Allowing the group to have a 2nd. stock light freighter

By daddystabz, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I am running a local FFG Star Wars campaign for a very large group of players....currently 8. The PC's currently have the Krayt Fang YT-1300 light freighter but I'm considering giving them a chance at commandeering a second freighter from a bounty hunter pursuing them. If I do it will be a YT-2400.

If the players do not decide to switch over to the YT-2400 and do not sell it for a fraction of its worth what problems do you foresee with allowing them to have both ships working together in tandem. I feel like if I can iron out any potential problems it would be really good for them and give more of the characters more things to do in starship combats.

No biggy in my mind. Another place to sink money. More weapon stations and stuff for everyone to have something to do in ship combat as well I'd think.

With a group that size, I think it's a good thing. It'll give them more flexibility in how they approach things and allow them to make space combat much more interesting.

Plus, it'll allow them to split the party significant distances and attempt to deal with multiple plot threads simultaneously.

I think it'd be a good move for the campaign, long-term.

Most groups will already have a starting resource of a freighter. But 8 people is probably a bit larger than the standard expectations for a group. So a second 1300 is not a hard sell.

That, and it also allow the group to make "two teams". One with the diplomacy, one with the aggression. If you are going for the YT 2400, then it makes sense for the YT-1300 to be more diplomatic, as the 2400 would have a bit more muscle.

Yeah, it should work out fine, although it does now allow them to split the party much farther apart, as they could even go to different star systems.

That isn't necessarily a problem, but something you either will need to be able to deal with or discuss with your players ahead of time.

You'd probably freak out with my group as we own 4 corvettes, 2 light freighters, 4 squadrons of starfighters, and have almost a complete regiment of war droids. Adding more ships to the party only means that the scope of the game changes from being small to more epic. The more resources the group acquires just means that the enemies that they'll face are higher ranked.

They may be better off with a bigger Sil 5 ship and a couple of Sil 3 Snub Fighters docked to the outside

Two SLFs of almost any models are a non-issue as long as there's action stations to fill and the minimum stations are covered on both.

or have a "friendly" NPC offer to take those two hunks of junk off their hand for a bigger "better" ship "more suited to the needs of a team like yourselves..."

The only problem I ran into with my group having 1 silhouette 5 ship and some fighters, is that silhouette 5+ ships are boring to fly in. They can't evade, they can't gain the advantage, they can't punch it. They just speed up, slow down, and move around, all very slow, like a whale.

A pair of light freighters could potentially do all of that, times 2. Which I think would be pretty fun. Plus, in space combats, enemies would have two targets to deal with, which can lighten the load one ship has to bear.
