If you could only buy one epic ship...

By Conandoodle, in X-Wing

Only one I personally don't have much interest in is the Tantive. Sure, it'd look great sitting on a desk, but I play very little epic (sadly) and when it comes to regular gameplay it's easily the one that gives you the least, especially with C-3PO now being readily available as a promo card. R2 crew is solid, Han crew is amusing, Leia crew is painfully overpriced, but that's all you're getting if Epic isn't something you're going to get a lot of time with.

So if you like Rebels, go with the GR-75. Get all kinds of nice Astromechs, some solid X-Wing pilots (Porkins!), and a new X-Wing itself to boot. And heck, I think it's a beautiful ship.

Imperial side... that is a much, much harder choice. They're both fantastic (both in power and beauty) ships in their own right, and both come with a ridiculous amount of wonderful stuff to be used outside of Epic play. I'd say the Raider probably wins out simply because of what it'll do for your TIE Advanceds and gives you Palpatine. With that said, I was literally scrambling to find a way to justify throwing down even more X-Wing money for my Gozanti. As a fan of Rebels I really wanted Kallus, and I found all of the new TIE Pilots (except Youngster) to be exciting enough that I wanted to play with em' on my table.

Raider, unquestionably. It makes use of the Energy/Secondary weapons mini game well and provides great things for 100 point games in the form of Palpatine and the Advanced fix. Also, a big imperial ship vs rebel fighters is just iconic in general.

The Gozanti is a great buy, but it doesn't really get much use out of the great upgrade cards it comes with. Those things are mostly designed for players that already have a CR90 or Raider. It's a great ship and quite cheap if you need a couple more TIEs anyway, but it wouldn't be my choice for my only Epic ship.

CR90 is similar in a lot of ways to the Raider, but I feel it needs the Gozanti upgrades more and if only one side has a capital ship, I'd rather it be the Imperials personally.

The Rebel Transport is my preferred Rebel epic ship, but I wouldn't recommend it as the only Epic ship you own. It's cool, but not at all flashy. It won't compel you to try Epic the same way the CR90 or Raider will.

There is great advice here.

I'm leaning towards the Rebel Transport for the following reasons.

1. It looks great (but they all do!)

2. Possible use in non-epic games. As I have all the gear for my little gaming group we will probably never play a full epic game.

3. X-Wing Pilots (Looks like all kits have great upgrade cards though)

4. I love the OT.

5. Price

I have all of the small and large ship expansions that I want (all OT) but was hoping for an epic scale ship that will add some flavour to our little casual games. I think the Transport might fit this role

Also, if anyone has a spare C3PO. I'd be happy to trade/buy it. I can't get anywhere near a FLGS at the moment. My wife just had our first child and has had a few complications before, during and after the birth. I've been by her side as much as possible and things have been a bit difficult. On the plus side, I've had some time while she's resting to do stuff on the 'puter.

Thanks again for your input. Your time and considerate responses are greatly appreciated.

Nebulon-B......... :(

That's crazy talk! What kind of lunatic would buy a Nebulon B?

One should mention that the Gozanti is the only ship of the four epics which is actually in scale! Might be worth to know for a buy.

All the other epic ships use a smaller scale compared to the default fighters of the game...!

Raider, iconic design, extremely useful set of cards.

Well, that depends: Where do you want to excel?

I'm going with Gozanti as my winning answer for now :)

I only bought one epic ship - a GR-75 transport.

You can use the ship as debris in a standard game. And it comes with a plethora of useful astromechs. (This was the main selling point for me.) Plus, a bunch of flechette torpedoes.

The extra X-Wing and accompanying pilots aren't too bad either.

Finally, the transport is the cheapest epic available; I got mine for $35.

On scale with the largest model in the game, a Star Destroyer is approximately.... slightly larger than the table you're playing on.

But the largest models are not on scale with the rest of the game. Why would this have to be any larger that 2.5 times the length of the Raider. Even Armada doesn't scale their ships accordingly although in the case of fairness it is a much better job than Attack Wing.

Okay you may need for mats with this increasing Epic to a 6' x 6' play area, but you got to admit...

IT STILL WOULD BE EPIC!

Rent a high-school gymnasium in the summer. Run the whole game to scale, with the two player's dials being projected into the center of the field.

One of our game shops here actually has a table with one side of it setup to represent one side of a Star Destroyer. It's a "bring as much stuff as you own" type game. They've had 600 and 900 point lists. It's quite a large play area.

No photo ... never happened.

As far as I recall a Imperial Class I SD would be about 5 m (16') long and 2 (7') m wide if it'd be to scale to a standard x-wing model.

