A Better Void Pilot

By venkelos, in Rogue Trader

So, I'm thinking of doing something silly, and need a little help. The Tau are well-known for their advanced tech, and sometimes also for their inferior pilots. thing is, I sort of want really good opposing pilots, so I need some assistance from the more "I've played everything" gamers.

In the game Traveler, at one point the Ancients elevated dolphins, as their intellectual potential was impressive, and their growth in a liquid environment gave them superior spatial awareness, and 3D space-thinking. I'm trying to say all this intelligently; here's hoping I get it right. Well, in my Expanse fluff, the Tau have started to make a limited presence in the outward reaches, due to Eldar ****ery. These Tau are from the Jericho Reach, which is in Ultima Segmentum, where the Saharduin also happen to be (they were several decades ago, anyway.) I'm thinking it could be cool to have the Tau in my space do the usual Tau thing, and field auxiliaries from other races that can make up for their shortcomings. I sort of wish they could find them in the Expanse, but, even being decades old fluff, it's the wrong side of the galaxy, if the Tau didn't bring them along, from the Reach. For the uninformed, back in the Craftworld Skittles, "see the rainbow, be aced by the rainbow!" days, the Saharduin, or Piscean Warriors were a race of human-equivalent-tech, hostile, shark-like aliens in Segmentum Ultima, that the Imperium could cordon, but not crush (waterworlds were apparently harder to bombard from space). I figure if dolphins can be so great in the ocean, and thirty years of Traveler seems to think so, sharks can't be too far off, and I am thinking of having them aide the Tau in fighting the Calixis/Koronus Battlefleets, and Qel-Drake.

What I'm wondering is, mechanically, what might be a good, little add-on to the fighters, describing them as such? I am looking for something to show their skill as pilots, preferably of a mindset more adept at thinking in three dimensions, where humans are usually not (think how the Nids attacked from below the galactic disk, and nobody saw it coming), maybe them getting Void Tactician, or, barring a somewhat expensive talent for free, from the start, something to make them seem useful, and better than the Tau fighter craft, to help fight those that the Imperium will launch. Any ideas would be appreciated. Yes, it's silly, but I'd like to see what you can think of. Thanks much.

I'm not sure an aquatic creature would be that much better than a terrestrial one in a void battle.

Fighting in the void where there is no resistance at all and momentum effectively lasts until counteracted has got to be worlds apart from fighting in any sort of atmosphere.

That said perhaps a greater sense of spacial awareness and the extra reinforcing the fighter craft need in order to contain liquid rather than gas means their fight craft would be resilient. Give them the equivalent of Elder holofields to show that the pilots have a better awareness of spacial positioning and avoid enemy fire better and when they do get hit their crafts are hardier.
