Opinion on "earning" alternate-art cards?

By stuffedskullcat, in X-Wing

I have a lot of cards. I couldn't tell you where I 'won' them. Also, keep in mind they will be given out as Participation Awards, so 'earning' one often times simply means showing up at the event. Lots of store will have extras, and use them as prizes at small league nights and such. So...yeah, they're not particularly Hard to Get.

Now, the challenge coins that only the winner gets? Those are a bit more special. Considering my odds of never making Top 4, let alone win it all....yeah, I'll be begging friends and/or eBaying me one of those!

I have a couple alt art Push the Limits because I needed more and when I looked them up on eBay I saw them and went, "Might as well get those".

Oh you bet you have to EARN them and if you play me i will want detailed references of the glorious battles you won in order to have recived them!! notarized 3rd party videos are the only credentials i will except!! :P

Does shaky, 8mm Zapruder-footage work? ;)

Zapruder is he the new scum pilot coming out in wave 9??

I gave away 3 alt art soontir fels and both of my alt art c3pos to newer players to help bolster the community

That's great, I've given several promos to newer players as well. It does help to keep newer players interested.

At some of the bigger events I've been to, there's been a bit of a swap meet thing going on where people trade cards, templates, tokens, ect...

Challenge coin is borderline. Just buying one kind of goes against the whole challenge coin thing but I wouldn't really consider it not okay. They're cool and it's understandable.

Meh, as long as you don't go as if you won it yourself, I think they are great collector items. I was really surprised of the quality when I won mine, I thought they would have been cheaper than that.

The medals are cool collector pieces too. I wouldn't wear them in public unless you work at Chotchkie’s though.

What! You mean you don't have to sacrifice a Princess to the X-Wing Gods to get alt-art cards?

I'm sorry miss, you can go now. Big mix-up, all my fault. And do tell that over-dressed fellow by the cave mouth that you were treated respectfully, because you were. I'll not have another mess like last time. I'm only in it for the alt-art cards. Rope burn is a first world problem honey now move along, and take clackety-pants with you. His sword is useless against my thick hide anyways.

I use these as prizes for a casual league instead of tournaments. I would rather grow the community than have everyone focused heavily on competition and drive away new players. For me, competition is reserved for official events, like the 6 store champs we had in town and the returning regional.

Don't sweat how you get it. Enjoy this game of plastic toy spaceships.

I would love to win that medal, so I could just just wore it all the time and listen to the Throne room music 24/7.

Maybe I'm not into the "look" of things enough but I mostly see the Alternative Art cards as just getting extra copies of said card. Sometimes that extra doesn't do any good although sometimes it would be very nice to pick up more copies of certain things that I haven't purchased in large enough numbers.

Alternative Pilots: You still need the base tiles, along with the model and dial, to fly them so they may have limited utility.

Unique Upgrades: Oh goodies, another C-3PO! Too bad I already own the CR-90 and have one but maybe someone else could use it who doesn't want to buy an epic model for just that one card.

Good Upgrades: Did I hear Autothrusters will be coming out as a 'prize'? That's great because who really wants to buy all of the Star Vipers needed to equip all the ships they use with them.

Personally, I'm generally afraid of using tourney-prize stuff I didn't win, for fear that the legit guys would realize I didn't earn them and may take me out behind the game store like a biker gang. Maybe I worry too much, but I really don't like confrontation.

I tried to like this and it wouldn't let me. Thanks for the laugh. That's great. :)
