New to the game

By DarkQc, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi,

I'm new to this game and bought the base game second edition. I have played 2 quests with a friend and also started a campaign that I play solo to get familiar with the rules, monsters and heroes.

So far I really love the game. I want to start painting the heroes and then monsters as well. Tomorrow, I have a chance to go in a store that has many extensions. Since it is far from my home and don't have the time to search all post for recommendations and I'm sorry because I'm sure that there already is ports for this topics. But I would appreciate if I can get some advise before passing to the store.

What would be the best first extension to get, since I even did not played all the quests from the basic game ? I know that there is Lieutenant, Heroes & monsters, or full box extension. Because I'm wondering if it is worth it to get monsters & heroes vs a full extension, there is no big difference in value.

I would really really appreciate any ideas and suggestions for a starter that is in love with the game. From I have read so far, Nekeral seems to be very appreciate. Or if I may ask this question: "If you had to start over and buy the game, what would be the next thing you would get ?

Thanks for helping.

Depends largely on what you're looking for.

Hate tokens? Grab lieutenants

Wanna more monsters and heroes? Grab H&M pack

Wanna better campaign? Grab HoB

Wanna previous 2 things plus more mechanics? Grab small/big box

Also, before you go and buy Heirs of Blood, make sure its not the campaign that came with your base game (they changed the base campaign to HoB recently)

I would start with a big/ or small box. I don't really bother with the lieutenant tokens, especially since I don't have all the other figures painted to this moment. And for 10-14 dollars more than an H&M pack you also get campaigns, new classes etc. in the big/small box expansions.

It really depends on how much you are willing to spend:p

Glad you like the game, DarkQc! Have you asked your friend what aspects of the game he or she likes/dislikes? My suggestion is to buy items that you know your friend will like: that way they stay interested in the game, as much as you are.

If your friend want more heroes, the cheapest way to add heroes is with a hero and monster pack, and the most exciting set of heroes from H&Ms are in Bonds of the Wild. BoW also has a very fun/pesky monster group called kobolds.

If your friend wants more monsters, I would also go with an H&M. To me, the most "classical" set of monsters can be found in Visions of Dawn, which has trolls and ogres. It also has two Warrior-type heroes and one Healer, to balance out Bonds of the Wild if you purchase both (BoW has two Scouts and two Mages).

Thanks, I really appreciate your help !!

I went for Heirs of Blood to have a nice compaign, Forgotton souls to try the game alone or with my daugther and lots of paint !!

Lot's of fun on the table
