Question about Valuable Facts talent

By Kymrel, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm curious about the Valuable Facts talent from the Diplomat source book. Basically, it allows the character to roll an average knowledge check once per encounter. If successful, he adds a Triumph to a roll made by an ally during the encounter. So it's neat, but for a character like the Analyst that has the talent, it's can be one of the few things he can do in a tough combat.

The way I read it you add one Triumph. And since a Triumph also counts as a success, you therefor add one success. So if the ally rolls the dice and they come up blank (net 0 successes), using this will allow him to succeed with 1 success, and use the Triumph for a critical hit or something else he desires. A part of me thinks I must be reading that wrong, and that he only gets a Triumph to use, not the success.

How would you read this?

Here is the full text, just so that we are all on the same page:

Once per encounter, the character may take a Valuable Facts action, making an Average Knowledge check (the GM and player should determine which Knowledge skill is most applicable in the given situation). If successful, the character may add triumph_sm.png to any one check made by an allied character during the encounter.

The subsequent check should relate in some way to the facts the character learned, or the player should come up with an explanation for why the information the character learned is instrumental in the success of the ally’s check.

And here is the bit about Triumphs from the AoR Core book, p.20:

The Triumph symbol triumph_sm.png is a powerful result, indicating a significant boon or beneficial outcome. Each Triumph symbol provides two effects:

First, each Triumph symbol triumph_sm.png also counts as one Success, in every way Success success_sm.png has previously been defined. This means that the Success generated by a Triumph symbol triumph_sm.png could be canceled by a Failure symbol generated during the same skill check.
Second, each Triumph symbol can be used to trigger incredibly potent effects. [...]

Two things - (note the red text in the quote above)

1. I wouldn't allow this in most combat checks... with a few exceptions, which would have to appropriate for the narrative action taking place. Being able to advise an ally on a location for an aimed shot? Sure... add that Triumph. After watching a round or two of combat, and telling your buddy that the other guy leads with his left foot? No problem...

but there better be a way of getting that info across in such a way that the opponent doesn't know about it... This strikes me as more of a knowledge based boost.

2. It sure looks like it adds both aspects to me...

Ah, I had not noticed that addition to the FAQ. Thanks very much. That settles it nicely!

You know my take on this. :-)

Uses for Valuable Fact in Combat.

1. That particular series of Storm Trooper laminate suffers from a bad batch of materials causing it to fail when exposed to high temperatures.

2. The Gungan species due to its unique vocal box will collapse almost instantly if you hit them in the throat at the base of the neck.

3. The TIE Fighter manufactured during the summer at the insert shipping yard name here have a critical flaw in the armor so blaster fire to the left junction will cause severe structural damage.

The facts are trivial facts the character knows about the species, the equipment, the vehicles, the building and in some cases even a variety of disciplines that can be used to make the task succeed in a manner of a triumph. For proper examples look at the horrible tv show Scorpion and you will see it being used often...

I honestly wish that the Sage Tree had an improved valueble fact and supreme version.

Indeed. This extra success was what I was wondering about. It will be interesting to use this talent for the first time.

I have a follow-up question on "Valuable Facts" - can it be used to provide a Triumph to the PC that makes the check? Does he count as his own "allied character"? My gut says no, but I thought I'd see what everyone else thought.

"You know, a space station of that size needs an exhaust port AT LEAST as big as a womp rat."

The way I understand the Talent you need to give an ally the Triumph.
