What was your first squadron?

By MrAndersson, in X-Wing

Like the title says, what did your very first real (100 point) squadron look like?

Why did you go for those particular ships?

Did it play out the way you had intended it to?

Did you continue playing it (with or without alterations) as you evolved as a player?

My first squadron was born out of my love for both the TIE Interceptor and the Firespray. I bought the Slave-1, Imperial aces and Interceptor boxes, and produced this:

Krassis Trelix with Heavy laser cannon

Saber squadron pilot

Alpha squadron pilot

Alpha squadron pilot
I quickly found out that generic Interceptors are not that survivable and changed the list to:
Krassis Trelix with Heavy laser cannon
Soontir Fel with Push the limit
Turr Phennir with Veteran instincts
That worked much better and sparked a year long bromance between me and the Baron. He is the pilot with which I learned to play this game.

I can remember my first tournament list:

Kyle katarn

Opportunist

Blaster turret

Recon spec

Moldy crow

Biggs

R2F2

Stealth device

Dreis

R2D2

Shield upgrade

That's really funny! I ran:

Krassis Trelix with Heavy laser cannon
Mauler Mitheral
Backstabber
"Doom Shuttle"

I loved the HLC, thought it was the strongest upgrade in the game but didn't want to lose out on sweet crits.

Mine was....

YT-1300: · Han Solo (46)

Marksmanship (3)

Gunner (5)

· C-3PO (3)

· Millennium Falcon (1)

X-Wing: Rookie Pilot (21)

X-Wing: Rookie Pilot (21)

I didn't have a lot of ships and I've always loved the Falcon and Han Solo. Eventually swapped the rookies for Corran and made a good run in a couple tournies including a top 16 finish at a regional. Since then I've been more interested in 4+ship builds.

Han and Luke, don't remember all of the upgrades. It's pretty self explanatory when those are all of the ships I owned at the time!

I have no idea for the "first," but the first at a tournament was in January 2016, so I remember it:

IG-B: Push the limit, Advanced Sensors, IG-2000, Mangler, and Seismic charge

IG-C: Push the limit, Advanced Sensors, IG-2000, Heavy laser cannon, and Proximity mine

I actually had planned to swap those mines around, but I mixed it up for my first game and I figured that since we're meant to keep one list throughout, I should keep it as is. It would have brought me closer to the third to last, who was 3 MoV ahead. I got cocky in my one win by deciding not to use a focus on B to defend and keep it for offense. I won, but the half point rule knocked me solidly into my position.

Considering I didn't have fire control systems or autothrusters then, I'm pretty happy with how it went. My plan for most matches was to set up at an angle, boost and 3 forward to set up the alpha strike.

I got killed chasing 3 T-70s around, landed on a few rocks, I think I killed one.

Then I killed a Biggs, Ello, Poe list, with B at half points. I aimed for Biggs and killed him in the second round of firing, Ello made the mistake of parking behind C that turn, the advanced sensors proximity mine came up hit hit crit. And, since this was a move I'd planned, C was doing a Segnor and finished the job itself. Hunting Poe was relatively easy, except for that one hit. C was unscathed.

Then I learned that not having B-wings or not knowing about them is very dangerous. My son was making the calls for B for a while on this game. Alpha striking them did not go well, Keyan and Ten numb hurt. I lost it all though I did get in the way.

The third game was Soontir, Whisper and Scourge. Knowing I was green, I figured I'd go for the kill I knew I could pull off, Scourge. He got away, so I went dancing in a tight cluster, landing on nothing (I learn best under pressure, not through long term practice). As I had measured, dropping a mine and going 2 forward (IIRC) makes the ship following you bump and eat it. Soontir did so. The prox mine got Scourge when I placed it in the middle of the cluster I knew he was going in. I pulled a few nice bumps and got Whisper to 1 health. Then I got a text message my youngest son was in the ER, having split his scalp and waiting for sutures. My wife argued that adding me and the oldest in the waiting room wouldn't help, so just finish and come pick up the middle boy. My head was not in the game, so I ended up losing, but I was still proud of maiming Whisper and Soontir like that. On one turn, I remember thinking of a way to bump Whisper but thinking it wouldn't happen... it totally would have had!

All in all, it went very well, even at 1-3. When I'm bringing the Aggressors again (spring tournament, with the promo IG C seems thematic), they'll have autothrusters though. I'm not sure about the rest.

I feel like an old hat but...

Luke Skywalker w/ R2-D2

Garven Dreis

2xRookie

And

Garven Dreis, R2-D2

Dutch Vander, Ion Cannon Turret

2xRookie

Yay Wave 1 =)

Back in the day when squad building was simple simply because there weren't so many options to go around.

On top of that you may not have had all that many ships to work with.

In many ways I feel sorry for those who are getting into the game today as there are just so many choices on what to do. I do not envy the knowledge of what "correct numbers" of various expansions are when you want a certain number of ships/upgrades of a given type and they happen to be found in multiple sources.

