printer friendly Rules / FAQ PDFs

By allienshar, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello X-Wingers,

I like to keep a hard copy of the FAQ and Rules with me when I play, but FFG only supplies PDFs with those ink-heavy coloured backgrounds. I asked FFG about printer-friendly versions a month or two ago and they couldn't be bothered to respond to me. Does anyone have a suggestion regarding this? Copying and pasting the rules into a word processor creates a lot of formatting issues.

Much thanks.

I run the PDFs off in black and white on my printer (because it only prints in black and white). Otherwise I save the PDFs into the "iBooks" app on my iPhone so I can have them in my pocket ready to go. Saves paper and ink while only inconveniencing electrons.

Otherwise...do you have a printer at work? Sneak print them there

Or, if you work in a copy-shop....

Some new copiers can ignore backgrounds. They basically just look at text. Check with Staples and see if they have this ability.

Kinkos is another option but they are REALLY fussy about printing copy righted material. They may or may not do it.

I think that newer versions of Adobe can sift the text from the background.

The game itself is copyrighted, but strangely enough, the Rules Reference and the FAQ don't have a copyright on them. I suspect that's so anyone can print them out if need be.

Add me to the list :)

I'm looking for a printer friendly version, too. But I guess that is too much to ask for, when spending hundreds of $$$ for miniatures :(

Game rules are not subject to copyright (i.e. they cannot be copyrighted). The art in them, however, can be copyrighted. This is why game rules usually have a considerable amount of art included with them, including even the background to the text.

By asking FFG for printer-friendly rules, you're effectively asking them to make it as easy as possible for you to violate their IP. I generally wouldn't expect any publisher to help you do this.

The rulebooks that come with both the original game and the TFA expansion are quite handy, easily fitting in with the rest of your kit. It's pretty unclear why anyone would need to print them out in a different format.
