Price Check: StarViper Pilots

Continuing our series where we re-evaluate the points costs of cards in the current meta, one card category at a time. Just copy the list and insert your own point values.

If you find a card on the list that you have never been interested in taking in competition because it seems too inefficient or too situational, consider the point value that would convince you to try it in a competitive squad and write in that value.

While I approved enough of the upgrade ones, in which certain cards can be wildly different in relative value, most ships have problems that are universally off, or much deeper problems than mere price tags (Scyk, fel's wrath).

So for ships, this series feels vastly less helpful to discuss. And there's enough that it really starts feeling a little spammy.

Yeah. The ship desperately needs some way to reliably gain an evade token. I think even with that it would be costed fine as-is.

Nobody's claiming that changing the cards costs is completely fixing the ship, a point cost can be changed and the ship can still require a buff or upgrade slot or mauever, etc.

I personally don't find anything wrong with these threads, better than just asking for wave 8 to get here.

We can only hope for a proper fix. In the meantime, I agree with MegaSilver that a 2 point price cut across the board would bring Vipers down to where they need to be.

Some will retort that Guri and Xizor should stay at their same price, or only receive a 1 point price cut. To which I reply: what exactly is a 30 point Guri paying for compared to a 23pt Black Sun Enforcer? How much do you value PS5... 1 or 2 points? How much do you value the Elite slot... 1 or 2 points? How much do you value Guri's Pilot Ability... 1 or 2 points? Even an optimistic assessment of her value would still result in a discount.

I've flown guri with mindlink and manaroo (with recon specialist). It's pretty disgusting. She'd be soontir levels of tankiness if she had the evade action (which I REALLY wish she did)

Out of all my flight time I had with her, yeah... She truly is a gem in the dredges of scum.

Every point I have spent on Guri has been so worth it and has given me back more then the price I paid for her

the others however should be 1 PS higher I like Guri at PS 5 but would not complain if she was PS 6 and the Title should not be unique (don't care if this goes against fluf) I could then live with the 1 point cost

Quite honestly, this right here I see as more of a fix then decreasing cost. If they all had a bit more PS and the title could be equiped to the multiple generics, we would be talking.

If we were not getting Boba Crew Buzz droids could have done the same thing and been for Starvipers only

Illicit would be grate but I don't think they will give it a title like that

the other problem giving it an evade token wont really help (unless its Guri at range 1) focus is always the better option and you can only get the focus+evade with Push and sadly the Starviper does not have enough green to clear the sterss

honestly, virago should have done something completely different (maybe an evade condition) and the ship should have come standard with system and illicit slots. With that and a 2 point price cut, we would've had a far more interesting ship than just guri/xizor and one of the more interesting dials in the game

I love the viper, and I wish I had reason to take more of it

We were talking about this at my LGS the other week. The one solution I like the best was either a title/modification gives you a free evade token when you perform either a barrel roll or boost action (0-1 point). Rewards you for fancy flying with the ever sought after evade that the Vipers need.

My favorite build is a viper with the title, advanced sensors, and PTL. Love the PTL and advanced sensor dynamic, nothing like 2 free actions even if you are going to bump, or avoid the bump with a boost/barrel roll before you reveal. Anyway a mod like this would compliment my build for vipers big time but I think would also help the majority.

I love the Starviper, and Guri has been a ton of fun to play. But I completely agree with the comments about cost reduction and access to evade. In our latest episode of Stay on Target podcast, I offered a potential upgrade card like Chaardan Refit for A-Wings... A torpedo spot card with a negative 3 point cost. Could be a bit of a band-aid, but there's another thing nobody seems to have mentioned yet: The dial needs more green. That 3 S-loop is so good, but you're fairly predictable coming out of it. I really wish they could make it more like an arc-dodger and make at least one set of the hard turns green. They made the Tie-Adv-Proto hard 1 turns green... I don't think it's out of the question to do the same with the Starviper. That would make PTL Guri a little more dangerous.

I have noticed that X-wing has kept to a specific time zone of the Starwars universe. The Galactic Civil War in this time the only organisation or group that was using them was the Zan Consortium. Buzz droids where used during the clone wars by the Sepratists and Trade Federation to Sabertage and immobilise enemy ships so they could either be salvaged or melted down to build more droids. Saying that I believe that buzz droids should be an illicit upgrade! I would deploy them as a bomb template would be. But I would give it a number of tokens (about 3 would work) each token representing a buzz droid roll an attack dice for each token on a Hit result transfer the token to the ship.

Action: discard an upgrade card or remove an option from your ability bar. Remove one buzz droid token.

At the end of turn roll an attack dice on a Focus flip a damage card face up. On a hit deal one damage. On a critical deal a face down damage card.

Native AT. That I all they need to get them in line points-wise, and it is constant with what I am able to find out about the ship in the interverse.

I agree that the generics are a tad over priced. I don't think Xizor is. I haven't flown with Guri before to really know.

For the cost, they have poor action economy. That is hard to fix without going with the title and a systems upgrade. The problem is that makes them even more expensive, and the title is unique. Xizor simply has to have it. Guri is OK without it, but for 30 points, I ought to get more than PS 5 when compared to Rebels or Imperial at that pricepoint.

We really need an "aces" or "vets" pack for S&V the small ships just aren't where they need to be right now overall. No major overhauls they are close but we really need a lil boost here.

I agree with most here that the generics are 2 points too expensive. I'd like to run 4 SV w/ ATs.

I think Guri and Xizor are really both underestimated but I'd drop them both a point so that with title they are essentially the same price point. I love Guri + Predator. She can simply shred PS 1-2 generics with disgusting efficiency. Unfortunately, she struggles against anyone who can out PS her.
