Are phantoms still competitive?

By At Rest, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I was trying to find a way to make a all around competitive list with a phantom to bring to a store championship and this is what i have come up with, how do you think it will fair?

100/100pt

Ps-8 Echo- Veteran Instincts, Fire Control System, Gunner, Advanced cloaking deice (42pt)

Ps-9 Darth Vader- Swarm Tactics, TIE/x1, Advanced targeting computer, Engine Upgrade (36pt)

Ps-2(9) Tempest Squadron Pilot- TIE/x1, Advanced targeting computer (22pt)

I enjoy Echo's Cloaking, Gunner and FCS just chews threw aces (poe, Fel, Vader), If your going against thick ships (yt-2400, b-wing, Y-wing, Decimator) you can chew threw all there shields in a turn easy letting the ADV crit away.

Vader with swarm tactics makes the tempest a 9 while attacking giving you 8 9 9 or you can make Echo a 9 if need be if you win Initiative letting her cloak before taking shots. I went with two adv over a Fel build because of Swarm Tactics and the shields. Fel is great but Vader is Ps-9 2 actions 3-4 attack dice (2+crit or 3+crit) same as Fel but has an auto crit, and me another ship with same fire power at same Ps making it extremely consistent damage.

The only weakness i have found is Hight pilot skill 360arc ships, (Han, Rear Admiral Chiraneau, Vi Kavil, Horton Salm, miranda Doni) That being said i can punch threw Y wings and K wings fast and TlT can't 1 shot a phantom. Standard 24pt TLT Y-Wing,or any other Ps-2 ships with initiative i can have Tempest shoot after phantom and vader to try and put the auto crit threw.

Any thoughts on how this list will fair, weaknesses, stuff you would change or stuff i have missed. Id appreciate any feedback on how to improve.

I fly something similar:

Whisper (Recon, FCS, ACD, VI)

Vader (Pred, Title, ATC, EU)

Tempest (Title, Accuracy Corrector)

Recon Spec is only slightly weaker than Gunner/ FCS math wise for offense and gives an extra focus for defense. The Accuracy Corrector lets me keep the Tempest at range 3 to act like a pseudo tlt (hit and damage consistency) while still picking up an evade. Vader with Predator has good synergy with ATC to get damage through. Only weakness is tlt swarm and big ships like you mention.

With your list you might consider Accuracy Corrector on the Tempest to fire first and strip tokens/ shields so your other two ships can do work.

It may just be my meta, but with the number of TLT's roaming around my phantoms don't leave home without sensor jammers. Really helps against tlt attacks cause green dice are fickle.

I love Vader very much, and I love Echo for the mental hurdles she puts your opponents through. If I were to run both in a list it would look something like this, I figure.

Vader 29

-veteran instincts 1

-title 0

-atc 1

-Engine upgrade 4

Echo 30

-Acd 4

-Sensor Jammer 4

-VI 1

Omega Leader 21

-Comm Relay 3

-Juke 2

Exactly 100 points.

No bid but with Vader at 11 you don't particularly care. Echo is really survivable and still very killy by nature of 4 attack. Then, Omega Leader, a new favorite of mine, rounds out the list. Three amazing late game threats that all will give your oppnent a head ache.

The combination of gunner and sensor jammer provides a good compromise between survivability and lethality.

My favourite ship in this whole game is infact "Echo", and it's without doubt the ship I've played most with.

I must insist on the following upgrades on Echo:

• Veteran Instincs - PS8 is a must! It's as it is borderline too low, because without cloak you are the highest priority target for your enemy. Most Acebuilds will have a PS8 to a PS11 to fire at you before you get your cloak on. I'll talk more about this later when suggesting Echo's wingmen.

• Advanced Cloaking Device - The natural upgrade to a high PS phantom. 4 green Dice with a focus token is on par with the soontir 35point build as far as avoidance goes. It's also the base on wich makes echo unpredictable.

• Fire Control System - The free TL is the killer of all lists in the game, especially paired with the focus tokens. 4-5 almost guaranteed hits is the best thing in the game! With echo's strange movements you will have a good chance to fire on the same target the following round with some planning.

•Recon Specialist - 2 focuses most of the time is needed for offence, and defence. Now this part is tricky. It's easy to reason that your action economy is so low, and that the 3pt upgrade is wasted when you're not focusing. But this is the skill-part of the build. If you are in an ace's arc, you need to barrelroll out of it, but only if your hitting something when it's your turn to shoot. If you cannot hit a target this round, take the cloak as an action. If you cannot avoid arcs or turrets, then take the focus (perhaps even the evade, but only if you are gonna shoot a TL'ed target back that round), and if you're safe no matter what, take the focus.

This ship demands 2 things of you. 1: Perfect flying. 2: Offencive mentality, you need to kill ships fast!

1: is the fun part

2: needs good partners that help you focus fire.

Partners: really only 1 ship, the decimator.

Why? Because people will find vader, soontir, turr, jax, bombers, tie fighters, doom/palp shuttle, firespray(lol), and even whisper as a lesser target compared to echo. Any ship that has a higher PS than echo will focus on echo because they can shoot Before echo. IF echo is the highest PS on the table, then congratulations and have fun! But most times Echo will be on the same skill or lower than your opponents side. This is negated by a fat tank that is a huge threat. 0 agility, 3 (4) red Dice, and 360 turret is not something you want to leave alone a longer time.

There are 2 variants I've tried to great success.

1: RAC, Predator, Mara Jade, Engine Upgrade. 56 Points. Everything here is needed to battle most lists, and make RAC Incredibly powerful. I will not explain why this is so good, because this is all about Echo.

The last 4 Points (after spending 40 on echo) is well spent on Navigator or Rebel Captive, and that last Point can be spent on the Intelligence Agent. I don't like Ysanne because RAC will die very fast if he gets targeted, with or without Ysanne.

2: Oicunn, with predator only. (45 Points) Ram them! Let them escape. Shoot their backs! Pair this with an Tie F/O (15p) and you have Another excellent blocker!

Be agressive with the Decimator, and let them hammer it to pieces, echo will be done with them Before they are done with your decimator!

And of course focus fire with your list!

UPDATE:

Vader-vi,title,atc,eu

Echo-vi,adv cloak, fcs, agent kallus

Omega leader-juke, comm relay

The combination of gunner and sensor jammer provides a good compromise between survivability and lethality.

Yea and makes for the most expensive combo you can field Phantom with

If you are having trouble against higher PS ships the perhaps try out agent Kallus instead of gunner? Helps out your defense and while you lose the buzzsaw build it does give a decent boost to offense, just don't forget to use it.

Have you thought about a palp shuttle as well? I usually fly palp shuttle + whisper + OL and saw some pretty good success from that
