I disagree. While certainly neither are necessary, both have more then enough natural synergy and resilience through defense tokens to justify their cost. Additionally, their scatter token makes them practically immune to capital ship anti squadron fire allowing them to contribute as late game anti ship (for what its worth) in a way that generics may be loathe to do depending on their health. Yes, you are oaying through the nose, but you pretty much always win the squadron fight. Actually, if I was going to drop anyone it would be vader.
