When is the right time to introduce Star Wars to the kids?

By Conandoodle, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I was around five years old when I received a phone call from a friend from my preschool telling me I should go see (the original) Star Wars. As he was also five, the call lasted maybe all of two minutes. Ha.

My parents thought it was adorable and took me to see the film that weekend.

A few days before that amazing event, while at a department store with my dad, I was allowed to pick out a Star Wars figure. I chose C-3PO because, hey, he was bright and shiny with a cool circle-design on his chest ... and I was just sure he also flew around and shot laser beams out of his arms.

Well, C-3PO might have been a disappointment, but the movie was mind-blowing!

Shortly after that, I started receiving a bunch of SW toys and comic books. Oh, how I ADORED those Marvel comics... The mom still talks about how she could get me to stay still (and quiet) by dumping a bunch of new comics on the floor.

And while I don't have any kids of my own yet? I made **** sure to introduce my niece to Star Wars as soon as she could look at a TV. She's just about to turn 13, and we had the pleasure of seeing The Force Awakens over the summer - her first Star Wars movie theater experience. Good times.

There is a great line of little golden books of the movies. I bought them for my daughter and they are some of the most requested bedtime stories. I'm so proud!

My dad had a bunch of Dr. Who novel(isations) and he read them to me as bedtime stories.

I got read dune.

What I've done with my kids is not to PUSH it on them. Rather, they know it's something that I love, and they get excited on my behalf. I watch Star Wars Rebels on Wednesday nights, and my 6 year old often stays up and peeks through the doorway to watch a little bit of it. I know he's doing it but I pretend like I don't.

Parenting skills, FTW.

I introduced my kid to Iron Man right after he was born, and now he is loves super heros. Should have done the same with Star Wars. He has a slight "like" for it since its outer space and all. Just not a love for it like I do. He did however pick out a light saber to buy with is birthday money last year, thoughts because it was a cool light up sword.

On a cool note. We went to Disney world last October. After we came back he still had some money to spend on a Disney gift card so my wife took him to the Disney store to spend it. He bought a bunch of stuff, but one thing he bought was a Slave 1 for me, because he knew I liked Star Wars. He had two choices, the Tie Fighter or the Slave 1. He picked the Slave 1 because "it was bigger".
