Updated Base Game Rules Uploaded

By trevorade, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

The Base Rules were updated yesterday:
I performed a text-based diff of the old and new version of the rules:
Here are the highlights of the changes:
  • References to the Shadow Rune quest were replaced by the now included Heirs of Blood quest
  • "Activation Card" was renamed to "Reference Card"
  • Defeated rule clarification
  • Interrupting large monster movement clarification
  • Pit rules rewritten/clarified substantially
  • Two-Hero Games section added
  • Golden rule updated
  • Shopping/Spend Experience Points campaign step swapped
  • Five shop item cards instead of one per hero plus one

[Edit: Fixed the link. Diff should persist now.]

With all these changes to the rules and so, I think people have gotten very confused. I'm glad that the rulebook has been updated, even though I'm not exactly sure why they did some of those changes.

With the now flipped Spend Exp/Shopping steps, I now feel compelled to ask a question and that is simply, would it be all that unbalanced to just combine it into one step? The Shop cards are dealt out and revealed, then the players can go about spending gold and experience at the same time? Meanwhile any effects ( like Rumor cards that effect shopping phases) can take place during that one step? I feel this would be a better alternative to just swapping the steps.

Also, I'm not really sure how FF justifies eliminating "The Shadow Rune" Campaign from the base game altogether, Unless they have some means of which they are going to reprint it, it's just not going to be available at all to new players. I find that sad. I know it was their first campaign and they've gotten better with making them, but I feel as though this is material that should just not be written off.

This is first and foremost a game. If the Overlord agrees with the Heroes that they can combine the shopping and experience step, knock yourself out. The FFG/Descent police will not come knocking at your door (maybe the ghost of Kevin Wilson...)

If the Overlord wants to change which card to buy based on the items and class abilities purchased by the heroes, they should be able to. I don't think the strict ordering really matters much.

ok so some changes are big for us like the 2 hero question.

just wondering what your thoughts are - these new rules like the extra turn for the heros, five items in shop - would you continue these changes into the other expansions?

we have just finished shadow and about to move onto lair of the wyrm..

thanks guys

These changes are the base rules, so they apply to every campaign. If you are in the middle of a campaign, I say apply these rule changes after you finish it.

Hi to everyone, following errata from FFG the amount of cards that would need a re-print now is the following:

Reinforce
Diverse Means

MONSTER CARDS
Elemental, Act I and II
Giant, Sweep description
Troll, Sweep description

HERO SHEETS
Grisban the Thirsty
Thaiden Mistpeak

CLASS CARDS

Apothecary, "Potent Remedies"
Conjurer, "Mirror Image"

REFERENCE (activation) CARDS

AGENT CARDS

Because we are talking about Errata Corrige from the developer itself, I think it would be great if FFG will provide printable pdf download for these cards. I wonder if there's any way to have this happening.

So happy to see this. Had our first 2-nd Ed. Descent game last night and we love it. Rules seem clear first time you read them. But once we started playing we were amazed how many times we wondered how certain rules work together. Awesome game so far.
