When is the right time to introduce Star Wars to the kids?

Is 5 days too early?

Serious question though. When did/will you introduce SW to the kids? How will you go about doing it? Rebels/ Clone Wars first then move up the movies? Introduce it through the toys and other merch? I'm interested to your your tales and ideas.

Play the soundtrack while they are still in the womb. :D

I remember being extremely young playing Rebel Assault 2.

I think I was 4 or 5 when I got my first SW action figures (Vader, Imperial guard, Logray, AT-ST) And some time after I saw ROTJ on VHS. (Yeah I watched the out of order, bite me! :) )

When I get kids I prolly show them the toys first? Or maybe the movies, I have the proper (ie Han shoots first) OT versions on DVD after all.

Lego Star Wars?

Or maybe I'll just tell them bedtime stories about Luke and Vader and pretend I'm making it all up... untill they get old enough and watch the movies and go : "Daaaaad!" :D

According to mom I was around 9 when I first got introduced.

Oh geez ...

.. I read that as "I was around 9 when I first got induced." I clearly have a baby brain on.

Played the throne room music to mine .. in utero.

I narrated A New Hope as a bedtime story (about 45 minutes) to my son from about the age of two. It still gets requested.

I am the starchild. You will be given a choice of three endings to the new movies, all of them will suck.

You waited five days? It should of been the first thing he saw as he emerged, playing on a tablet strategically placed on the delivery couch!

And you dressed as darth vader in the delivery room.

I don't think I could start with Clone Wars. It's way too "light hearted kiddy cartoon, silly droids, LIGHTSABER BEHEADING", with not much warning in between.

Agreed. The Star Wars movies are not stories that promote healthy father-son relationships. ;)

I bought my son some Star Wars Lego (Millennium Falcon micro fighter) when he was 4. He was instantly hooked and bombarded me with questions - 'What does Chewbacca have for breakfast?', 'Where does Han Solo sleep?' ad infinitum. I let him watch an episode of The Clone Wars when he was 4, but he had nightmares that night so probably too early. I let him watch the films (original 3) when he was five and a half, mainly because I couldn't bear to wait any longer. He enjoyed them, but I had to explain plot points, and skipped a couple of bits I wasn't sure he was ready for. He might have got more out of them if we'd waited longer. Our shared love of Star Wars is a great father/son bonding thingy for the two of us. Sadly my wife isn't interested, I'm hopeful for my younger son.

I was about 2 if I recall, maybe younger.

My kids were about 2 if i recall.

I have foam lightsabres for fighting my kids.

So as the Father of a 6 and 3 year old, (as well as another due next month), I can say that 3 is a possible age to get them introduced.

What I've done with my kids is not to PUSH it on them. Rather, they know it's something that I love, and they get excited on my behalf. I watch Star Wars Rebels on Wednesday nights, and my 6 year old often stays up and peeks through the doorway to watch a little bit of it. I know he's doing it but I pretend like I don't.

Sometimes on a Friday night, when it's almost bed-time, I'll tell the kids they can stay up late tonight since there's no school, and I'll put on a Star Wars film and let them come out and snuggle on the couch with me and we will watch a movie. (Well not an entire film, but at least a full act - kids don't always have the best attention span, especially when they are tired).

Video games are also a REALLY good way to introduce an IP to kids. We have a ton of Disney Infinity stuff and recently got a bunch of the Star Wars sets. I remember my oldest son playing Lego Marvel Superheroes, and learning about all the different characters. This new Lego Star Wars will be a great way to do that as well.

And also, kids love toy lightsabers.

Back in my day we had no toy lightsabers*.

We used flashlights and made the noises ourself. And we liked it! :)

* Actually that's not true: there were toy lightsabers as early as '78. (But I never had those dammit!)

Wiffle bats made the best toy light sabers! But yes, you had to supply your own sound effects.

My son was introduced before he was born. He is 2 months old now. His nursery has lightsaber lights and pop vinyl bobble heads. I have a poster schematic of the Falcon on one wall. Got R2 and C3PO pillows for the crib. I also have a Vader coin bank and multiple stuffed characters. I even have an R2D2 humidifier for the room. So yeah, it's getting "forced" on him.

Saw two kids in the pool the other day with pool noodles. They were orange and red (the noodles, not the kids) and they were having lightsabre duels, deciding who would be who, making the noises and then falling into the water when they got cut. There was even a force choke/push/something which started a dispute.

Made me laugh

"They were orange and red (the noodles, not the kids)" Depends if they had sunscreen lotion on or not ;)

Ah kids at play:

Pre 1977:

Kid 1: "Pew pew! I hit you!"

Kid 2; "Na-uh! You missed!"

Post '77:

Kid 1: "(wheeze) I'm force choking you!"

Kid 2; "Na-uh! You missed!"

Post 1997:

Kid 1: "Pew pew! I shot first!"

Kid 2; "Na-uh! You didn't!"
