Play mats thoughts suggestions

By mobow213, in Star Wars: Armada

I received my grip mat from break from reality almost 5 months after it was ordered.

The good, it stick to the table big time. The image looks greats one sold 3 by 6 field means no spilt down the middle.

The bad. It doesnt seem to live up to it name of grip mat. Cards slide easily across it surface, shaking the table or little bumping such as with the range ruler can move ships.

Its a bit pricey and was a long wait. But will need to try atleast two more games before i make my final choice. Image wish i love it, but not sold on the grip being any better for the price. It is a major improvement over the vinyl mats. But compared to f.a.t.s and FFG mats not so much

Would of love it if there was a option to have the deployment area a slightly shade or briefly outlined.

So what every else thought on mats. On customs 3by6 or just go with two of the ffg ones

Made my own out of an industrial rubber floor mat form Lowe's, and some spray paint spritzing. Took me 30 min, and about $35. 4'x 6', with a 6" card area per side. Less slippage, to the point, a single card is difficult to pickup.

This sounds like a great solution. Out of interest, how long ago was it that you did the spray paint? Has it stayed on the mat or flaked off? I imagine that it's not the best material to adhere to, but I'd love to be wrong - don't want to shell out on an expensive mat, but having something that rolls up would make a big difference.

I got one of these from deepcut studios:

http://www.deepcutstudios.com/product/wargames-terrain-mat-stars/

the mousepad version in 6x4 is 54 pounds, and is gorgeous in every way.

The only criticism I have is that after a lot of use, the edges of the mat may start to fray, but I believe this problem could solved by taking it to a seamstress and having the edge hemmed.

I got myself a cheapy vinyl banner printed from pixart printing. Image quality is fantastic, vinyls thick enough to last a good while and it was only about £12 for a 6x3 shipped. Only real issue is if you don't store it safely it creases easily. Luckily it shipped in a card board tube :P

At least 6 months ago. And it has been through a couple of Windex wipedowns, to get rid of minor spills. The pant has lasted better than even I expected.

Hobby Lobby black vinyl. 2yds, about $15. Grips well, wipes clean, rolls nicely for storage.

I got a black yoga mat for roughly $20. while it doesn't really grip, you can press down to make intents to hold things. also its great if you are a knuckle leaner like myself. I keep it in the car and use it for other projects too but it works really well and is comfortable to play on.

Has anyone tried the cloth mat from Deep Cut Studios? I'm looking for an ultra portable option, and I only found one video that showed it. It shipped in what looked like a sandwich bag, so it had some serious creases. I'm wondering if those eventually come out.

I have 2 6x4 star field PVC mats from Deep Cut Studios and was impressed with the quality.

Their mouse mat option was removed from the website over the winter but seems to be available again so I'll probably get myself a 6x3 mouse mat asteroid mat from Wayland.

Did you get a "Starfield Sector III" mat? If so, the KS owner made a post last week about an entire pallet of star mats that he thought were not grippy enough for his standards and that he wasnt going to ship them to backers. Sounds like you are not a kickstarter backer abd just ordered from him website, like I did.

My mat, a "Starfield Sector IV" is supposed to get to him tomorrow or thrs, another pallet of mats. Im concerned.

You should read his latest 2-3 kickstarter update posts. I tried a smallish gripmat lasr year and it was SUPER grippy, to the point where Armada ships couodnt slide on them without extreme force. This is why I ordered one.

really sad to here about the grip mat: i use ye olde amazon yoga mat and i for one find it pretty dang grippy (i can move the mat and all yhe ships stay in place!) Berger, what brand are you using? Also, could we get a link to the lowes mat? :)

no idea a buddy ordered them from some online yoga store when his girl ordered a new mat.

I do love my yoga mat i use it for camping, car repairs, tons of non armada stuff.

Not to a doe.

I have a vinyl one and I do not like it. I want a mouse pad one.

I got one of the bad grip mats yesterday and the owner emailed me saying that it will be replaced. It is only marginally better than an FFG mat, which isn't close to the grip mat standards. He said the replacement would take about 10 days, so I'm figuring 6 months based on how well he's made his estimates so far. Really, really disappointed. Don't do business with them right now - this new 3rd gen grip mat is definitely not ready for prime time yet...

I bought the 4'x6' from here and absolutely love it.

Don't be cheap. You put hundreds of dollars into a FF game that you'll have for years and some of you are going to Lowe's hobby lobby. Come on man. No you need to pomp out everything just the mat. The mat is as important as the nice ships. Don't be like all those Warhammer people who spend thousands and never paint their stuff or do it poorly. Asthestics are important...if not for you spare your playing partners the unsightly experience. Step up for the love of the game.

Step up. If not for yourself, at least for the people playing with you would want the Star Wars experience. When traveling light years you deserve to go first class. $30 extra dollars and you can be proud of the look instead of being proud you pinched some pennies.

I wish I could not be cheap.

But I've scraped and commission painted for every single cent that's gone towards Armada.

$9 worth of black felt and some craft paint I use on painting minis flicked on with an old toothbrush and a stick. Its bigger then my 4'x8' table. :)
