Skirmish Mission Cards required for Store Tournaments?

By CalebML, in Imperial Assault Rules Questions

Hey all,

Just wondering if the skirmish mission cards are required for Store Tourney's? I read that the TO chooses a mission each round for everyone to play, so it would seem like the players don't need their own.

Each player is required to bring ALL game materials, including figures, dice, tiles, and cards.

This includes the mission cards.

Seems frustrating for new players to have to buy 2 specific expacs they may not want just to play in tournaments, especially if you only want to play rebel squads for example

Ahh, there's the rub. The way the current tournament scene works, it basically requires that everyone buy stuff, even though they may not need it for other reasons, to ensure that there are always enough "assets" to allow for all the games. Maybe if FFG went to pre-printed maps, it would alleviate this issue.

I must say I have accepted my fair share of "buy in" to stay competitive in FFG's Top Dog X-Wing miniatures, but you have never needed to buy specific expansions other than the core just to be able to enter a tournament.

In this instance trying to sell a new player on the game but saying "BTW you have you buy your 4th squad of Stormtroopers you don’t really want for an A4 piece of paper in the box" just to be allowed to play in a tournament seems a real stretch. Seeing how players have been asking for legalised printed maps for a while now and no response from FFG I'm guessing that’s not going to happen either.

This also does not factor in that in some locations getting stock of said specific expansions can be hard to come by, I had to source a box of twin shadows form the UK as I couldn’t get it anywhere in my own country at the time.

I guess we just have to lump it for the time being.

Seems kind of rubbish to have to buy it IMO for a single card.

Well, you get the card and the map. ;)

Yeah that's what I was asking. I don't want to buy the Stormtroopers Pack and the RGC just so I can have the cards to play, especially if the TO draws the card for the mission anyway. And I could always just print off a diagram of the tiles for skirmish maps so i can set it up. Oh well, guess I can resell the Stormtrooper pack afterwards. Just frustrating that I have to buy expansions I don't want just to compete.

As per Tournament Rules, the TO uses cards to randomly determine a mission.

After that I doubt anyone is going to care if you use a print out to set up the map. Maybe people at Nationals and Worlds would care, but really it doesn't affect the game.

Let's not get so caught up in rule wording that we start worrying about stuff like this.

I can see the argument for owning the appropriate tiles... but the mission card or folded piece of paper with a map printed on it shouldn't be the most important part of the day.

It really depends on the tournament organizers. Your best bet is to contact them and see what they will/wont allow.

Here in FFG's backyard, nothing short of official will fly.
