to get to the store and pay the entry fee)

:)

Here in NoVA, I see most people playing around at all the stores in the region, especially as part of the league match ups. I haven't seen an insular store scene much. The NoVA Fleet FB group seems to range quite a ways around DC and all interact in various places.

So this whole bye rules is legit? If you win more than one you're suppose to give it to the runner up?

Correct. The TO is supposed to enforce that.

Was just at another championship yesterday and me and the next two places below all already had byes, so it went to fourth place.

Totally legit and rational to allow others the chance at the regional bye

I've always felt store championships are supposed to be competitive. I don't fault anyone who plays at several in order to practice for regionals. I myself have only been to 1 SC, over an hour from me, and I plan to go to 2 more, one about an hour away and the other 35 minutes. Those are the closest stores for me. I took 2nd at the first one, and want to use a competitive list again to see if my list can really compete, or if I was just lucky. Of course, if I happen to win the next one, I'll probably just use an experimental or "fun" list for the last one.

Here in Pennsylvania, I haven't seen such a massive showing of Armada players thus far that any store would want to turn people away. As others have said, just try to be a good sport and buy something at the store, even if it's just a small thing. But save the "locals only" idea for the less competitive tournaments. If your store doesn't want "outsiders" showing up, they shouldn't be on the store championship circuit.

So another question then. I went to an SC where it was just 2 people, the other guy had already competed and won a store championship. The TO apparently didn't know this so he was awarded a second bye. Of course it obviously doesn't count for him but is it possible for me to get that bye back? And if so, how would I go about doing it?

Also, another question I had pop up while typing this. I travel to a different state and win a bye in the SC there, then could I come back to my home state and win a bye there? Would it count for 2 different regionals since they would be in different states? How exactly would that work?

It's not about 2 different regionals. You get one bye. That's it. Good luck. In California, we're going to have 2 Armada Regionals (Sacramento and San Diego), with another up in Washington for anyone who wants to make a long drive. If you want to go to multiple regionals that's cool, but per the tournament rules you have to pass the bye down to the next eligible player. They may only be able to attend the one.

The minimum number of competitors for the SC to count is 4, so neither of you should have gotten the bye. (I found this out by winning a SC for which only one other person turned up. Apparently no one else in the area wanted to spend valentines day playing a shipping game -.-)
