Brand New to the Game! Excited and Just Some Questions.

By Rick IsLitFam, in General Discussion

Hello everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to help a new player! I just picked up the core set and played my first game with a friend. I have some quick questions (I know they are newbie questions, but I appreciate the help).

-If I have 3 military characters attacking, and my opponent can only block one, do I win 2 unopposed?

-Let's say I am playing House Stark, but I also want to play non-loyal Night's Watch, could I play a non-loyal third faction? This would be similar to playing 3 colors in MTG.

-For characters with "Renown," if they win a challenge and receive a power token, does that mean they gain that +1 power?

-If you are defending and you beat your opponent in a challenge (Ex: You used a card to give your character more power, and it now has more than your opponents), is that considered to have "won" the challenge? If so, do you then get the effects of military, intrigue, and political?

Thanks so much everyone! I really appreciate the help and I look forward to playing with anyone in the Pittsburgh, PA., area!

First, welcome aboard! You'll generally find the community sites, such as cardgamedb, are better frequented - the official forums are a big of a ghost town just because they're actually a newer creation (in their current incarnation) than most of the forums that supported the community of the 1st edition, most of which carried over.

  • -If I have 3 military characters attacking, and my opponent can only block one, do I win 2 unopposed?

No. Your opponent doesn't have to block characters, they have to choose whether or not to oppose the challenge. If you attack with 3 characters and he defends with one, he's opposed the challenge (provided he has at least 1 STR). You total up the STR on both sides to determine the winner, but for most effects, the number of characters (if at least 1) doesn't affect anything.

  • -Let's say I am playing House Stark, but I also want to play non-loyal Night's Watch, could I play a non-loyal third faction? This would be similar to playing 3 colors in MTG.

Currently, no. The only way to include two factions in your deck currently is by having a Faction as your 'main faction', and choosing one of the Banner agendas, allowing you to include non-loyal cards from the second "supporting" or "banner" faction. Note that in the future, it's incredibly likely we'll see other ways to mix factions through agendas (e.g. "You may include any number of Small Council characters, regardless of faction" seems to be one people are convinced is coming).

  • -For characters with "Renown," if they win a challenge and receive a power token, does that mean they gain that +1 power?

Going to go out on a limb here and assume you mean "+1 Strength"? The two concepts (STR and Power) don't always translate well... STR is what the character contributes to the challenge. Power is the victory condition. Having a power on a character doesn't (in and of itself) improve the character in any way, but it brings you one power closer to your victory condition. That power is also 'safe' from power claim, since it's not on your faction card (conversley, it's vulnerable to effects that might kill the character it's on).

  • -If you are defending and you beat your opponent in a challenge (Ex: You used a card to give your character more power, and it now has more than your opponents), is that considered to have "won" the challenge? If so, do you then get the effects of military, intrigue, and political

If you have more STR than your opponent on defense, you do win the challenge. A lot of effects that trigger off winning challenge (notably, using keywords like Renown and Pillage) work just as well on defense as they do on offence. However, winning on defence does NOT entitle you to either unopposed power (that's only for winning on offence with 0 str on defense) or to applying claim (mil, int or power claim) - which again, only happens if the attacker wins. Defending is warding off an attack, not a counter-attack of your own!

Thanks for the help, Istaril!

Much appreciated!

Just a follow-up:

-Robb Stark says when a Stark dies or is sacrificed, stand all characters. So, if I initiated a military challenge with Robb and Arya, and Arya was killed or sacrificed, does Robb stand and can I then initiate a political challenge with him, as well?

It would be a Power challenge, but yes. If Robb had a Little Bird, it could be Intrigue too.

Generally speaking, how many challenges a character has participated in is not a factor in whether a character can be declared as an attacker or defender - only whether or not it is standing and has the right icon when it it time to declare your attackers or defenders.

Thanks so much guys!
