FFG Please give us some news about Armada's health

By Goknights12, in Star Wars: Armada

After the latest news, I couldn't give a rat's ass about Armada. A year wait for that turd followed by another 2/3s wait for another bunch of Nick...I'm out. FF lost all my support.

Could even do a decent job I could have done something better in my spare time on the on the toilet.

See you all in the funny papers. admiral out.

Tell you one thing p. If they are interested in really growing the game they need to publish example of how things work. Too many people don't know how the game really works when they play. They get frustrated and don't give it a second try. They expect us to teach them the rules. The game will survive but nipo thanks to their marketing department etc. should have produced a high quality tutorial and a plethora of illustrative examples. Sure a lot of it is in the rule book...one easy to miss line. Good rule books have a way of mentioning the thing a couple of different times in slightly different ways to get the point across. Each card should also have a clear written explaination of how it works with some other cards. I spent several hours getting all the rules straight. Too many people just tuned out while we were trying to learn and never gave it a second chance. You only have once to make a good impression. I own 81 games and this is hands down the worst rule book and resources to rule sever. When beginners aphave to flock to the community for answers you know you messed up.

It's plausible that it would have been a good idea to do this, but different people have different ways in which they best learn a game. I'm a pretty book-learned person, but I still prefer learning a game by playing and having people point out my mistakes as I make them. Then, I'll go and look more closely at the rules. Or, better still, I learn the game along with my community.

But, more importantly, the only place this is getting us is could'a-should'a-would'a. There's no point in griping about how FFG could have done better. We're stuck with the situation as it is, and we should learn how to deal with it.

The best way I know how is to assure learners that everyone is going to make mistakes, and we'll allow reasonable take-backs while they're on the learning curve. Keep it fun, and casual.

Except for the gloating. Because fledgling Rebels need to learn their place, they will be gloated at when I defeat them as the glorious Galactic Empire, especially because their inexperience made it their destiny to be defeated.

If wave 3 gets AdmiralNelson to leave the game, it looks like FFG design staff members just keep outdoing themselves!

for someone that sounds like he is about ready to smash all his ships with a hammer and pee on the pieces he sure is posting in the forums a lot.

There's the door, walk through it if you so must.

In his "Defence"

He posted a bunch.

But went offline 2+ hours ago - a few minutes after that post above.

So he might have gone.

The pull of the prack is too great. He will be back.

I've just now started posting on these fora today, and...

Well, I asked if he would give me all his stuff. Is that a good start?

I saw Dat-NEWS-Todays... and Oh Boy.

Well, I wondered who the FFG Forum Troll would be. My answer has been given.

I may be unpopular on this, but I ***like*** that Armada has only had 2 Waves and the 3rd may be small and careful. Good! I like the game and don't want to see it get turned up on end just so FFG can sell more plastic next quarter and again 6 months after that. Let's enjoy what we have, I already lament that ships like the Victory and TIE fighter squadrons are rarely played after Wave2 brought the ISD and Villians, for example. Quit making a game fun, then killing the fun parts by making them underpowered compared to newer stuff. That's what made me quit X-Wing. I liked (gasp) dogfighting. Flying for arc while avoiding the other guy's shots. Nope, not now. Everyone just flies space cows with 360-degree "I'm guaranteed to hit you at least once, maybe twice, with each ship per round" upgrade cards. X-Wings are nearly worthless since the newer T-70 models released, the list goes on.

If you're gonna do that kind of crap, then take the older ships in on trade that you've made 70% or more obsolete.

So, call me a grumpy old man, but when the ADD kiddies get pissed because they don't hear news and changes every other week or at least half as often for Armada as they do X-wing and others...I say "stfu, that's a GOOD thing, leave a good game alone for now and just play." Why is everyone unhappy unless they're spending money?

In short, some (not all) people seem to buy into a game not so much to play the game and get very good at it, but just to collect stuff and demand more and newer all the time. If they bought into chess, they'd be wanting machine-gun enhanced pawns and turbo-laser bishops because the old version of those pieces were just not good enough any more.

What??? Learn to PLAY chess and get good at it the way it is? No way, I want enhancements so I can short-cut around all the learning stuff...gimme an expansion that I can buy and get an instant edge over those losers who just play the existing game. Gosh, those old-school players are so lame...

Really?

Hear hear BadAsh1.

Such pretension.

Oh yay, we've devolved into generation bashing again. Nevermind AdmiralNelson is a self-described college professor, let's start generalizing about "A.D.D. kiddies." Also nevermind that the best and probably most sober-minded Armada player I've met is 20 years old. It's those damned kiddies!

In other news, I love this release. These flotillas are going to add excellent depth without breaking the bank. That's a win-win.

Yeah lets not fall into that generational trap.

I love the idea of flotillas, tenders and support ships trailing with the fleet. And this is 2 of the 4 (by SKU count) .

Suddenly new combinations, new targets. This means small ships (Raider, Corvettes) have more viability as hunter's of small craft.

But this is my opinion.

Part of the reason that put me off buying more X-wing stuff (not playing) was the rate of releases, I started at the end of wave 2 and tried to buy enough of everything to field any list. Well after a while that became obviously a ridiculous notion. So then it went to one of everything and more if I liked it. But those epic ships were a stretch to far to justify, so after a while I just stopped and concentrated on getting my talisman collection upto date, and then picked up Armada. This time I am going to be much more circumspect on what I purchase, so I dont end up with a bunch of stuff I will never use. I also think that the story aspect of Star wars deserves exploration so its not always about 1v1 straight up battle which is why these releases help. I am enjoying the slower pace of releases to allow me to stock up at a pace that I can afford. All i need to know is that there are people playing a game to be happy.

