Autothrusters

By Gehad, in X-Wing Rules Questions

i want to get a clarification on this card and how the range is calculated.

i am seeing this on the wikia

I think it applies to a very rare case. It says if you attack with a turret, that you should measure the shortest distance first, so corner to corner, and use that range. If that is for example 2, then you check if the enemy is inside the firing arc. Now it COULD be, that the part of the ship that is inside the firing arc is at range 3 instead of 2. For a normal attack where you can only fire in your arc, that means that you will have range 3 on that attack instead of 2

if some one could help me out that would be apreasheated.

There are two range measurements in the game: the first is the range of the attack, and the second is the distance between two ships. Usually, they're the same.

But there's an important corner case that can come up for ships that attack inside their firing arc (that is, ships that aren't attacking with turrets). Because the range of an attack for those ships is always measured inside the firing arc, it's possible for the closest point of the defender to lie outside the attacker's firing arc. In rare cases, that can mean that the range of the attack (measured inside the firing arc) is longer than the distance between the two ships (which is measured from closest point to closest point, it irrespective of firing arcs).

The key observation is that, according to a recent customer support email from one of the developers, Autothrusters depends on the distance between ships--not on the range of the attack. So in that rare corner case, you can have an attack at Range 3 against a ship that's at Range 2 from you, and in that case Autothrusters doesn't trigger.

The takeaway is that the entire ship has to be beyond range 2 if any part is inside a firing arc. Even if it is just a tiny corner.

If no part of the ship is in a firing arc, then the range no longer matters.

Just a reminder to all that may read this, turrets are not a 360 degree fire arc. The fire arc is always what is printed on the cardboard ship base, turrets allow you to shoot outside of it.
