Aragorn, Ladies Man

By ajl1980, in Strategy and deck-building

Been netdecking for almost 2 years, I'm OK when it comes to deck building but not great. I just got the Lost Realm / Angmar Awakened cycle in one purchase (tax return time!) and have been blown away by the new player cards. The quests so far are really tough, and I was getting my arse handed to me in the first couple scenarios (7/1 Intruders in Chetwood, 5/1 The Weather Hills). I built this specifically for The Weather Hills and beat it with ease, but if anyone could provide any feedback - especially with the Angmar Awakened pool, I'm loving the cards! - that would be great. Hopefully this can prove to be a versatile deck...

Arwen is an amazing resource generator in a pinch, useful for planning phase or Aragorn's readying effect if he spends all his cash. She also quests for a significant amount in the early game, and +2 between Faramir and Sword tw Broken gives her total 5 in late game. Elven-Light is amazing

On Galadriel I put Mirror, Silver Harp, Nenya and Unexpected Courage. UC can enable her to either (1) drop threat by 1 and draw card and then contribute to quest for up to a whopping 6, or (2) contribute to quest and then ready and buff Aragorn with Tale of Tinuviel. After she's set up you're drawing 4 cards per round when you've got Elven-Light doing its thing (I easily burned through my deck).

Aragorn gets the rest - Steward of Gondor, Celebrian's Stone, Sword tw Broken, Ring of Barahir + Blood of Numenor (=great defense). He can attack for 7 with tale of Tinuviel, and with a Sneak Attack Gandalf that's a full 11 attack with +4 damage inflicted. He can quest, defend and attack all in the same round if the cards are played right.

I found that with Elrond's Counsel and Galadriel's threat reduction I was hovering mid 20's threat for full game of The Weather Hills. Overkill? Maybe Elrond's Counsel could go and be replaced with something more effective? Allies are a little random, just trying out the new ones. Elven Jeweller has been effective when your hand is full of duplicate uniques and need to drop them.

I haven't had time, but I always vowed that if we ever got Arwen I was building a love triangle deck with Eowyn and Arwen.

I think the deck is too scattered, not focused enough. I can't tell what the core theme is. You have too many cards sprinkled in that are 2x.

I have played a lot with Galadriel and, in my opinion, you have to play like you are running only 2 heroes, so you have to have a lot of strong allies quickly (for example) to compensate. Dunedain Watcher does not cut it. Apparently you are afraid of nasty shadow effects? Too expensive for no stats. The weakness of you heroes, especially with Galadriel, is a total lack of defense. I don't think your Guardian of Arnor are enough. You could us blood of numenor with Steward and ring to make Aragorn a good defender, but then you have no attack (and without card draw you won't see the right cards consistently. Another option is tale of Tinuviel to boost Aagorn, but, again, that is only two one time events. It is not consistent enough to be a dependable strategy. You would need a way to repeat tale of Tinuviel over and over along with a way to ready Aragorn for defense and attack.

I think the main strength of the hero lineup is that the extra resource from Arwen allows Aragorn to quest every round without staying exhausted. You still end up with the same amount of resources. Galadriel is good in combo decks, so you should pick a combo (like blood of numenor/Steward or recurring tale) and sell out to it completely. Cut everything that doesn't fit the core theme.

I posted a deck I made with these heroes but, after not being able to anything with Galadriel, I just switched to Glorfindel. I would suggest cutting everything that does not either buff the heroes or provide a small combat or questing bonus, like many of the smaller allies. Dúnedain watcher, Son of Arnor and Elven Jeweller seem pretty much wasted here. Focus more on action advantage for Aragorn as well as boosting, with stuff like another Tale of Tinuviel, Dwarven Tomb, Miruvor, etc. Light of Valinor works great with Arwen and Tale of Tinúviel, and also, where is Heir of Mardil? It works so good with Aragorn and Arwen it seems like a no-brainer. And also, Weather Hills Watchman is also pretty much wasted without any Signals. I would add x3 Dúnedain Warning if you're planning on making Aragorn your main defender. I'd also add more Ring of Barahir and Burning Brand. I'd also recommend cheap questers like Ethir Swordsman or Galadriel's Handmaiden.

Like Gizlivadi, I also made a deck with these heroes. However, I found it to not be too effective. I was very weak in combat, always needing to use Aragorn to defend and then never being able to kill anything. The deck was also far too dependent on finding steward of gondor quickly, and in general seemed to take forever to set up.

I solved my combat problem by including OHaUH Gandalf. As you mentioned, your threat stays quite low, and OHaUH Gandalf is a perfect fit. However, the deck still wasn't perfect - it just took too long to set up, and I would usually end up wasting Tale of Tinuviel on some small enemy.

Awesome thanks for the feedback folks! Like I said I've had okay results making my own decks after two years and can never really figure out if I should attribute success to deck building skill or encounter deck luck. The best netdeck I've played is the "One Deck to Rule Them All (Nightmare Edition)" posted here, and was the first to show me that a good gimmick or two can have consistently good results. I guess that's a model to follow!
