Friday Fights - Smugglers with a Heart of Gold

By Stone37, in X-Wing

Friday Fights!

This week we are pitting the Republic's two smugglers with a heart of gold. By request, we are also starting a second part to this weekly debate; actual list building and table results! So, let's debate who would win in the movies/video games and if these expectations follow them to the X-wing table.

Han Solo - YT- Millennium Falcon

We all know and love this original Star Wars hero. No further introduction is needed. Because everything you've heard about him is true... all of it.

vs.

Dash Rendar - Outrider

Dash Rendar was a Human male smuggler and freelancer. Born into a wealthy Corellian family during the final years of the Galactic Republic, he chose to pursue a career as an officer in the Imperial Navy. When his parents refused to sell their business to Prince Xizor, leader of the Black Sun crime syndicate, the Dark Prince sabotaged a freighter flown by Rendar's older brother, Stanton, killing him. Fleeing to the Outer Rim Territories, Rendar gained a reputation as a hot-shot pilot, smuggler, and mercenary. His success gained him his own ship, the YT-2400 light freighter Outrider, and the services of the Nautolan navigator Eaden Vrill and the Cybot Galactica LE-series repair droid LE-BO2D9.

Following the Battle of Hoth, Rendar was hired by Lando Calrissian to track down Han Solo. He eventually led Calrissian to the Zhar system, but the Rebels were unable to rescue their friend. Following this, Rendar was hired by Princess Leia Organa to watch over Luke Skywalker after a recent attempt on his life. After saving Skywalker from a swoop gang on Tatooine, Rendar accompanied him on a mission to recover the plans to the Empire's second Death Star battlestation.

THE RULES:

  • For the argument who would win only cannon material AND Shadow of the Empire (game and book) may be used.
  • For the game of X-wing argument you must build a 100 point list with the following requirements:
  1. Dash must be equipped with the Outrider title and Leebo. Luke Skywalker also MUST be one of the ships in your list.
  2. Han Solo must be equipped with the Millennium Falcon title and Chewbacca. Second crew slot is limited to ORIGINAL MOVIE TRILOGY characters. At least ONE NAMED UNIQUE A-wings, B-wings, Y-wings, or X-wing (T-65) pilot must be selected to complete Han's 100 point list.
  3. BB-8 is restricted from use and may not be equipped on any ship on either list.

If the fight happened in the movies (video games) who would win and why?

Build your lists, who do you think wins? Then, fly those lists with friends this weekend and report back!

I'll start with my movie prediction. Han is the man. I'm not sure if fighting is what he does best though. He is a smuggler and will run to live to fight another day. The Outrider is more maneuverable and BUILT for combat. If Han did not have the option of running and had to slug it out, I don't think the good old Falcon would have the tools to take on a ship (and a pilot) like Dash.

That being said... Here are my (newly adjusted) lists (and they are the boring ones that we all expect...):

Han Solo (56)

Intimidation (2), Chewbacca (4), C-3PO (3), Millennium Falcon (1)

Wedge Antilles (32)

Targeting Astromech (2), Crack Shot (1), Integrated Astromech (0)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

vs.

Dash Rendar (53)

Push the Limit (3), Heavy Laser Cannon (7), "Leebo" (2), Outrider (5)

Luke Skywalker (35)

R2-D2 (4), Predator (3)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

Here, I think Han has Dash outgunned. Wedge is going to make every shot count and Crack Shot and Targeting Astromech will insure this. Han is going to crank out 1 or 2 evades (or more) a round, which gives him the power to last through the first few rounds. I see Dash going down fast! Luke will be a pain to kill, but without Dash to back him up, he'll eventually fall.

Looks like a fun game. I look forward to playing it (see if it actually goes the way I think it will). What have you come up with?

but BB-8 isn't from the Original Movie Trilogy...

but BB-8 isn't from the Original Movie Trilogy...

He isn't, but I didn't make that a limitation on the named wingmate. Perhaps you bring up a good point...

Adjusting rules (and my list). BB-8 is restricted from all lists.

And what upgrade would you put on Luke? I'm beginning to rethink Predator and swap it out for Lone Wolf. This way I could run him opposite of Dash and force opponents to pick which to target first.

In your description you forgot Dash's terrible fashion sense.

"Stop trying to make shoulder pauldrons happen Dash. It's not coming back!"

The only way i refer to Dash Rendar is "Budget Han Solo."

or "Edgy Han Solo."

or "Han Solo, but not as good."

or "The guy you call when you want Han Solo, but you're not cool enough for Han Solo."

or "The guy who wishes he were Han Solo, but who will never be Han Solo."

It's not even that i really really really like Han Solo, it's that i really really really DONT like Dash Rendar.

Dash -- more like Diet Han Solo. Han Solo Lite.

According to canon, doesn't Han always shoot first?

According to canon, doesn't Han always shoot first?

That's been hotly debated since the dark times of the "Special Editions".
