Resource Nightmare

By rgrove0172, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Ive touched on this a few times on the forum here and if bore or aggravate anyone for repeating myself, I apologize ahead of time but Im still looking for some assistance.

When working up an adventure (or a thousand times worse, when just running a freeform type session) the GM will on occasion (or constantly depending on their style of GMing) refer to his resources to find... oh, a particular weapon or armor type, an alien race, or maybe a specific piece of equipment or a vehicle that fits the scene just right, or a special talent that would make an NPC unique and challenging.

With each and every supplement FFG puts out the game resource becomes larger (a good thing) but next to impossible to browse (not a good thing at all). This is a real nuisance when planning a session but makes spur of the moment hunting nearly impossible. With a whole shelf full of books and each one including expansions to lists of talents, equipment, ships, weapons etc. You've got to have a photographic memory to 'browse' for that one item/talent/ship your looking for.

Typically you just say the 'heck with it' and wing it yourself and basically render that $30 and really cool book mute.

There are a few kind souls out there that have attempted to build indexes for this sort of thing but frankly, with only a title to go by and no brief description they are limited help when browsing.

Im not sure I have an answer to this problem but Id be very surprised if others aren't experiencing it.

In our last game I wanted a certain Rival Adversary to carry a signature weapon. I had intended to write it up but forgot and found myself in the middle of the session when I remembered. Glancing through the core book nothing really fit and then I looked over at my book shelf and the 10 or so books staring back at me. Ugggh. So I gave the guy a blaster with the Accurate trait and called it done. Ho hum, not at all what I intended.

Surely FFG in electing to piecemeal so much info in a series of supplements has a way to index and search through it all? If not, WTF were they thinking?

You wanted to give the Rival the special weapon for the PCs to loot?

I feel your pain. The fan-made index does help this quite a bit but I still completely get what you are saying.

So copying something from a book is more reflective of a 'signature' item than using your own imagination to create something completely unique to your table?

I've found the character builder to be just the thing for what you're suggesting. It gives lots of options for filtering and sorting equipment (weapons, armor, gear) so that you can see what you'd like to see in the various pickers. Keep it open on a notebook or tablet at the table and you can look up whatever you need in a minute or two.

I keep an Excel spreadsheet for things like this. I started the spreadsheet when the line was in its infancy, so updating it every time a new book comes out is pretty simple.

I recommend the NPC cards listed in the communitee resources thread. Someone has made a communitee resource of all the trees in the game. The Oggdude chracter generator is an amazing resource as well.

And this problem is the problem with all RPG games and is a product of them being books. And is not a simple problem to solve.

Well, if not then ffg is wasting a lot of money publish I ng books don't you think? They are published as a resource, I'd kinda like to use them.

My dream book? That FFG puts out a book - just reprints, mind you - of nothing but weapons and armor. And then another one of ships. All the stats (or at least a great many stats) all in one place for ease of GM perusal. I would buy the hell out of those books!

Given books that were just released 3 months ago are going to reprint somehow I don't think FFG is wasting money.

I also wouldn't expect a complete index until they're done with the product line. They released one for WH3E.

I'd be shocked if they didn't release some consolidation book(s) when it's said and done. While they're in mid stream still developing product and getting the line out the door personally I don't want them wasting employee time on convenience materials.

I also would be more inclined to make a custom item for a custom adversary in this case. I don't see why people get so wound up about simply using their own imagination, even you, you're dismissive of your own creativity in regards to the solution you used at your table but somehow spoon fed content is superior.

Honestly even were the info more easily available you shouldn't be wasting table time looking up rules or stuff.

Also look at the Adversary cards. Not only the ones by FFG, but also the unofficial ones by Salith, referenced in the “Compiled Resource List”.

IIRC, Salith has a card for every single known published Adversary from every book, and he’s up to something like 400-some odd cards now.

The FFG cards are much prettier, but Salith wins on completeness of information — hands-down.

Id settle for a PDF, paid for of course, with a master list of weapons, armor, ships, vehicles, gear, talents, etc. updateable by prescription or something.

You know that the Data Editor of OGGDude's Tools has everything you need. Why do you keep creating threads when there is already a solution to what you want?

Perhaps its just me but I don't like spending time working up the stats for something that is already included in the game somewhere. Yes I suppose it really doesn't matter if my Y-Wing is exactly like the one in the book or my custom security droid is different than the one in this supplement or that one but Im a bit of a sucker for conventionality and if the designers and play testers at FFG have elected to publish some tid bit of the StarWars universe in one of the books or add-ons, then its canon to me and I hate not using it when the need arises.

Ive run the Star Wars character generator several times and never found what you are referring to. My apologies though, this will be the last thread on this issue, assured.

You have run the launcher for it and the Data Editor is the final option on the left hand side. The other options are Character Generator and GM Tools.

Yes I see that but there are no descriptions of the various entries, just references to books and page numbers. I suppose that helps a bit and its a fine program but why not take that next step and make it all available?

Look for Vegomatic's data set or enter in the stuff on your own.

Not from FFG. At least, not under what we understand of their current license agreement with the House of Mouse.

There’s plenty of other threads on that topic, so I won’t say anymore.

But until/unless FFG comes out with books and cards to cover every single thing in the game, you may have to settle for fan-produced efforts.

If you’re waiting for FFG to do that for you, then you may be waiting a very long time.

It’s called “a license”. They have the license from Disney to produce materials for sale under certain very specific conditions. And there is no kind of “electronic publication” that falls under the license that FFG has. None. Zero. Zip. Nada.

So, they can produce materials for free and release them as PDFs, which they do for some of the add-on adventures that go along with the respective Beginners Boxed Sets. And they can produce gaming accessories, like dice programs for iOS and Android.

But no electronic publications for sale, of any shape, form, or size.

There’s plenty of other threads in the forum about this subject.

Ok, cool thanks. I suppose one could just start filling in the descriptions themselves... ugh.

Or import one of the datapacks available. Like Vegomatic as suggested earlier.

Anyone got a link?

Im reading some scary things about the Vegomatic dataset, posts claiming errors and the like. I thought I might risk it but google cant seem to find it anyway.
