Battlestar Galactica (classic) using FFG Star Wars??

By daddystabz, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

I'm looking to start a campaign soon for classic Battlestar Galactica and I want a good system for it that can handle space opera sci-fi extremely well, especially for the epic space battles. I am thinking that FFG Star Wars could be a great fit. What do you all think?

Would anyone be interested in working on this and converting some of the characters and vehicles?

Am curious to see the results, but as I'm not overly fond of the space combat rules as written in FFGSW, I can think of a couple systems I'd prefer. (Unfortunately, my playerbase has no love of oBSG. Maybe the new new BSG being done now will generate some.)

I have people interested in playing classic BSG online. I just want a system capable of doing it justice.

I haven't run old BSG but I did run a game based on the 2003 remake using the Cortexplus Firefly rpg. I have to agree with aramis on the space combat mechanics in this system. I did have some success with a Stargate conversion but I have stayed away from the spacecraft rules.

I ran a BSG game for 2 years using this book. I see no reason why it can't be adapted to classic BSG.

I have played the Classic Cortex version but I think that Cortexplus is better. It is far more narrative and less clunky than Classic. That said, the Cortex Classic book does have a lot of nice ideas and imagery.

That is the main game I'm leaning toward myself. I am considering using it to run classic BSG. I had considered Retrostar but doesn't quite do what I want for a game such as this.

P.S. I really dig Stargate. Is there a Stargate conversion out there I'm not aware of?

I believe there is but haven't played it myself.

Give the Cortex BSG a try, I played it for 2 years and I really liked it. I would still be playing it now if it wasn't for the Star Wars game I'm running now.

In my signature I have a Stargate conversion. Please try and let me know how it works for you.

Would you be interested in joining forces with us to do some classic BSG using the official RPG? I could really use some help with things since I'm running so many games currently. It would be fun!

Just a heads up that I think the link to the Stargate character sheet is actually linking to the rules.

Sure

I have checked and that was very strange, I have reordered the links and they all seem to work now. Thanks for letting me know.

Edit: I figure I might as well use this post instead of adding a new reply. I have noticed a few minor errors in the Stargate document. It is mainly small grammatical errors but I will take advantage and do some updates given that the original was created using the AOR beta. I will post once it has been completed.

That's like saying Star Trek TOS can be run with only minor adaptation in F&D...

The two have totally different sociodynamic setting issues (IE, the descriptions of the planetary races don't overlap much at all, the societal basis is different), different hardware assumptions (most especially Autocannons versus plasma bolts), and even very different visual looks.

It's really far more different than say, ST:TOS and JJ-Trek.

We have only a handful of references in the footage of oBSG to the cultural differences, but some are notable...

Capricans are essentially Mormons in Space but allowing booze and tobbacco. (Galactica is mostly crewed with Capricans)

Gemonese have a dominant religious sect, the Otori that considers sex taboo except during "worship of the sunstorm" every 7 yahrens. On the other hand, they don't object to gambling at all.

Borelians largely are religious fanatics with a warrior culture, and are insular, violent, and practice blood oaths of vengeance.

All of this is very minor though. With just a few simple tweaks you can easily re-skin the game to work very well with classic BSG. You can leave the character writeups as-is pretty much and import the stats. There was a sourcebook released by fans years back (The Colonial Warbook IIe) that included writeups for some of the classic characters and vehicles, which I intend to import into my game. You can easily though just tweak a few thing on the vehicles and make them work well. The cultural info is available by simply watching the series, which I own on DVD, and by some other internet resources.

I really have everything I need to do this except a few more players.

Any interest out there? I already have the game set up on Roll20 and 2 people have already expressed interest.
