Targeting Coordinator and "acquire target lock"

By horsepire, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all,

Putting together an epic list with the transport and looking at targeting coordinator. The text reads: Energy: You may spend 1 energy to choose 1 friendly ship at Range 1-2. Acquire a target lock, then assign the blue target lock token to the chosen ship.

The transport does not have the target lock action in its action bar, but the FAQ clearly specifies that acquiring a target lock is different from performing an acquire target lock action, so I presume that the transport can make use of the targeting coordinator even without the action in its bar.

What I can't figure out is what "acquire target lock" means. The target lock action allows you to acquire a target lock on an enemy ship at range 1-3 (paraphrasing, because I'm too lazy to look up the exact wording). But as the FAQ states, "acquire target lock" is different from a target lock action.

So, here are some possible interpretations of "acquire target lock" in this context:

  • The transport can acquire a target lock on an enemy ship at range 1-3 of the transport, and assign the blue token to a friendly ship at range 1-2.
  • The transport can acquire a target lock on an enemy ship at range 1-3 of the chosen friendly ship, and...
  • The transport can acquire a target lock on an enemy ship at ANY range, and...

Unless I'm missing something, the third option seems most correct under the rules-as-written, but it feels wrong.

I looked up the rules reference, and again, the only range restriction on target locking is for the acquire target lock action.

Thoughts?

The rules reference gives you the process of acquiring a target lock, whether it comes from an action, or other special ability, such us Targeting Coordinator or Fire control system, amongst others.

Thus, Targetting Coordinator is not an action, but it follows the standard procedure of acquiring target locks, which are limited to range 3 or less.

  • The transport can acquire a target lock on an enemy ship at range 1-3 of the transport, and assign the blue token to a friendly ship at range 1-2.

This one.

'Acquire' is a means to let a ship without the ability to take a specified action (might be stressed, might not have the action, etc) to receive the benefits of it. For example, a phantom with FCS can still receive a TL without having the TL action. Similarly, abilities like Soontir allow him to assign a focus token to him when he would be otherwise unable to take a focus action (because he was stressed, or already took a focus action). So acquire / assign are just methods to bypass those few restrictions.

Thanks for the responses. That's how I'll play it, and it makes the most intuitive sense, .
