Miniature quality question...

By tomkat364, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I just recently bought Descent, and was very displeased with the quality of my miniatures. I play Battlelore and IA, both of which have great quality minis. I know Descent was made prior to both games, so I don't know if the quality is poorer due to the age of the sculpts, deterioration of the molds, or just a bad batch.

The above pic shows the very heavy, rough flash present on most of the minion minis. The masters look much better, so I'm thinking the molds may be the problem. It's very difficult to tell where the flash stops and the mini begins.

Syndrael's torso was glued off-center so that her right hip sticks out past her torso, and her torso overhangs her left hip, creating a zig-zagged body.

I'd be very interested to hear if others have had the same problem. If it is just par for the sculpts and I'm expecting too much by comparing them to IA or Battlelore, that's fine. If I got a bad batch, then I'll take it up with FFG. Any help?

i have the same issues especially on goblin archers and zombies, but i definately think your syndrael has indeed a problem.

There is no difference between the minion and the master, and I didn't remove any mold lines before painting because I am lazy:)

Just request replacements for the bad ones. It's free. You just need to take pictures of the damaged/defective ones:

I got replacements for several from this.

I plan to do so. Just didn't know if this was 'normal' for the Descent minis or if I truly got a bad batch, but thanks for the advice. Did you have a lot of defective ones?

I actually have close ups of all my miniatures... https://goo.gl/photos/FBKv9RBMEJN1cCwXA

Now that I know what to look for, I do notice that a few of the miniatures have flashing problems... https://goo.gl/photos/KPwCt28hGukYsDtTA(This master Goblin Archer in particular has bad flashing. I should probably look into getting that one replaced)

The one that I replaced was the Shadow Dragon who had two of his whiskers snapped off. I also had a Merriod replaced due to a bent tentacle. Later, I learned that it's really easy to fix bent things in these models: just dip the miniature in boiling water briefly (swish it around for like 2 or 3 seconds), adjust the bent part of the miniature (base, arm, tentacle, weapon, etc.), while holding it in place, dip it in ice water.

I hold them under a tiny stream of hot water. This is a bit more precise and prevents accidentally bending other parts of the mini:) And blowing to cool them also works for me.
