Every Tank has it's Day?

By CheapCreep, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

2 Banthas. It's terrifying, it's terrible. It's a real force to be dealt with, having the ability to move an inane amount of time with Tamer on the board, stomp you when it's stuck in one spot, or just out right shoot you! I've had Banthas run down an entire elite squad of Stormies.

They are cleaning up pretty well with the Trooper lists out there who rely on numbers and cumpling, which the Bantha loves to walk all over. Figures like Leia help you bring double damage on the Bantha to make it pay for it's transgressions, but is it enough?

The way to deal with it could be Stun, making the Bantha lose 1 movement or not being able to activate at the end of a round to stomp you again.

It could be Cripple, an adjacent action that keeps the Bantha in it's place for the entire round (Though very, very situational.)

Could it however be a very valid and devastation strategy to bring out the Repulser tank? A figure that was glosses over but not that bad for it's 10 points! It can move with ease, it can roll 3 solid dice with good surge options, equipped with Targetting computer, it can make sure your shots count.

With Focus Fire, the Bantha will be hurting, taking upwards of 14 damage in a single turn!
If you're brave enough to bring Sorin with it, you can focus fire, Focus or stun the Bantha, continue with a stronger attack. THEN use Sorin to command the Tank to attack again, possibly killing the Bantha in one round of devastating damage. I've done it, and I think you can too!

I like the strategy. As this game develops, I hope we continue to see forces that can counter each other in various ways. That would negate the one meta to rule them all.

Nice idea! But I think that an Elite Officer is a better choice than Sorin, unfortunately. Your post inspired me to see what I could do with the Tank, so here's what I just threw together now:

Played against a couple of dual bantha lists today. I found a really effective counter to them is a single bantha. If you can trap their second bantha behind the first (since massive figures can't overrun each other) and just pour fire into the first it works pretty well.

So your great inspiration was to stack focus broken stormtrooper spam... minus 1 WHOLE SQUAD for the tank... its GENIUS.. why hasnt ANYONE thought of that before?!

Oh yeah... endless broken stormtrooper focus token spam.

/sarcasm off

Weiss is also a strong counter to an enemy Bantha. He's a brick wall, and he hits like a...AT-ST! :)

Yeah, the problem, I think, is not in finding something that can counter banthas, it is finding something that can counter banthas AND not get wrecked by everything else.

Nazgul we noticed by your topic that you are pissed because you can't deal with elite stormies but try and keep calm in other people topics.

Wow, and how was your day? :)

2x eStormtrooper doesn't make it a trooper spam. They just happen to be some of the most efficient units in the game right now. And I don't see many people using the eOfficer.

Here's what I got - haven't played it...

I've been cleaning up against Banthas. Only a few people that play them. Yes I usually play Kayn+Troopers but still even for a rebel hero build with focus it should kill a Banthas in four focused hero shots? How do people play Banthas in your areas? And what's this about Troopers clumping?

By "endless focus spam", you mean one single Command Card, that can give one model Focus?

Can you please share what you list is and how do you play with Kayn? I want to learn how to play with troopers but so many people advised against using Kayn.

I think an regular AT-ST will be a better counter to the Bantha than a tank.

It's worse than the tank for killing banthas.... but I think it's better against everything else. So for a competitive list, it's more versatile.
Weiss is better again.

The tank can shoot twice which is good, but can't move when doing so, which makes it harder to block the bantha.

It's got less health and only a single black dice. Not a huge deal against the bantha, but makes it pretty easy to focus down with anything else. The AT-ST takes a lot more effort with 2 black dice and 5 more health.

Not being able to shoot at your feet isn't a huge problem because you can always take a step back and shoot.
An elite officer or Sorin makes the AT-ST even better. That goes for the tank too, but neither of those help it's survivability.

If your looking for just pure damage (without the blocking bonus of being Massive) then the elite E-Web does the job too. Movement shouldn't matter since the bantha will be coming to you. With recover and two attacks, i can actually be harder to kill than the tank unless you one shot it.

If you're going for just raw movement blocking then the bantha is the best unit. Every army can take one (albeit with the Saska tax).

I think the choice between E-web and Tank is situational. But I see the AT-ST being a bit more flexible and tougher overall. Is it worth the extra 4 points (or 6 for weiss?). That's hard to say.
