Newbie questions about familiars...

By tomkat364, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Familiars can perform moves up to their speeds, but cannot perform any other actions that are not specifically listed on their cards. So the Reanimate and Brightblaze have rules allowing attacks, and they have a move value, so that all makes sense.

Skye has a move value, so can fly around the board, but does not attack directly (other than by heroic feat) So no other actions that skye can take, just position in order to trigger the attack buff allowed by the card, correct?

Pico has no move, and no other actions. So all that can be done is to have Pico jump to a search token, allow another hero to get a free search there when adjacent, and trade equipment with another hero once per encounter? No activation for Pico then, I would assume. Do I have that right?

Yes, you are correct about Skye. She can perform one single move action on her activation, and that is all.

And yes, Pico has no activation and has no actions he can perform.

Sounds like you have a solid grasp of the familiar rules.

Thanks. I was dismayed by the hero abilities, especially Challara's because it is a single use and doesn't seem to give her much pizzazz, but I guess the extra attack from Brighblaze gives her a decent enough boost. But still not sure about Ronan... Pico doesn't seem to add too much. Guess I'll have to give him a try.

Pico adds the ability to search easily and quickly. It allows you to have a scout built such that he might want to spend time searching, but still gets lots of gold for the party.

Challara is actually a pretty great mage. The bonus attack and reasonably tough body of Brightblaze is a huge boon, and it scales with the quality of the weapons she gets. She's in my top 5 best mages for sure.

I also really like Pico. This familiar allows you to choose a scout like Bounty Hunter or Wildlander which isn't great for acquiring search tokens and let the familiar pick up the slack so you don't fall behind in treasure.