Soontir and a mini-tie swarm, started with insane PS bid with swarm tactics, still run with soontir and Black-crack miniswarm.

Don't run Soontir as much though now because everyone flys him -_-

When I went to my first local tournament, I owned the Core set, Rebel Aces, a HWK-290, and two Z-95s. Phantoms were all the rage (pre-nerf), so my list was designed mostly to defend against Phantoms:

Nera Dantels (35)

B-Wing (26), Fire-Control System (2), Flechette Torpedoes (2), Flechette Torpedoes (2), Swarm Tactics (2), Munitions Failsafe (1)

Roark Garnet (26)

HWK-290 (19), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Jan Ors (2)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12) x 2

Prototype Pilot (15)

A-Wing (17), Chardaan Refit (-2)

It was annoying to Phantoms, but after a couple fo tournaments (including a variation at my first store champs) I learned I'd made the classic blunder of a too-expensive B-wing.

Vanilla TIE swarm. I don't think it even had any aces in it, maybe Mauler, but definitely not Howlrunner. Flew it in the Kessel Run event against another TIE swarm and it had to have been the longest match of my life. 2 red vs. 3 green for an hour. Lost when we went to time and my opponent destroyed one ship in the final round. That was it. One ship killed the whole time.

Wedge

Biggs

2x Rookie Pilot

Luke +R2D2, shield upgrade, Draw Their Fire

Biggs +R2F2, stealth device

Wedge +R2, squad leader

It was a solid list back in the day. Then the phantom menace happened, tempered to try and bring it back in some way.

Krassis Trelix with HLC.

Soontir Fel's with PTL.

Turn Phennir with VI.

I cannot remember which of the 3 was my 'First First' but these were my favorite lists starting out.

All 3 performed quite well at the time. And it's clear that some of these original builds have managed to evolve with decent success in the current Meta.

Imdaar alpha was my first competitive event:

Krassis Trelix — Firespray-31 36

Ion Cannon 3

Ship Total: 39

Academy Pilot — TIE Fighter 12

Ship Total: 12

Academy Pilot — TIE Fighter 12

Ship Total: 12

Darth Vader — TIE Advanced 29

Cluster Missiles 4

Engine Upgrade 4

Ship Total: 37

Wouldn't recommend it. No damage output.

We started around XMas of 2013 and the following list was my Imdaar Alpha build!

33 points

• Luke Skywalker X-Wing

R2-D2 Veteran Instincts

33 points

• Wes Janson X-Wing

R5-P9 Veteran Instincts

34 points

• Wedge Antilles X-Wing

R2 Astromech Shield Upgrade

Academy Pilot x8.

Still my favorite list.

"Leebo" - YT-2400

-Lando Calrissian

-Proton Rockets

-Heavy Laser Cannon

-Lone Wolf

-Outrider

-Counter Measures

Luke Skywalker - X-Wing

-RD-D2

-Proton Torpedoes

-Experimental Interface

-Marksmanship

I... dont know what to say to that list.

Guri in the StarViper flanked by TalonBane Cobra and Black Sun Ace, both with Predators and Glitterstims.

Because that's the ships I had at the time! I do like Guri and Talonbane.

I got in during Christmas of 2012, wave 1 only. I saved all my lists, so here is my first one. And wow is it embarrassing looking back on it.

Biggs Darklighter, R2-F2

Wedge Antilles, R5-D8, Squad Leader

Horton Salm, R2-D2, Proton Torpedoes, Ion Cannon Turret

Ugh... so bad.

As soon as wave 2 hit I switched to my Rebel Swarm list:
2x Prototype A-wing
2x Rookie X-wing
Gold Y-wing with R2 and Ion Turret.

That was a pretty solid list.

My brother got me the base set for my birthday two years back. I'd originally written it off as a Star Wars licence over a game not suited to Star Wars due to the (in my eyes) laughable idea that Wedge or Luke could be killed by random generic spam but once I played it a bit I got over that hurdle (I still think generics could do with a nerf against aces, but I suspect that would make the game less playable even if it did make it more Star Wars). I didn't have VI as the Falcon & Slave 1 were out of print so I played around with about a dozen versions of the Whisper, Vader and filler set-up. Lots if fun in our early days, and the latest iteration is pretty sweet too.

My first "real" squad was probably my first tournament squad at 2014 Regionals and later in Nordic Nationals 2014

Echo w/ VI, Recon Specialist, ACD, FCS
Howlrunner w/ Swarm Tactics, Hull Upgrade
Academy Pilot
Academy Pilot
Academy Pilot

99p

Won Regionals with this and barely missed cut at nationals. Echo died in the last round of the last game and knocked me out of top cut.

before I knew better

Wedge Antilles (29)
Marksmanship (3)
R2 Astromech (1)

Biggs Darklighter (25)
R2-D2 (4)

Gray Squadron Pilot (20)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)

Proton Torpedoes (4)
R5-D8 (3)
