Single Ship Mini Tournament

By Spaceman91, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I may have made a (good) mistake by seeing if my local group were up for this. They liked it so now I have too many choices.

One ship. 40pts maximum

I'm torn as to what to take. So lovely people of FFG forum pick one (please):

Jake Farrell

PtL + VI + Prockets + Autothrusters (title)

Poe

Autothrusters + Predator (Please don't tell me to change this to VI. I hate VI on Poe) + R2-D2

Vader

Prockets + Engine Upgrade + Predator + X1 + Adv Targeting Computer

"The" Fel Build

Or Wild card;

Luke

Predator

R2-D2

Shield Upgrade

I think I like the poe build best.

Jake & Vader, whilst both very good and hard to pin down both suffer from subpar primary attacks. Prockets on Jake kinda fixes this (and may be good as long as you have a small turnout) but at the end of the day it's only one shot against one ship.

Fel is fel, and could very easily carry the day, but I dislike the lack of durability. He lacks poe's staying power - one bad roll could take him straight out of the running.

Luke is good, but poe is just better.

I do have one question though: Why no lone wolf?

It seems a natural choice since it will trigger 100% of the time, and should be way better than predator because I don't think you'll see any PS2 pilots there.

I'm interested in starting one of these 1-ship, free-for-all tournies in my local group, too.

Catch is, I want it with non-unique pilots only, and a 30pt cap.

Seems more interesting if you can picture yourself as the pilot rather than 11 guys running around playing Soontir, Vader and Poe. Just my two cents.

...wait, that was totally off topic. Sorry.

Fly regen Luke with Lone Wolf, R2D2 and Engine Upgrade over Shield Upgrade. For your last 2 pts, you can add a Flechette Torpedo to make PtL users fear your arc.

There are two types of upgrades that reign supreme here: Regeneration, and Anti-Targeting.

So, R2-D2, R5-P9, and Rebel Captive.

40 points is a bit high for a Furball in my experience.

I would honestly go with Whisper + VI + ACD + Rebel Captive, if allowed 40.

Royal Guard with Fel's build. Highest PS generic, and only loses 1 focus per round.

Alternatively, a generic E-Wing with R5-P9. Running away with a 5 forward, and healing at end of round, while your opponents attack each other? Priceless.

It's certainly a great option if it were a 1v1, but in a free-for-all? I'm not sure I want to be the ship with with only 1 focus and 1 evade and 3HP who's imitating Soontir Fel. I just get the terrible feeling that it'd draw a lot of hate and get the token stripped quick. You'd have to start the game trying to run.

Also, never, ever bump.

It is a quick fire 1v1 multi round thing not a free for all just so I'm clear (i probably should have said that)

Edit: it's a normal game night so we would only get 3 (at a push) 100pts games in a night. We just wanted to mix it up a little with the 3ish hours we have.

Wait, what?! Why?!!

Haven't you ever played with R2D2 out of the core set? It's just gonna be a ton of single ships flying in circles not being able to kill each other.

Go for 35pt, PS11 Vader with VI, ATC, EU, and a 5pt bid. He's not as survivable as EVERYONE else, but I can't think of a better ship for less than 40pts that I'd like to have in a 1v1 type situation.

...or you could drop in a big Homing Missile to try and scrap Omega Leader before he can get a lock on you, but you could be at a disadvantage against other PS11 Vaders.

If it's doesn't work after the first 20 min we will probably just revert to 100pts games but we just wanted to try something different from the norm that we do every week.

Single opponent Single ship, eh?
Suddenly, Ordnance looks a lot more attractive.

Oh, Neeraaaa.....
(Sensor Jammer, the 3 point Torpedo, Bwing/E2 + Jan Ors, and Lone Wolf)

Also, I have been reminded that Red Ace exists.

+ Flechette Torpedoes (or 2 pts Initiative)

+ R2-D2

+ Comm Relay

+ Autothrusters

Regenerate essentially 2 shields a round. Nasty.

