Has FFG teased what's coming?

By Arowmund, in Star Wars: Armada

So, reading the forums, I've noticed a couple of folks (names slip my mind, sorry) making comments regarding some of the packaging artwork and it showing depictions of vessels not yet released. Myself, I noticed a stubby, triangular prow with twin barrel laser cannons on it that strongly resembled a Vigil class Imperial Corvette I'd seen artwork of.

It's got me wondering if FFG hasn't been revealing hints of what is to come all along.

Thoughts?

Yeah, how'd you miss it?

In all seriousness though, they have in the past released things that had previously been in card art, but there's no formula to it.

I love the artwork-as-tea-leaves theory.

But I really hope the Vigil is not what the portents are indicating. We really already have the Vigil. It's called the Raider.

I remember the discussion in the X-Wing forums a year and a half ago before the Raider was announced. There was quite a heated exchange between people who knew that the Vigil was a certainly, and those who didn't, a few of whom advocated for the Lancer, and others who said that epic was a loss and the Transport and CR90 were the end of it. (I was on the pro-Lancer side of that argument.) Clearly, we were all wrong - but the nature of that debate leaves me with some upchuck in my mouth every time the Vigil is mentioned.

(And the same is true of people about the Lancer and its phallic properties.)

Yet for Star Wars Rebellion they show art of the SSD Executor which could possibly mean that we'll see that next (a person can only hope)

Ugh....did I miss something?

The YT-2000 on the Chardaan Refit card is often cited as proof we have this ship coming up in X-Wing. We're still waiting...

A guy I played at the last tournament pointed out a winged MC80 in the alternate raider I card...

There's also GR-75s and a Neb-B2 on the Adar Tallon Card (?) (I believe - its some of the Holographic ships), but you need to look at the Original Artwork to see it

I think the best teases of what is coming can be found on the show Star Wars Rebels.

I do agree with this assessment more than most things...

But spotting the unseen ships in Cards is a lot more positive than most Wave3 Whinings :D

Art on ships has certainly been a good way to identify future things, but it's not always accurate.

Art on cards is more likely a sign of some ship or person who is on FFG's radar. It might exist in another game and not for this game. If they show an SSD that might only mean it exists in the card game or the RPG. They do share art across all of their games. The good thing is that Thrawn is in the card game and this could help make it easier to bring him into Armada at some point.

Agreed 100%. This is definitely a source to watch.

However, I am now wondering, with the canon reboot, if X-Wing and Armada are being held to the same standards? Are they only allowed to produce miniatures that are/have determined to be canon? I ask because if so, then any artwork showing things we haven't seen could be canon as well, regardless of if we ever see a mini of it. :)

A more obscure source for ships being brought in cannon is the mobile game Star Wars: Commander. At release it was announced by Disney it has a special cannon status. The story itself is not considered cannon but everything in the game is considered cannon. So now TIE Defenders and Decimators are officially cannon ships. The yt-2400 is also in this but then the Outrider briefly appears in the special edition of A New Hope and Shadows is considered non-cannon so... who knows what that means. Granted this is the Armada forum so there's very little source material there, I just found it interesting to see some of the X-Wing EU stuff become cannon on the sly.

Dreadnaught can be seen on Slaved Turrets.

Well, knowing how FFG likes to reuse artwork across its multiple product lines, we might see:

From the Card game:
- Thrawn

- Piett

- Tremayne

- Sate Pestage

- Janus Greejatus

- Lieutenant Mithel

- Captain Zed

- Palpatine

- Mara Jade

- The Inquisitor

- Imperial Escort Carrier

- DP20 Corellian Gunship

- Chimaera, Thunderflare, and Stalker ISD Titles (Though Thunderflare artwork has already been used)

- Golan Defense Platforms (Would be an interesting mechanic. Maybe with some new objectives?)

- Executor (Yeah, yeah. Get over it.)

- VT-49 Decimator

- TIE Defenders / Maarek Stele

- TIE Scouts

- Black Squadron TIES / Backstabber

- TIE Phantoms

- Crix Madine

- Judder Page

- Winter

- Airen Cracken

- Kyle Katarn

- Kanan Jarrus

- MC80 Mon Cal Cruiser / Liberty

- MC40a Light Cruiser

- Hobbie, Wes Janson

I know there is dreadnought artwork in one of the RPG books FFG has put out, as well as a bunch of other stuff. Then there's the Gozanti from XWing.

(I like these speculation threads. It reminds me of when we were all sick of waiting for Wave 2 to finally be released. Ah, the good old days)

Well, the ship design (which goes unnamed in the actual film, so may or not canonically be considered specifically the Outrider) is in the film, so even if they say the events of Shadows are garbage (which to a lot of fans they were) they're at least saying the ship class stays.

And any source of noted canon is welcome in my opinion! Also is encouraging to hear that more of the "questionable" designs in X-Wing are canon approved.

If X-Wing and Armada are going to use only canon approved, then it would follow all the artwork should be as well. I'm hopeful this is the case. :D

it's also on the b wing card... Seriously how does no one ever see that

I realize that it isn't from Armada, but it's worth noting that some of the character art for pilots in X-Wing comes from the old Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron book covers. FFG definitely likes to reuse its existing artwork when possible. Anything being used in the other games is a good candidate for future releases, especially at the fighter scale. If that has also appeared in the movies or the current TV series the chances improve substantially.

Looking at the wikipedia entry, Star Wars: Rebels Season 2 ends on March 30th.

Two days later? Friday April 1st, the official start date for Asmodee and FFG's new online distribution policy.

So just after the series gets to its big finale (and probably has some crazy space battle) I see a strong possibility of new ships being announced. Hopefully with a relatively short lead time.

-edit- And I've since learned that FFG will have a strong presence at Adepticon that same April 1st weekend. It seems like a perfect time to announce a slew of new products.-/edit-

My guess based less on the faction specifity but in the change they could bring to gameplay;

Lancer- super anti-fighter

Interdictor- gravity wells (maybe add 2 turns to gameplay)

Gonzanti- but fleet deployment during battle

Gr-75- I felt I had to add a rebel ship. But tncould be a super support ship. Kindof like the hwk in Xwing.
