The casting has absolutely nothing to do with pleasing/pandering to any one group. Sony hired Paul Feig to do this movie, since Akroyd and Murray were never going to come to terms on an actual third movie. And let's look at what Feig's biggest successes have been. Bridesmaids and Spy. So is there really any shock that he would make a female lead comedy?
I'm not sure anyone is surprised. Mostly just disinterested.

I don't watch trash like that so I didn't have any clue who he was in all honesty.
Both Bridesmaids and Spy were actually pretty funny. I do like Melissa McCarthy.

I'm not expecting Ghostbusters to be groundbreaking. But I expect it to be "dumb comedy". Which is ok if i don't have 3 hours and full alertness to watch something more cerebral.
I am a parent of 2 small kids, work full time, have other hobbies and am on an on call rotation.
Alertness and serious time are two things I just do not have.

The one that cracs me up most is that she's also the voice of Timmy Turner. ;D