(pessimist glasses on)

Any game based on miniatures (expensive or otherwise) with a set point cap for organized play should probably be considered on constant life support from day one. Please, hear me out before grabbing those pitch forks and lighting torches.

If you don't continue to release new material for the game, the game is (from FFG's point of income) dead. Play all you like, but this is it and that's all there is. One shot deal. Glass cannon. Pick your phrase, doesn't matter what you call it, 'cause the miniature makers have left the building. The Babylon 5 Fleet Miniatures game comes to mind. Not saying there weren't a myriad number of factors that lead to the sun setting on that game, just using it to illustrate that once the game has lost support, it becomes the step-child of used game bins, craigslist, and ebay.

If the game continues to thrive with active support, that means new miniatures and mechanics. Here we cross paths with Dungeons and Dragons (rip tsr), MtG, and Warhammer. A constant influx of new expansions will certainly make many fans happy and the money will roll in. It will also inevitably lead to the equals of Kara-Tur, SpellJammer, and edition after edition of over priced sourcebooks and miniatures. Some will love them. Many will not.

Worse, if you never raise the point cap but push new miniatures, you risk ending up with ships being forgotten because they just aren't "effective." Rather the way you could have 1 of 3 builds in WoW, but if you wanted to get anywhere, everyone knew what you should be, leaving 2 wasted and relatively unused (rip pick your class at one point or another).

Lastly, the game faces the darkest threat of all, that ever game faces; boredom. Becoming yesterday's game. There almost must be refreshing material added from time to time to fan the passions of players from waning embers back to roaring bonfires of open wallets.

We all know this.

(pessimist glasses off)

While I confess it stings a bit, I like the idea of FFG making the waves smaller, more cost effective ships. It's easier on the pocketbook, easier to get the new ships into your build right away, and keeps the game fresh. What more can you want, really? Affordable, straight to play, new. Thank you FFG. (where's the rest of the wave you stingy-- er---ignore that)

I can't say what FFG is going to do in the future but really, the sky is the limit. We've talked in the forums about minelaying, dedicated carriers, boarding actions, ECM, etc. People have wish-listed the Assassin corvette, Neb B2's, Interdictors, *coughcoughSSDcough* etc.

I think it's very plain the game has a number or avenues to expand and grow, both in ships (many smaller ships to build larger fleets built around 1 or 2 heavy hitters and keep the over all points low and action high) as well as mechanics and depth of play.

I love this game. I'm not as into it as some. I'm certain several of my posts have made it clear my understanding of it is limited to little opportunity to play. So far, you've all been very kind in forgiving my ignorance on aspects of the game I have missed or forgotten; instead taking my thoughts and applying them using your own knowledge of the game and it's workings, and I appreciate that tremendously. Thank you all.

All this rambling is really just to say that this game will always and only be as strong as us, the players. All the rage quitting talk, the price haggling, etc...do you enjoy the game or not? When En passant was introduced to chess in 1490, how many players knocked their boards angrily into the stove, screaming bloody hell that the dratted French had just ruined chess? :)

The game hasn't changed. Tourney rules only matter in tourney and in truth, the game won't be around 6 more weeks if suddenly Tournaments are the only place it's played. ;)

To sum up...never post at 2:30 in the morning when you're suffering insomnia and aren't thinking straight. I apologize for my ramblings. :)

But also!

We all love this game. We love the much of the source material (canon or not), the miniatures, the mechanics, the art. Instead of all the hating, can't we just... well, can't we all just....

...agree to meet on the battlefield and blow the crap out of each other like civilized folks? :D

The other side of the coin is too many waves makes it daunting for new players to enter. I can't imagine getting into x-wing right now as a new timer.

Its certainly stopped me...

I'm still - eventually - intending on picking up a ship or two to strip back to bare plastic and paint from scratch - just to see how long it takes, and thus, how much I should charge for it...

... But getting into it as a player is too **** intimidating for an old bastard like me.

The other side of the coin is too many waves makes it daunting for new players to enter. I can't imagine getting into x-wing right now as a new timer.

Absolutely. Too many waves, too much expense at $20 a ship. My friends have discussed grabbing a core set for a break from Armada but there's just way too much stuff that costs way too much money for me to get into it right now.

-taps fingers together- Well, I'm just getting back into X-wing, partially because of the amount of variety that's around. Again, I was never deep into X-wing in the first place. The notion of collecting has almost everything to do with me getting enough pieces to form a good 'Heroes of the Aturi Cluster' force and replicate a few 'Rebels' scenarios, rather than set up a tournament build.

Always anecdotes, you see.

I have my heart set on a Firespray and a few Headhunters... Purely so I can paint Kath and the Binyare pirates...

I'm not afraid of Checkers.

Hell, I painted them on converted Armada X-Wings after all...

See, that's the hobbyist spirit!

Too many checks on my Bretonnians to actively want to do those again any time soon, but that's what it's about: (well, at least for me) a neat and unique painted flight group with some real character. Get what works and what you'll like to see. All dem dere tourney build folk, dey's just be a-workin' fer the devil!

Got to get through my current Commission...

16 Bases of TIE Fighters... 12 of X-Wings... 4 Each of everything else, AND a Rogues and Villains! :D
