Unwritten Store Championship rule?

By mikemcmann, in Star Wars: Armada

So, I want to make sure I am not breaking some unwritten politeness rule....

Are store championships ONLY for people that "regularly" play at that store? I enjoy the game immensely, and have the ability to travel to other stores to play. Is it impolite or inappropriate to go to other areas to play in store champs?

Its just about the friendly competition to me.... I mean, heck, I gave away my extra copies of "byes"

So is there some consensus that I am unaware of that says its a "no-no" to play in "non-home-based events?"

Thanks fellas

Mike

I haven't heard of this at all and I think it is quite regular for people to travel 1-2 hours or more to attend a Store Championship. The more people that attend the better.

Did you get some kind of attitude from people at one recently that makes you ask this question?

My personal thought is... you play to have fun and make new friends and exchange war stories! In the end, it's a game of little plastic ships and it's not the swag has any monetary value outside our community.

That being said, the unwritten rule in my parts is that if you win with a list at the Store level, you retire it until Regionals and beyond...

Since it is a competitive format, I think it's good to cross-pollinate and see new builds... helps grow the community and makes everyone better players!

No, play what you want, whereyou want.

Just be civil, and polite- you've pointed out you are going to someone else's turf, what you and your store might find acceptable may not at another.

I think most places welcome new players as they typically are playing the same players all the time. Go to whatever championship you want, if they cant beat you they dont deserve the BYE. If you have one or more BYEs under your belt I would advise against telling everyone about it though.

The TO at one of our SC's here actually said it's written in the tournament packet that, if the winner already has a BYE, it should be given to the highest-ranking player who dies not already have one (this came up at one of ours). Can't confirm, just what he said.

That's probably a good policy. Byes don't "stack" do they? Winning three Store Championships doesn't give you 24 points does it? That sounds dumb.

The last Store Championship I went to was in the middle of Connecticut. Most of the players were from Boston with one from NYC, so you're talking a good 1-2 hours for most.

Wow, you're soooooo generous. /sarcasm

The rules explicitly mandate that players who have already won BYES must pass the BYE down to the next ranked player.

Yes, if you already have a bye it goes to 2nd place if you win it.

As for traveling l, look at Richard Hsu. He has been from MO to NV to AL, almost literally coast to coast. No issues. Me, I hablce traveled 3 hours more than once for a SC.

I traveled out of town at one point with some friends and won an X-Wing SC. The local guys were all very friendly and happy to have some new folks to play.

I think that they were disappointed that a local didn't win, but not so much that we were made to feel bad about coming into town to play.

Has he won any significant events?

Personally, I love tournaments, but I'll never get on a plane to play X-Wing, especially at an event smaller than Worlds. Some folks just have lots of time and lots of money, I guess.

Jees I have to drive 1.5 hours just to get to a game store let alone a store to play a game in. :)
even the local club where we play once a month is an hour away from me. I would not worry about it Go and Play and have fun.

I would on another hand at least buy something while at the store for the competition. ;)

No, the Byes are only good for the First Round anyway...

So even if you were able to collect three, you can only Bye the first round Anyway.

Thank you for the thoughtful comments fellas

minus this one:

There's always a douchebag out there...

I was not bragging or in any way being negative. I was sincerely asking if there was some polite method to store championships. AND, I was being genuine in making sure others had the byes for regionals. Christ....some people just have to be bitchy...

Anyway,

I have a good friend that explicitly will not compete in "other" store championships. I had never heard of that paradigm, so wanted to gauge the community. To me, in other game systems, traveling was a big part of the fun. Meeting new players, making friends, seeing new styles of play, good competition, building the national community..etc..etc.. I wanted to clarify is all...

Thanks!

McMann

Inclusion is always better than exclusion. I'm always happy to see new players and more diverse opponents.

SCs are for whoever registers and pays the store and abides by whatever codes of conduct the store hold

Mike! You should totally travel and go over the top with it. Make a cloak out of store champ plaques, have a guy behind you playing the Imperial March on a boombox when you walk into a store...etc. :)

For the sake of disclosure... I know there's been people who think that the Store Championship is supposed to be for regulars for that store alone.

There's been a number of posts about it on the X-Wing boards about prize snipers and the like. I haven't seen hardly any of those, this year so perhaps the mentality changed.

But it is possible to go to a store and not be well received if you're not a 'local' and do well.

hahaha! I like that! :)

I have been very well received and making friends at all the stores (most of the players have exchanged traveling and came to my large tourney as well) Havent had one inkling of this thought. My buddy just said it, and it got me thinking. I didn't want to offend anyone and have ill feelings.

As for prizes, I honestly don't care about any of the prizes. Its just my competitive nature. I enjoy a challenge and I enjoy competitive events. Casual play is ok for training, but its the tourneys that I really prefer. Been that way in all game systems. I usually just pass on the prize support to someone else, not out of some magnamimous behavior, but seriously because they don't hold much interest to me.

And as for "byes", I am not even sure I will use them. I think at a regional level, I would rather play and take my opportunity for a higher score on my own than a bye score.

I appreciate all the feedback though for sure. I am not as "in touch" socially and empathically as some are and my wife has told me I need to practice at it....hehe... ;)

Sentry Box went to someone not from Calgary - and I know this person was intending on cruising as many store championships as possible.

It Happens.

All you can do is beat them on the Day.

...

Unless you're me, doing something stupid, like taking 5 Vics and Motti on a Dare...

Hey, 50 hull is nothing to sneeze at! :)

What if the person is going to more than one regional as well? Then having 2 +byes would be good.

It is entirely possible, yes.

But I'm a Full-Time Stay at home Dad who funds his own very limited hobby out of what he can commission paint for people...

... So that amount of travel and dedication just doesn't compute in my head :)

...

But that being said, if the Store Championship tournament kit does state that if you have already won a bye, it should go to the second place person, then having multiple byes means you've done something shifty and not in the spirit - or letter - of the game and tournament system rules as written.

I drove 2 hours or so from cincy to Columbus for my store championship this past weekend, won it btw. Actually didn't even know about the byes until he handed it to me. Lol