Imperial Light Carrier.

Not sure where I'd keep it, but...

There was a fantastic rendered image which showed an Imperial Star Destroyer alongside other X-Wing models both full scale and in various reduced sizes doing the rounds on this forum a couple of years ago.

I can't be bothered trying to find it, though.

No matter what you pick, don't get stuck on "epic" games. What I mean is, just make up something that sounds good. Do 150 pts per side. Or 200. Or...make it unbalanced, but one side has to do something crazy. What I mean is, don't get hung up on 300 vs 300.

My preference is 2v2 200 points per player personally. X-Wing is one of the few combat games I think plays well in a team environment due to the heavily integrated model activations.

No you need three. Otherwise some of the squadron will have to be left behind. You dont want that do you? :P

My Nebulon B Frigate's going to be carrying the other four.

I can't imagine only getting one! Im itching to buy a third Gozanti and a third transport! LOL!

But if one is all you will get, it has to be the Raider currently! Many others have already said this and I'm just adding my vote to the pile!

I loved the Rebel Transport because it looks like a large sago worm. We frequently snack on sago worms (as well as hand them out to visiting missionaries / tourists who come to longhouses)

First of all, congratulations with your firstborn, and best wishes to you and your family.

Secondly, instead of suffering through me warbling on and on, there are of course unboxing videos on youtube if you haven`t checked them out already :)

1. If you get one, take a look at the underside with all the differently coloured containers, the detail is amazing, it is a real shame that you can`t see it while playing.

2. Yeah, one downside to "proper" epic, is that it can definetly be fairly lengthy, especially in a more casual setting with more banter and maybe less experienced players. Sure, you can set a time limit and tally up the score from there, but if both sides are still reasonably even, that can feel a bit unsatisfying. So with this in mind the Transport (and Gozanti) are far better choices then the Corvettes, which really need the full epic to come into their own.

The Transport for example comes with a booklet with 4 missions. 3 that can either be played individually or strung together to form a mini campaign, They come with some special rules that add flavour, range from 100 to 200 points per side, are all played on the standard 3`x 3` playing field, and have winning conditions beyond merely destroying everything, and all can be finished in a reasonable timeframe.

The 4th mission is bigger, and requires 3 Transports, so probably not quite what you are looking for.

3. Yup. Even if you want to stick to the OT, if you haven`t already got it, the Integrated Astromech that comes with the standalone T-70 expansion is definetly worth getting hold of for the X-Wings.

4. Well, duh... :) While it took awhile for me to warm up to some of the stuff that has been released (especially some of the scum ships that I have never even heard of) and I have come to thoroughly enjoy almost everything, to me there still is not anything quite as satisfying as seeing OT ships like a small group of x-wings and y-wings desperately trying to hold of swarms of tie fighters and protecting a fleeing transport.

5. My wallet wish I was sensible like you.

I see you keep to the OT, but if you end up with the Transport here is a few upgrade cards that goes really well with the x-wing and the transport that I suggest you might want to get hold of.(Proxy, trade or buy seperately)

Integrated Astromech: Comes in the recently released T-70 expansion, and is great for the T-65

R7 Astromech: Comes in the E-Wing expansion, and works really well on Tarn Mison

Targeting Coordinator: Comes with the Tantive. Crew card that can hand out target locks to nearby ships. Really useful.

Shield Technician: Comes with the Raider. Crew that gives you better managment of shields

Jan Ors: Comes with the Rebel Aces, so you probaly have this already.

Sabine Wren: Comes with the Ghost, Will allow the transport to drop bombs/mines.

Kanan Jarrus: Comes with the Ghost. Maybe redundant, since the transport has other ways of shedding stress on allied ships

Cluster Bombs: Comes with the Gozanti, allows a 1 shot range 1 retaliation strike

Ionization Reactor: Comes with the Tantive. Expensive "trick" card, but hilarious if you pull it off.

Automated Protocols: Comes with the Gozanti. Sort of Push the Limit, but for huge ships.

And while I belive you already know this, the absolutely most important thing:

Have fun, and make the game into what you want it to be.

Much as I enjoy the standard 100pt game (even including the hours spent in squadbuilders absolutely agonizing over every single point spent) x-wing has so, so much more to offer than that. And as others in this thread has said, do not in any way be afraid to break away from the standard point setups.

Nebulon-B......... :(

That's crazy talk! What kind of lunatic would buy a Nebulon B?

I am so not in any way, what so ever, in any form, the least bit envious of your Nebulon at all..... or at least that is what I keep telling myself :)
