@Reinholt... that's a good question... I guess I counted Core as Wave 1.

Gladiators (e.g., Demolisher) vs. ISD
So I would argue that Wave 2 (though shinier) is not necessarily better than Wave 1.

I think squadrons have held up really well. I still sometimes run Wave 1 fleets for grins, but they're pretty exclusively carrier fleets. Example:
