Spectators at XWing tourney finals?

By Plainsman, in X-Wing

At Regionals you are going see the vast majority of final games going off between midnight and 2 am. I am surprised that the finalist are there at that point let alone spectators. And I would bet you would witness better games earlier in the day when brains are still working.

Not at the Mt. View, California regionals. The plan is for 6 or 7 rounds of Swiss, depending on attendance, on June 4th. The top 16 will then come back the next day, June 5th, to duke it out for the title.

Some sanity for a change. Had a lot of people saying that a two day tournament would never work I am glad they weren't correct.

It's kind of early to say that it worked. Even after the fact "working" will be highly subjective.

A bunch of people are right out because it's already hard enough to get a single weekend day to dedicate to X-Wing, two is pretty much out of the question. Folks with a long enough drive are probably going to have to add a night of hotel stay which will probably exclude even more players.

What do you do on day two when 3 of your top 16 don't show up and you don't find out they aren't coming until it's time for round one to start? Do you just grab the highest placing players from the day before that just happened to show up at the venue with all of their stuff?

In my experience the specatators tend to be the people that carpooled with the winners ands did not make the cut themselves

This is why I never carpool with better players.

Hahaha, I can see it now.

'Hey dude, you want a lift to store champs this weekend?'

'Where'd you finish at the last one you attended?'

'Second'

'Nah man, I'm good'

Store champs I generally stay to the end. They're reasonably local, I have to get the time off with the wife until the end anyway as if I say I'll be back at six then make the cut its gonna be a world of pain waiting for me. Regionals however, I'm generally gone when in out as the drives are significantly longer.

At my last store champ, interestingly about six people stayed to watch the semis but by the time the finals started it was me, my opponent and the store owner. I did find that a bit odd

How about your tournaments?

30+ people stayed for the finals last year, at our Nationals.

Nationals and Worlds are different animals. A lot of people traveled far and likely have hotels for the night anyways. So after dinner you can either go sit in the hotel room and veg out to the TV or go watch some more games and maybe pick up a tip or 2.

I'm done and ready to go home once i'm out. Mostly because it's been a long day and I'd like to get home. But also partly for the selfish reason I'm upset that I didn't make the cut, or lost in a top round.

I believe the TO will be asking the top 16 if they will be back the next day for the finals. If there are those that can't make it, he'll ask players that placed 17th or lower until all 16 slots are filled. Furthermore, I believe there is a non-standard X-Wing tourney planned for the same day for those who don't make the sweet 16 but would like to come back for more X-Wing.

So it's not really the Top 16 then.

It's the top 20'ish or something that can manage the extra time off and cost of staying. Or possibly they'll call it the Top 16, but at an absolute worst case it'll be the Top 17-32. It's almost like they should just pick a pool of random players and ask who wants to stay for Day 2.

How on earth is this a legitimate way to really have the top players at the competitions? It's more like the ones with the money and/or time off and/or forgiving partners.

Stop feeding the previous troll.

Like so many have said before...if you don't like a tournament you don't have to go!!! It is a much better way to see who the best x-wing player is...as opposed as who has the endurance to make it until 3 am.

From the responses so far, I have come to the conclusion that tournaments really don't show who the "best" players are. Since there are so many factors preventing many ppl from attending. And other factors which may see those "best" players not stay for the final cut! Are tournaments about quality games or quantity of games!?!

You know what I see in your post? Someone who's whining about it not being fair that some can set a weekend aside to play X-Wing while others can't. Well now bucko, let me tell you something that the "let's give everyone participation trophies so they don't feel bad" crowd didn't. Life isn't fair, there will always be disappointment so deal with it. The venue has given a 3 months heads up as to their plans for the regional. Need time off from work? Plenty of time to arrange it. Need a place to stay? Plenty of time to get with friends to work something out. Travel? Again plenty of time to arrange transportation. Have a partner? Again there's plenty of time to work out a deal with he/she. And if you can't work something out? Oh well, life is full of disappointments so get used to it. I'd like to go to events like other Regionals, Adepticon and Worlds at FFG's HQ but can't afford the trip. Do I whine and complain that it's not fair that I can't go but others can? Nope. I accept it and just move on. It's the adult thing to do.
