I was at the tournament yesterday. I felt like the tournament was just poorly ran. It was there first time at this store and it was very disorganized at the start. We didn't actually start playing till almost noon. There were about 30 min gaps between rounds and then about an hour ish lunch tie. I feel if they were strict on formatting, planned, and organized. That tournament Swiss should have ended around 8 then give time.for the top 8 cut which is a separate tournament in itself.all in all it did feel more like a regional than a store championship but the issue was management not the game. In my humble opinion.
Who thinks X Wing Tournaments are way too long?
I'm less annoyed with length -- for big events, you'll have more rounds -- than start times and readiness to run the tournament.
Yeah, I'm behind this. I'm a little frustrated when a little of tournaments start at noon. I do wish stuff would start a little earlier.
I really think 6 games should be the max in one day of play.
After 6 games I am tired, but will still feel I have had a hard and fun day. Any game after the sixt in one day will just be tedious for me.
5 rounds here, + untimed final = started at 10am, and was home close to midnight. (30 mins drive...)
GG.
My 9 year old boy and 11 year old girl just did a 6 game Store Champs (she went 2-4 and he went 3-3!!!). And this wasn't a small town event. It was LA and had several top players from Worlds competing. If they can power through and be willing and able to play top 8 (if and when they get to that level) then the rest of us need to suck it up and man up.
The 75 minute time was established because 60 minutes allowed to many wins via slow playing your opponent. Don't like it? Blame the poor sportsmanship of someone who takes 5 minutes to set his single YT-1300 dial. The number of rounds are due to the number of people now playing (a victim of their success?).
45 minutes between round for setup??? we don't even take that much time for a lunch break.
Ultimately, if you don't like the length of time to get a tourney done, either run it yourself or don't go.
I played with your daughter in round 6, although I was tired by that point, I had more fun playing with her than I did with several "grown ups" I played before. she understands it's a game and it's meant to be fun. I met some players who seem to believe you're out to cheat them out of their deserved win, although I have to say most x-wing players are a friendly bunch.
I do think tournaments are a little long, and if I made it to the top 8 I'd be both happy and kinda wanting to go home. I'd probably wish that the top 8 would play the next day.
I think 60 min would probably be too short, unless you cap the time to set dials. I'd probably be happy to reduce breaks between rounds.
perhaps a smaller number of rounds would also work

I agree, after 6 games you also are not getting the best of anyone. Also 4 rounds of Swiss cut a top 4 seems reasonable.
I still think a game takes too long for competitive play, even 60 minutes rounds feels too much. I dont mind playing 6 rounds of swiss when there is enough people but i think the game should shift to a faster pace to allow matches to finish in 45 minutes.
Perhaps a shakeup in total points would help! FOW changes their points totals each year for tournament play. Maybe XWing could do the same thing such as having a season point total drop to as low as 60 with a minimum of two ships required!
That would change things up and probably allow for tourneys with 45 minute rounds. Any number could be used as well...try building a list with a maximum of 73 pts! ![]()

Then you need a different game.
Starting a tad bit late was my fault as I tried to get a jump based on early turnout via folks saying they would be there by other means in addition to fatigue from work on the previous night as I work 7p to 7a (plus verification as well, was my first event as a T.O. that large.) Most of the matches were finished within the 35-50 min mark with some of the top ringers going to time. The breaks between rounds were never longer than 10 mins as I set that timer as soon as the round ended. With the exception of the lunch break which was set at 1 hour.
The round format was per FFG guide as I wanted to run it as close as possible to recommended guidelines, in the future based on player attendance and time of start it will be 5 rounds or less. Glad you were able to make the event and hope you enjoy the prizes won.

There were not 30 minutes between rounds, after each round he gave players a 10 minute break, then with pairings and people setting up it took about another 10 minutes, some of the delay was waiting for players to set up.

4 rounds with that many players does not give you a defined cut, you would have a lot of 4-0 players.
What the OP did not tell you is that the store gave out $400 in store credit and a custom made trophy, much better prize support the any of the other store championships in Florida
60 minute rounds were absolutely unthinkable pre much needed mov change
probably still unthinkable, considering games still tend to go to time with all these hard to kill small ships running around
Just played in a SC, came in second place before the cut, losing only to the eventual first place winner by one point.
After the cut to top four, I played the eventual second place winner, and j lose by one point.
Were the rounds fifteen minutes longer I'd have easily won both of those games.
last year people would kill 1 ship and slow play for 45 minutes, at one store championship a player took 2 minutes doing a barrel roll

One solution might be for stores to run more events with capped participation, but I don't know how the logistics would work for FFG.
The 35-50 min. game I think you find would be the average for most tournaments. I think FFG needs to change their guidelines.
if all players were local, I think a similar system as of now but split into multiple days would be good. for example 3-4 rounds one day and 3-4 rounds another day. but some players drive 1-2 h to get to a tournament so I guess they might not like it?
not everyone can free up 2 days for a tournament
4 rounds of Swiss & cut to the top four, or 5-6 rounds of Swiss with no cut is more than enough for a single day of play. If that means you need to cap numbers for an event, so be it.
At the end of the day store event should be fun AND accessible. Less is more - smaller events more frequently, or large events over two days.

This is freaking insane. If you don't like the length of the game, find another game. The gameplay for this game is not designed to be this quick. I mean, hell, problems arise when you only do 60 minutes. The game is designed and balanced for 100 pts. And those games deserve the 75 minute game time.
Me!
I have no solutions, however.
We played a total of 6 rounds for 20 players, as per the guidelines. Took over 10 hours. We had a clear 1st-3rd place after the Swiss (due to a draw). Our eventual winner went 6-0, so was 4-0 after Swiss. That type of event makes you really wonder why the cut to top 4 was needed at all.

Every at the tournament yesterday there were normally a few games that went to time. Especially since TLT lists kill you with a 1000 paper cuts

Then it isn't meant to be large number of player tournament game. Cap it..have preliminary tourneys...but you can't expect human beings to play for 12-17 hours straight.
