Tarkin's Raiders

By nermal, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

So, I tried this fleet out last night more as a LoLs idea and it turned out being surprisingly effective. I faced a dual MC80 squadron based fleet with Ackbar. His broadsides could and did one-shot my ships but definitely owned the squadron game. I've been trying for a while to come up with an effective use for Raiders and perhaps this is it.

044 Raider I

005 * Expanded Hangars

006 * Flight Controllers

038 * Tarkin

054 6 Tie Bombers
060 5 Tie Advanced
020 Dengar

-----------------------------------

392 = Total

Missions: Superior Positions, Fleet Ambush, Precision Strike

If anyone has any suggestions to change the fleet build or missions then please chime in.

Do they ALL need flight controllers? Dropping two of those will allow you to take a couple APTs on your raiders. Leaves you with two that are more dedicated to anti-squadron and the others are more dedicated to killing enemy ships.

Other than that my only problem with this fleet is that it uses raiders, which I despise.

I've played 3 more games with this exact list since posting and I think I've found a use for Raiders that I like. I may try dropping 2 flight controllers for APTs as suggested.

I must say I do not like the Fleet Ambush mission. Can anyone suggest a valid replacement or am I stuck with it?

I've had pretty good success with Fire Lanes. Four ships means that if you spread your tokens out you should be able to bank a bunch in the beginning. Contested Outpost isn't great for a bunch of command 1 ships. Hyperspace Assault might be cool if you want to get some bombers close.

See if you can't add a Rhymer to this list just to make those fighters really hurt when they attack.

Here's the latest iteration. I dropped Tarkin for Ozzel. I also rejigged all upgrades to fit another ship in.

005 * Expanded Hangars

020 * Ozzel

I've played a game against a Reikken fleet with lots of named squadrons. I pinned the enemy squadrons and then shot them all down with my squadrons and raiders. It went well .. I saw Vader shoot down Wedge after rolling 6 damage :). The fleet is a lot of fun and I recommend people at least give it a try.

Here is another option.

Missions are Hyperspace Assault, Presicion Strike, and Superior Positions.

044 Raider I

004 * Ordnance Experts

020 * Ozzel

044 Raider I

004 * Ordnance Experts

044 Raider I

044 Raider I

004 * Ordnance Experts

112 7 Aggressors

020 Dengar

OR

021 Darth Vader

012 Tie Advanced

080 5 Aggressors

020 Dengar

Total = 392 or 393

So, go with all Aggressors or try and mix it up a bit? The all Aggressors option needs no squadron activations. However, option 2 gives Dengar better protection but requires some squadron activations to get rolling. Ideas and opinions are welcome.

I had a GREAT time the other day with a few aggressors and a few firesprays, and Dengar. VERY deadly.

After winning two SC, I decided to run Screed with 6 raiders at the last one...didn't get last...lol. It was very intense to fly, dealt a lot of damage (9 from a raider front once), but in the end it would melt around turn 5 and I would be down to just a few raiders at that point. Unfortunately eventually you have to get in and duke it out...and the raiders just don't survive....pulling 3 structural in one game didn't help either. Maybe with Ozzel, as I didn't really need Screed's ability that much, it would have been more agile to run away. I might run it again some day. It was a lot of fun!

From what I've been told, you were looking pretty Brain-Haggard from Running the list at the end of Round Two....

... I salute the brain-space needed to keep maneuvering so many ships all the time, where one mistake is almost certain death...

Would be too much for me.

I played this vs a 4 MC30 Dodonna christmas tree list:

044 Raider I

005 * Expanded Hangars

020 * Ozzel

044 Raider I

005 * Expanded Hangars

006 * Flight Controllers

044 Raider I

005 * Expanded Hangars

044 Raider I

005 * Expanded Hangars

044 Raider I

005 * Expanded Hangars

036 4 Tie Bombers
016 Major Rhymer
036 3 Tie Advanced
021 Darth Vader
020 Dengar

-----------------------------------

400 = Total

Lost in the end mainly due to 2 Raiders getting just a little to close and being one-shotted off the board. I did drop one MC30 purely with squadron fire but they took a beating ... and my opponent was rolling terribly for flack fire. Still, super fun to play and Ozzel does a great job at keeping the Raiders at a good distance. Rhymer is pretty much a must have. I think I'll try the 3rd list next but with 6 Firesprays or 7 Aggressors ... and Dengar.

I've still been trying and refining the Raider fleet and have gotten several more games in. Below is the latest and most successful iteration.

Missions: Precision Strike, Superior Positions, Fire Lanes

044 Raider I
004 * Ordnance Experts

020 * Admiral Ozzel

044 Raider I
004 * Ordnance Experts

004 * Instigator

044 Raider I
004 * Ordnance Experts

044 Raider I
004 * Ordnance Experts

044 Raider I
004 * Ordnance Experts

072 4 Firesprays

026 Bobba Fett

020 Dengar

016 Major Rhymer

398 = Total

By switching over to Rogue squadrons I've been able to free up the Raiders to plot nav and concentrate fire commands. It also means I can be more aggressive with the Raiders since I don't need them to baby-sit the squadrons. I have to admit I never thought much of the firesprays since you can get 2 tie bombers for the same points ... but in this fleet the firesprays really work out. The things I am wondering about currently is the
Fire Lanes" mission and the "Instigator" title. I chose "Fire Lanes" so that I could have all missions that can yield victory tokens instead of being forced to drop ships for all my points. What can I replace "Insitgator" with? And what other viable option can I use other than Fire Lanes?
