Thinking of starting Armada

By Akaga, in Star Wars: Armada Off-Topic

I just got my bonus for last year's work and was thinking of using it to start Armada. I got into X-Wing a few weeks ago and I've always wanted my own Star Destroyer. Couple things holding me back:

1. Any more rumors on future waves of ships? I was a fan of WestEnd Games Star Wars RPG and TIE Fighter back in the day and would love to see more of the ships from those included.

2. Is there any way to use the Nebulon B frigate as an Imperial ship? I don't know about you, but I was under the impression that it was an Imperial ship and the Rebels just stole/captured/bought a lot of them.

3. I usually get to play games over my lunch break, so what points level should I shoot for to get in a 45 minute game?

The Empire is Victorious on All Fronts

1. No rumors, just wish listing and speculation.

2. Not possible.

3. There are alot of variables here. I have played full 400 point games in 30-40 minutes. I have had starter box demos last over an hour.

we are getting a wave 3 and they are working a wave 4 but we dont know when they are coming

2. nebulon-bs are rebel only, if it bugs your just remember the imperials didnt use them in combat much because they suck.... :P

3. 45 minutes is puushing it 1-2 hours is more normal

I would not recommend Armada if your main playing time is 45 minutes. It normally takes 1.5-2.5 hours for a full game (from setup to finish). From what I hear, X-Wing is better suited to a shorter game like that.

Okay, so that's looking like a 'no' for Armada? Thanks for the advice.

Sighhhhhhhhh...You have made your 2nd mistake with aquisitioning Armada...Do nott ponder on if ; be agressive and move...1st mistake was asking what your mind is seeking for a temporary escape ; aquire and enjoy...

My mind can seek all it wants . . . my wallet and wife have to approve, though . . .

Still haven't given up!

Just out of curiosity, what comes in the starter set that is needed to play, but not available in the expansions or on its own?

The Damage Deck.

The Obstacles.
The Objectives.

The Distance/Range Ruler (3rd Party is available though)

The Initiative Token / Round Tokens (Can be something else)

There are other bits and pieces that are in the Starter Box (and Snipafist below has a complete listing). But they are not neccessarily required to play .

The Abbreviated list is required to play a proper game.

Expansions can theoretically get you everything else.

  • Damage deck
  • Obstacles
  • Objective deck
  • Range ruler
  • Luke Skywalker and Howlrunner TIE squadron cardboard squadron chips and cards
  • Grand Moff Tarkin and General Dodonna commander upgrade cards
  • Leia Organa and Wulff Yularen officer upgrade cards
  • Dodonna's Pride, Redemption, and Dominator title upgrade cards

You can find all of these sold individually on eBay, but the total cost is high enough that I wouldn't recommend it.

I was hesitant getting into it. I got into XW more than a year ago and it was a spend-fest getting the right upgrades. Armada, for the most part, does work a little better sticking to one faction. Sure, you'll miss some of the upgrades but you can usually find them on Ebay.

As for the Neb B Imp frigate, if you're playing a friendly game, you can run whatever you want. I've painted a Neb B grey and it ends up facing its twin from time to time but I can't use it in an organized game. Heck, since I lack Rebels in any number, I've often "play tested" my Imp fleets against a mashup Rebel fleet with a couple of captured VSDs.

Everything not available in expansions is available elsewhere online. Ebay has got to know me disturbingly well since I started this game, but it's the most cost effective way to go.
