The Sad Case of Blue Ace

By Kdubb, in X-Wing

So I was thinking about Blue Ace today, and I had lots of fun ideas coming to mind for builds.

And then I remembered she has no EPT.

And then I also remembered she is only PS 5.

Am I the only one that is disappointed that her ability seems fantastic, if only she had an EPT and higher PS? Without those things, she seems highly mediocre.

So as I was continuing to thinking about her plight, I thought, "Hmm... wouldn't it have been cool if FFG had swapped her and Ello Atsy's ability?" That white T-roll would be pretty usable even at PS 5 without an innate EPT, and PS 7 is plenty high enough for a powerful boosting ability to be utilized.

So what are some thoughts on Blue Ace? I would love to use her, and I think I've determined her best use must be as a sort of Ace blocker, where that turn boost can just wreck some pilots day with a surprise block, but even that seems niche when you can do the same pretty effectively with, say, a Wired+Daredevil Green Squadron pilot.

So lets hear it. How do I need to be using Blue Ace?

Nope, you have it correctly. Too low of a pilot skill for me, and no good way to bump it up without an EPT.

I was using Blue Ace with Poe and Biggs until Ello came along. Now it seems I never even consider it now. Cant even make it awesomr with Lightning Reflexes. It now just sits in my tackle box. Unloved.

Now do what ever you want with the ept, you also don't need to run integrated if you want thrusters.

I think blue ace is highly under rated.

I could see Blue Ace with the EPT-bot, Integrated Astromech, and Predator as just a general beatstick that has some maneuver tricks. The hard-1 boost makes it super easy to dodge arcs (while keeping your shots) on lower PS pilots and to work through asteroid fields.

You said it before I could...

Tried this in a furball and was destroyed by lack of pilot skill. I really wish they had given Blue Ace higher skill and the ept.

You could pair her with R7-T1 for 30 points, and Experimental Interface for 33.

Needs daredevil and experimental interface for 270 degree turns

R7-T1 is a trap on Blue Ace, for a point more you can take R2-D6 + Pred and get rerolls on the most opportune target without the limitation of it being a ship that's looking at you. And if your maneuver put you in a good spot? Focus + Predator!

Blue Ace is always gonna suffer the low PS, but you can fly erratic and throw people off scary easy. Bank toward a board edge and then hard Boost back in. Blue Ace never has to Tallon Roll. He/she is good.

Also with the R2-D6 + IA interaction you get an extra shield for free (assuming you already took the droid for EPT).

Yeah, Jess Pava is fine if you treat her like the mid-PS beauty she is (basically Lt.Lorrir with boost instead of BR and implemented properly).

High PS is a crutch, mid PS is where the flavor's at...

Agreed. Sick of PS pumping.

Also, how do we know the names of the pilots? Or rather, how do we know which names go to which pilot exactly?

We don't, per se, but Lt. Bastian is the only other named Red Squad pilot (thus Red Ace) and Blue Squad is limited to Snap and Jess, so it's Jess due to affirmative action. Up 'til any of the above get their own pilot cards, this naming scheme makes the most sense.

Also, though Nien Nunb is one of the pilots attacking Death Star III, there's some speculation that he's actually a member of Black Squad.

I feel like her/his ability should have been on an Interceptor or something.

Blue Ace + BB8 + IA is a good ship.

IIRC there isn't a black squad. Poe is black leader because of the black x wing. I think he's actually in charge of red squadron.

He actually leads both Red & Blue Squadron as Black Leader (named so for his ship Black One)

I wish FFG had swapped the PS of Red Ace and Blue Ace.

Red Ace doesn't care what PS he/she is at but Blue Ace kinda needed the higher PS. With VI that would of put her PS 8 and in nice place.

Just think how different the meta could have been if Poe and Blue Ace had their abilities swapped. ;)

its ok as a filler ship, but the amazing ability is really hurt by the low PS. PS5 is arguably the worst or 2nd worst place to be right now considering you pay for it.

Try to give him an EPT paying one extra point. Fly casual and open your mind. Speak to.other players you know, fly with Grey Squadron plus EPT, try 120 pts, moving asteroids, a Ordnance Tubes equiped Yt 1300...

Intelligence Agent is your friend with Blue Ace.

Also an R2-D2 equipped Blue Ace is very difficult to finish off. The hard boost makes shield regen and staying out of arc much better.

Blue Ace has every chance of beating Poe in a head to head battle. Poe has no idea where Blue Ace will end up. The ability to turn around without getting stressed is very nice.

You got me thinking... This list could be fun. Right turns and movement control could keep you pivoting on a dime and firing every round. The Z flies separate and flanks. Alternatively you could give the B's tractor beam and trade the Z for an A. Or drop the flanker and buff the B's. I'd take the flanker though.

That's a big ol' cup of yes.

I only have the core set T-70 pilots, but I've seen em all. Even seen Ello recreate his famous death scene a few times, why was he so awesome again? Lol. Anyways, if you're looking for an ace pilot, just take an ace pilot. Why argue with the Foecus Dameron? You can't.

However, if you wanna do something cool like fly a T-70 like it's a goddamn A-Wing on steroids, then you take Blue Ace. Free Daredevil EPT on a hopped up X-Wing, with no stress? You should be making that gabba-gabba-haroo sound that the cartoon dog detective makes when he sees his girlfriend all dressed up for a night out. That's a real cartoon, so it's legit.

I don't hear any haroo's yet...

I like that you can bank one direction, then hard boost the opposite direction. That lets you displace laterally, but keep guns on a target. That's a sweet move, roughly equivalent of Barrel Roll out, then boost back in on a straight move, but you don't need PTL to do it.
