Medals and Commendations from Lead by Example

By OggDude, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Thought I'd start a thread about the medals, commendations, and campaign ribbons discussed in the back of Lead by Example. I think the idea of handing out awards to Rebellion characters is a great idea, and will probably make most players giddy with geeky excitement. I've already started planning how I'm going to use these.

Unfortunately, FFG, in their infinite wisdom, decided not to include any artwork for the awards. So... I say we design them ourselves! I did a Google search and found a few of them, but not that many, and most were quite low in resolution.

To start, here's my interpretation of the Redbird Badge (the Rebel equivalent to the Purple Heart). It also includes a ribbon for your ribbon rack:

This would probably be given out to any character that suffered a Critical Injury during any official Rebellion operation.

According to Rules of Engagement: Rebel SpecForce Handbook for WEG SW, it is a small pin that is red in the shape of the Alliance Starbird.

Wookieepedia has a great category section for them.

Oggdude that's a great idea. And also a great drawing for the redbird. Keep up the good work!

I based the design on the description in Lead by Example. We could add to what's in the book using Wookieepedia. Can't have too many medals :)

Here's one that's not in the book (or anywhere). Since they listed campaign medals for Yavin, Endor, and Hoth, I figured we needed one for a campaign that characters had a better chance of actually being involved in: Onslaught at Arda I !!

The Defense of Arda medal can be awarded to anyone who helped defend the Arda I base during the Imperial attack in Episode I of the adventure module (The Battle of the Gauntlet). The flying crest at the top represents the Doran'enok, which is native to Arda, while the gauntleted fist is for the Gauntlet, the rift canyon where the base was located.

Ahh my bad. :) Your awards do look very nice.

Wookiepdia has some information on the awards, mostly images from the videogames I suspect. I've stolen from them a bit for my campaign.

When the crew managed to stop the Empire's plot against the Alliance Intel vessel Shadow Raptor in the starting adventure that comes with the GM screen I awarded them the Badge of Merit.

When they indirectly managed to save Mon Mothma from being kidnapped by pirates I awarded them the Star of Alderaan and when they followed the conspiracy to Mon Calamari and uncovered a plot to kill Admiral Akbar I added the Coral Cluster to their medals.

When the conspiracy turned out to be a power grab by dissatisfied Quarren and the crew put an end to their evil plans King Le'char awarded each of them with a Mon Cala Coral Pike. I don't like the idea that he's dead so I wrote in that everyone thought he died during the invasion of Mon Cala but Admiral Akbar's daughter, a member of planetary security and my creation as a possible love interest for the Mon Calamari on the crew, hid him from the Empire until Mon Cala was free again. Also I had Admiral Akbar (who has become their benefactor and they are his personal troubleshooters) give them their own ship. A 4R3 called "Peacemaker" that was liberated from the same pirates who tried to kidnap Mon Mothma.

Medals for destroying a secret laboratory experimenting on a tailor made virus and medicine to keep it's symptoms at bay meant to enslave the wookies and eventually every non-human species have yet to catch up with them. I'm thinking of some award from the government in exile of Kashyyyk, perhaps a disk of a Kashyyyk hardwood with a clenched wookie fist carved on its face. Needs a name... Maybe it loosely translates as "The Fist of Resistance" or something like that. Hmm.. Need to get on that.

When they wrapped up the problem the Polis Massan had with the Phantom TIEs and spearheaded the boarding and taking of the Mephitis (from the "Stay on Target" adventure seed) I awarded them the Silver Sphere, a small silver globe with the continents and seas of the birth world of the Polis Massan engraved on it. I thought it sounded like a cool idea. I wont try to do the artwork for any of them, I can't draw to save my life.

What is next for the crew of the Peacemaker? I can't say as at least one of the players is on this forum and I want it to be a surprise. However I can say the name of the adventure is "Something's Fishy" and the three phases of it are titled Hook, Line and Sinker. Bwahahahaha! Behold! Mine is an EVIL laugh!

If you haven't seen Deadpool yet and plan to do so don't read any further as this may be a spoiler....

I'm serious. Scroll down further.....

Keep Scrolling.....

Don't look! You have been warned!

Danger! Spoiler ahead!!!

Ok. Now that we've gotten that dealt with. The spoiler!!!

I see that upraised fist and I think of the scene where he cuts his hand off to escape from Colossus and when we see the hand it's of course flipping us off. If I gave that medal to my players I can think of two of them who would draw in the upraised middle finger and insist that their characters modified their medals in the same way.

Wow, your guys are going to have more bling on their dress blues than a banana republic dictator :) Did you design any of these? If you did, can we take a look? ;)

Here's the Illudium Star:

Looks really good. Btw i thinkt it would be nice if you added what someone has to do to get each award.

That'ts all covered in Lead By Example.

I know, but i don't have it. That's why i'm asking for the fluff.

it's a distinguished service medal. The basic hierarchy of these is:

  1. Kalidor Crescent - Highest award. Equivalent of the Medal of Honor
  2. Corellian Cross - Extraordinary heroic action at the risk of life
  3. Illudium Star - Above and beyond the call of duty
  4. Mantooine Medallion - Exceptional bravery in the face of an enemy force
  5. Star of Alderaan - Conspicuous bravery during combat operations

I'm giving my guys the Star of Alderaan for their rescue of Setenna Hase from Onslaught at Arda I. Anything above that, they'll need to work for it :)

I liked how this one turned out. I also got to learn how to use bump maps in GIMP :)

As a matter of fact, yes, I do have too much time on my hands :)

The geometry of the new republic cross ( http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Bendu ) would fit better IMO. The T was never a symbol in star wars that I seen.

It was how it was described in the book, plus a Google search revealed a few other renditions that were very similar (but also very low resolution). In fact, I designed this one specifically because the low res versions I found on the web just didn't print very well, and looked really grainy and pixelated.

Well, no hard feelings towards you, more towards unimaginative artists.

Hey Oggdude! I really appreciate your work with these medals. Have you done more work about this? I believe it is missing the Kallidor Crescent and the Mantooine Medallion. In addition I was wondering if anyone had done any other medals be it made up ones or the ones briefly explained in Lead By Example .

My players have just finished an extended version of Operation Shadowpoint and I was thinking of awarding them with some commendations. I specially need one specifically made for the Onderon campaign.

Thanks in advance.

Then you need to look around some more. The old X-wing PC game had a lot of these medals and awards. You can see the Correlian cross in the middle there.

Oggy did pretty darn well recreating something from that low-res image.... Though I doubt the TSA would let you board a plane with it....

Ah the good old days of iMuse and copy protection passwords hidden in printed manuals. I still remember hiding the disks for that game so I could reinstall and play even when I was grounded.

You're either a veteran, or know some... nobody says "To all who sees these presents, greetings" without having heard it before ad nauseum.
