Fun With: Tel Trevura

By BRAINJACKALexe, in X-Wing

Hey guys. I'm a long time X wing player, but first time posting. I'd like to make a small series talking about some pilots I'm interested in and some fund builds to go with them. Wave 8 offers many interesting pilots, so expect more posts in the future. Well enough of the introduction, time for the man of the hour!

Tel Trevura has a very interesting ability: "The first time you would be destroyed, instead cancel any remaining damage, discard all Damage cards, and deal 4 facedown Damage cards to this ship."

This is the kind of ability you need to build around to use it effectively.

Tel Trevura (30)

+Predator

+"Gonk"

+R5-P8

+Punishing One

+Hull Upgrade

Total 53

Expensive, but it is built to last. While it is tempting to put on engine upgrade to run and use GONK, Tel NEEDS the hull upgrade to make the most of his ability. I've played tested this is a few times and had a lot of fun with it. The main problem with Tel in general that he crumbles under focus fire. So I made this other list I like a little bit more. (Though some may argue its effectiveness)

Tel Trevura

+Determination

+Dengar

+Salvaged Astromech

+Punishing One

+Hull Upgrade

Total 51

Now I am in LOVE with determination. It only good on a few ships (Leebo) and it can either do nothing all game or SAVE YOUR LIFE. So with the high hull count of 6 Tel is very vulnerable to critical hits. Then the question "Why Dengar and not Gonk?" comes up. Defense does not win games, offense does. When you fly Tel you NEED either Predator, PTL, or Dengar in order to make him worth all the points. Both lists are very fun to fly, but I prefer the determination build to survive clutch moments and for the extra 2 points.

Thanks for reading and have fun with this cool pilot. (Sorry if I rambled, it's first time please be gentle)

What about Lone Wolf? Not quite as good as Predator for offense, but it makes the most out of your extra 2 Hull + any regeneration Gonk gives you. With a Turret, he stands a good chance of making the most out of it.

Very true, just Lone Wolf is very dependent on how many other ships you fly with it. The only time I like flying 2 ships in a Scum list is Brobots and sometimes Dual Firesprays. Lone Wolf is still a fantastic choice, just not for me.

You need to branch out! I've tried dual Firesprays and dual Aggressors, but the real magic happens when you mix that Firespray and Aggressor into a potent stew of awesomeness. So it will be with Tev Trevura, who should be a hoot alongside Boba Fett or IG-88B.

I like that. I think I'd run it with 48 points of HLC/FCS/AT/CrackBot, since whatever isn't Tell Trevor is likely to be drawing fire.

Exactly, Tel is a great distraction and can fit well with a lot of other ships. Target priority confusion is a great benefit!

I've been running Tel a lot too and I love it. I like the first list but I have been using Experimental Interface and Unhinged Astromech. With EI I'm either charging or gaining a shield each turn and that has been better in the long run than the two extra hull from Hull Upgrade.

Without a doubt the greatest Tel build I have seen yet has been (and I'm trying to remember this off the top of my head, so I may not get it exactly right), is this one.

Tel Trevura (30)
Determination (1)
Greedo (1)
Salvaged Astromech (2)
Feedback Array (2)
Hull Upgrade (3)
Punishing One (12)

The Greedo, Salvaged Astromech, Determination combo is just genius. Pure genius.

I agree on EI over hull upgrade (though I'm actually planning on trying the same build I've been using for Tel on dengar instead, since i've only had his ability trigger once so far). I'm still using R5-P8 though. Makes him a nightmare for soontir. A 2 agility 9 (10 with tel's ability) health ship that can regen shields and has a 50% chance of dealing unblockable damage to you if you shoot at him.

Greedo+Determination is very fun, but it can easily backfire. I don't like to put greedo on ships I've invested a good amount of points into. Mandalorian Mercenary with the determined greedo combo is a cheaper option, and still very fun. If only you could put greedo on Leebo... Only in my dreams

Personally I feel Gonk is a overrated card, it's good for turns when your not exposed to danger in the sense that it will let you bank "evades", to use later, but unlike a focus it can't deal with more then one evade or amplify an attack. Rather each action produces 0.5 of an evade token. That kind of means Push the Limit is the only card I can see run along side Gonk, namely to ensure that he does produce a result while preforming actions that forward the state of the game.

I typically thought of going.

Push

-gonk

unhinged

Punishing

Hull

For 51 points, add glitterstim to season for those crazy turns. That being said, I've not had any games to support this analysis.

Yes, but with the salvaged astromech, you are GUARANTEED to remove at the very least, one crit per game, and that's if you get unlucky and don't pull any pilot crits. And with salvaged astromech you can choose which ship crits to take and which to pass on. It's basically acts as integrated astromech does.