Tbh I forgot about LW.

Single opponent changes everything.

Jake and Vader are now looking pretty good since the ordnance allows them to hit really, really hard compared to the other ships on your list.

I have to say out of the two I think Vader is the stronger build purely because of the pilot skill difference.

But then again I'm also thinking that a cheap generic firespray with a few select upgrades wouldn't be terrible either (assuming that comes in under 40 - I don't have a great deal of familiarity with the ship).

Tough, decent primary, aux arc, plenty of upgrade options. Might surprise a few people.

I hadn't thought about a Firespray. The mando Merc would leave me with 5pts to spend.

God **** it you guys are meant to be helping me narrow it down not add more! ;)

How about Leebo, Determination and Gunner?

Gunner helps your damage output while Leebo + Determination gives you a pretty good chance of ignoring crits.

If you want less tanky and more shooty you could just go Wild Space Fringer, HLC and hull upgrade.

Straight up Patrol Leader.

But srsly this format is dumb, there are endless combinations of two single ship aces which can just fly around each other, never getting to shoot at each other, forever. Seriously, I chased Poe around with Vader for probably an hour and a half last night. WOuld have just called it, but no-one else had finished, so we had not reason to rush, we couldn't change opponents.

I'd probably go Omega Leader/Juke/Comm/Stealth and 11 point bid. OL is a fantastic single-ship hunter, probably the ultimate single-ship hunter in the game IME. If he gets you in arc, you are very likely to take damage, and you can't alter your dice which aces just loooove to do. His biggest challenge would be the regenerators.

THinking about it, TLT Miranda is probably optimal.

Yes, Miranda, TLT and C-3PO is not going to die in a hurry. Or swap C-3PO for a Gunner if you want to make sure you get your points' worth out of the TLT.

Edit. I will update this thread with how it went (flip or not)

I would limit it to 34 points just to keep super Fel out of the mix

Try 40 pts, 2 small ships, 2 x 2 play area, 4 Rocks. This "turboscenarios" are ultrafast and intense, playable in 15 minutes.

. Since it was mentioned that it will be a lot of no shooting I was think 2x2 was probably a good way to go.

Same number of asteroids. May the better pilot win.

I said this months ago, but 40 pts "Turboscenarios" are quite good format. If you are going to play Epic, play if somebody will arrive 15 min late. Play during lunchbreak. Or if simply you are low on time or space. My game group enjoy 150 to.400 pts with some plot, over 100 pts standard game. And this little skirmishes are pure joy.

I was happy. But now I am too in the world of the Six Rocks, so I am a complete adict. But I play against people who are 20 or even 30 years younger...

I agree, 100 points is great for pick-up games but there is so much scope for either quick games or going a bit bigger without full-blown epic. At my local club, we often play 150 points just to get some more fun combos in.

Wow, creative 40 pt. 2x2 with six asteroid skirmish. I would like to try this at "Dungeons End" My LGS

Here's a few ships I would try. (Listed are the cards, upgrades that I have. I haven't purchased any ships from Wave 8 yet)

Tie Defender Onyx (32) Mangler cannon (4) Engine Upgrade (4) (When Veterans comes out, drop the Mangler for Flechette with Tie/D title card 3:) )

Tie Phantom Echo (30) Calculation (1) Fire Control Sys. (2) Recon Spec. (3) Adv. Cloaking Device (4)

B-Wing Keyan Farlander (29) Calculation (1) Mangler Cannon (4) Fire Control Sys. (2) B-Wing/E2 (1) Kyle Katarn (3)

M3-A Interceptor Serissu (20) Lone Wolf (2) Heavy Laser Cannon (7) Hull Upgrade (3)

As you can see, I Mainly play the Imperials. But the other two look just as menacing.

Generally in a furball or 1v1, large base ships aren't allowed. The amount of hit points you have over your opponent is too great an advantage to make this particular game style fair.
