Anyone else wildly disappointed with the new tournament structure for rounds/cut?

By nikk whyte, in X-Wing

It looks to me like FFG is trying to keep 2 Loss players from making the cut for smaller round counts. At 40 Players, a Top 8 cut after 5 Rounds could let a single 3-2 player in (same for all the way down to 33 players).

At 45 players and 6 rounds, Top 8 cut might let a 4-2 player in.

I would guess they drew the line like this:

"At 5 rounds of X Wing, we don't want any 3-2 record players making the cut because they only won 60% of their games."

"At 6 rounds of X Wing, we are okay with 4-2 record players making the cut because they won 67% of their games."

It sucks that some players (up to 3?) that win 80% of their games are stuck using Tie Breakers, though, just to keep 60% winners from being put in the cut. My guess is they also assume a certain # of 1 loss, 3 win, 1 modified wins will occur, and are okay with just never letting those players make the cut. Once you get a mod win, you better not lose!

The event rules can't do anything if the venue doesn't run the event well.

That's a 6 round tournament, 5 at 70minutes 1 untimed. Those 5 timed rounds, accounting for time spent finishing up after time has expired, are likely going to run 6.5 hours. Unless that untimed round took close to 5 hours, the venue is solely responsible for that absurd run time of 13 hours.

That size of event could he done in 9 hours.

but lets break this down a little bit, im going to a tournament this weekend its about two hours away. I need to get there 30-45 mins early for registration, getting settled, traffic etc, so im gonna leave about 9am for a 12 launch time. then we have 70 mins a round x 4 rounds, but really its like 85-90 mins with short breaks in between. So now at cuts its 5:45 (hopefully). At this point Im heading home but good players maybe still have a shot that could last them another 3 hours. Now its 9pm. 2 hr drive home...

a 9 hr event is a long time man.

So best/worse case for me is I leave home at 9am, get first place, get home at 11pm. Still a REALLY long day for me, and a super long day as well for a store that is trying to sell stuff other than xwing.

I'm not arguing that that isn't a long day for you or anybody. I'm responding to the OP who I'm not sure what his point is by bringing up an event that ran 13 hours when it could have likely been done in 9.

I can only guess that he is attempting to illustrate that even with a smaller cut events can still take forever, which makes no sense given his initial stance that the cut should be larger and by consequence the tournament longer. So if that one venue is going to run a 13 hour event, we might as well just do a bigger cut because what's the different at thar point? Again I'm unsure how that is supporting his orginal position.

Every post of mine in this thread has made mention that tournaments need to be formatted in a way that logistically allows them to be run. So I think you're preaching to the choir on this one.

My friend was 4-1 after swiss and finished 7th place. 5th was 3 MOV points from making the cut. I would argue that top 8 is necessary.

Edit: sorry...double post

as a real reply to this post I have seen more than a couple stores cut off registration at 24 to even stop a 5 round/ 4 cut tournament day. If you start at noon that is a long day with travel.

Then don't go? you know what you're signing up for when you register. A part of winning is being able to physically handle the demands of tournament play on top of the actual game.

Didn't ask to be blown up those terrorists however had different plans.

What stores start a championship at 12?

9:30am has been the latest start I have seen round here. One started at 8:30am.

LoL

Most of the store championships in Ohio this year have begun at about noon or 1 p.m. (quoting to keep picture size down):

So players like me who are physically disabled shouldn't bother showing up? Super inclusive aren't you?

is x-wing inclusive to trans gamers?

Might be the northern hemispheres winter causing all those late starts.

The early start day is not so taxing with time for an hour lunch break and rarely goes beyond 7pm at the latest. I was up at 5am to get the bus out to my last sc for an 8:30am start.

I don't see why not. I don't care what genitalia you feel you should have been born with, let's move plastic spaceships and throw dice as fellow nerds.

Cut to top 4 just means you need to win more. In the end if you make the cut on a top 4 cut you will feel like you accomplished more. I really dont think where the cut is will affect much. The best players will still be at the top in most cases. And as far as the disabled players goes; as long as you can physically perform the tasks needed to play go for it. In my area most of the people would even be willing to help you get stuff moved around if needed. That being said; major tourneys with large player counts are going to be physically taxing and if you get to a point that you just are not able to continue then I'm sorry but that is part of it. Same could be said for diabetic players that need to get something to eat mid tourney or any other ailment. The last 2 store championships I attended were very lenghty afairs that did not break for lunch or dinner. Just the way it is.

Finally to the gentleman that indicated terrorist caused disability; I would personally like to thank you for your sacrifice.

Just curious but where is this information coming from? There hasn't been a tournament rules update since January.

The current tournament structure doesn't help keep things timely either.

A 4 round tournament with a cut to top four ran from 10a-11p in Huntsville.

And then I drove back to Georgia and got home at 3 in the morning, because one of our carpoolers won the tournament.

Sometimes you do stuff with your friends because it's fun, timing be damned.

Well that's your fault for carpooling with Sam :P At this point, it's expected he's either gonna win or make Top 4 unless he voluntarily drops.
