So you win a store championship, and another planned

By Soontirbeblownup, in X-Wing

Do you

a) try your best to win the next one

b) try out a list you've planned but not had the balls to play before

c) not bother going as won already or

d) fly something fun but a bit pants just for the hell of it to have fun

to me a) seems really selfish to get multiples of prizes and deny someone else the chance to go. thought I'd see what the common opinion is though

You can only get one regional bye. If you already have one and win again, it goes to the runner up.

Given that, do what you want. I already won a challenge coin, which was my goal for the season, so I've been running builds that I think are competitive but not totally top tier. But I wouldn't hold it against anyone if they kept trying with their top-tier lists.

Tournaments are meant to be won, and I honestly want everyone to try their best. I sure as hell wouldn't be satisfied with a prize if my opponents weren't taking it seriously.

In the (frankly unlikely) event of me winning a Store Championship, I'd still attend others but start going for way more experimental lists. And if by some miracle I won two in a row, I'd skip any prizes as I'd have them already. No point in doubling up. :)

A) and let second place get the next BYE as per the rules.

I'd personally go for a fun but still competetive list. Try the build you've always wanted, just make sure it's intriguing enough to hold your attention for 5+ games. Could be a long day of 5 games repeatedly saying "whelp, guess that combo really doesn't work after all." For example I'm going to run 2 IG's with a Binayre if I make a last SC late March.

Definitely (b) for me. Start taking risks as you've got nothing to lose.

I'd go, and try my best, but I'm might bring a list I'm a little less practiced with or that's a little more out of the ordinary, but which I still think can be competitive.

But this hinges on the idea that I would win a store championship which seems unlikely at present :(

I really just want one of the coins, if I can get one of those I'll be happy.

I just fly what I feel like flying anyway, so in the unlikely event I won, I'd just keep doing that.

If you win, can you go to 2 different regionals?

I'm playing in a tournament tomorrow for which I've already won all the prizes, so I'm taking a fun rather than super competitive list. If I get into the prize brackets I'll simply ask to be counted out so others can benefit instead.

There's nothing wrong with A - you can just let the next person in line take the prizes for whatever place you get. I got 1st at my first Store Championship and 2nd last weekend - I didn't end up taking anything home this time since I was just playing for a 2nd plaque and didn't quite get there.

I had considered a mix of B&D - basically pick a less serious list and play at a less serious level, but I decided it felt kind of douchey to intentionally sandbag myself. The more I thought about it the more it felt like I would be doing that as an ego preserving thing - "I lost this time because I wasn't really trying" instead of "I got lucky last time and this time I didn't" or "I guess I'm not that consistent of a player". I don't mean to say that's what you're doing, but I definitely wanted to prove to myself that I can consistently perform well and I don't get many opportunities to play at this competitive of a level so that's the route I went with.

The only reason I play X-Wing is to accrue as many Store Championship plaques as possible so that I can wear them all on a necklace simultaneously in order to intimidate my opponents and attract mates.

Yeah I won my bye 2 weeks ago, so now I'm running bossk and triple Khiraxz for fun. Won our local league with it, so I may accidentally compete anyway.

However, the top dog in our scene has made the top 4 cut at every championship, winning 3 in the process. Selling all the extra winnings on eBay. It's basically a part time job for him.

I'll get back to You after I win a Store Championship (only been playing 4 months.)

If you win, can you go to 2 different regionals?

You can, but you'd only have one BYE to use.

You go again with a different list and try your best to prove that it wasn't a fluke :P

You might feel bad if you win and get prizes that your friends might have gotten if you hadnt beat them, haha.

Also, the best way to get good at anything is to keep doing it. Playing more events means more play time. Making the top cut means even more play time.

The plaques this year are also pretty small, so yoi really NEED 2 to match the plaques from last year :P

I'm c curious, Bossk with K4 & Outlaws Tech?

I'm in the same boat. I decided to run a list that I think could be fun, but still competitive.

b for me, but I don't fault anyone for cleaning up a whole state worth of store champs if they want to.

To the top dog that puts everything on eBay, yes it can be disheartening. However, that person paid for the tournament just the same as everyone else, got the same chances to not win as everyone else. Sucks some days, but you can't hold that against them.

For me, this is the year I'm thinking about something larger than Regionals. This is also the first year I've NOT done a drastically different list in each store champ (last year I played every major archetype). So far I've played in 3, won 1, and have 2 more coming up. In at least one of them I'm going to play the exact same list I won the champ with because I'm trying to tighten up gameplay. I make mistakes, and I need to practice for the long game. The 6 or 7 rounds in one day games. My list includes Kallus, and at the SC I won, I completely forgot him in 2 of the games (not the final!). And when you forget him and you're range 1 of an ace, you REALLY realize how detrimental that mistake was.

So for me its going to be a mix of A and B. And to be honest if I get a 2nd coin it will probably go on eBay to help fund some of wave 8. And maybe even Hoth if I don't need more than I've already preordered of wave 8. I've already sold off the extra 2 rulers I won.

Now, does all of this mean I won't have fun? Hell no! This game is great amounts of fun. Even when losing! Because no matter what happens, I will learn something about either my or my opponent's list, and will take that with me in higher tournaments. Go out and fly casual folks!

Bossk, k4, greedo, calculation.

Green move, target lock, focus to ensure the crit becomes 2 hits, greedo to crack it back to a crit. I've one shotted Poe, wedge, and red squad vet with this set up. The khiraxz just play blocker/soak damage off bossk.

I wanted to start getting a feel for the YV before wave 8 hits because I'm pretty sure it's poised to become a powerhouse scum ship

I asked because my feeling is yeah go ahead and try but if have them already pass them down, it means more fun for everyone.

Doesn't the TO get a set too? ask because ours runs and wins regularly which means at least 2 sets possibly 4 if does 2 events. seems wrong to me

You can use one bye at each
