R7-T1 Question

Question in regards to R7-T1 which opens with "Action: Choose an enemy ship at range 1-2..."

If I use my action for R7-T1 and then discover that the INTENDED enemy ship is NOT within range 1-2 (let's say for arguments the enemy ship was just barely outside of range 2) then do I lose my action?

What is there is another valid enemy which is clearly within range 1-2? Let's say there's an enemy right besides me but I clearly am not within it's firing arc and thus would miss out of the "boost" portion of R7-T1.

Its a weird card that has been clarified in the FAQ, don't remember the interpretation, though.

No, it is like target lock. If your selected target is out of range you may select a different target or pick a different action entirely.

Additionally it is possible, and technically not against the rules, to purposefully select a target that is outside of range 2 to check range. People who do so are considered what some people call an ass hole. The kids tell me that isn't a good thing.

Incorrect. If you aren't in range 1-2 arc of the chosen ship, you don't get the TL on them. But you may still boost. Either way, your action is used.

My interpretation of the card is that only once you've satisfied the first two conditions (in enemy's arc and at range 1-2) can you then continue with the action. Otherwise, it's treated like a barrel roll or boost into an invalid area - the action is cancelled and you may choose a different, legal action.

Note that once you've satisfied those two conditions, you're not required to use them, per the FAQ - "If a ship equipped with R7-T1 is at Range 1–2 and inside the firing arc of an enemy ship, the following sequence occurs: the ship equipped with R7-T1 may acquire a target lock on the enemy ship. Then, the ship equipped with R7-T1 may perform a free boost action, even if it did not acquire a target lock on the enemy ship."

Does that make sense?

I would argue that this isn't correct. R7-T1 is the action - the affect is the TL and Boost. This particular action requires a specific setup (like a regular barrel roll or boost), meaning that if you can't fulfill the requirements, you can't perform the action and thus have to choose another action.
